Bundle pricing for new 10Mbps tier updated
(old news - 10:10AM Monday Jan 28 2008)
tags: dsl · Video · competition · coverage · business · bandwidth · TVIP · AT&T U-Verse
AT&T today announced they're launching their U-Verse VDSL & IPTV service in Northeastern Illinois; specifically in parts of more than 175 local communities, including Bellwood, Buffalo Grove, Crystal Lake, Dolton, Elmhurst, Harvey, Hoffman Estates, Melrose Park, Oak Lawn, Orland Park, River Grove, St. Charles, Waukegan and others (our users have posted a complete city list here). St, Charles, you might recall, was one of three communities that battled AT&T for the right to build their own fiber network.

Additional detail on DVR rentals, their channel lineup and AT&T's qualification tool are available at the U-Verse website. As always, your questions about the service can be answered by the helpful folks in our U-Verse forum. We're noticing that AT&T has changed their pricing somewhat with the upcoming launch of a faster 10Mbps tier (named "Max") that should be officially available this Friday:

If you can get it at all you'll be able to get "full speed" on the broadband Internet part.

Re: Uverse Max

The availability checker is up and running, but they are just starting to light up the Chicagoland area so the "yes" responses are quite limited at the moment. None of my numbers qualify yet, but I knew that already since the equipment I've seen around here is not operational yet.

I don't see Harvey getting this at all. Most of the southern suburbs of Chicago are old and have very old telephone copper. Which means high signal-to-noise ratios. I lived in Harvey and it was a nightmare to get idsl let alone some super speed trick vdsl. Until At&t solves the distance problem this is not going to take off at all and Comcast will maintain its death grip on Chicago and surrounding areas

The "distance problem" is "solved" by placing the equipment within 5000 feet of the customers. That's the whole point of it. The age of your copper is not the issue...although the maintenance (or lack thereof) certainly plays a role over time. I would guess that most of Harvey is newer than most of La Grange.

The name game....

Gah, damn marketing department. Possibly the least descriptive, most confusing naming scheme ever. Pro, elite, max, express? How are you supposed to differentiate between which is which?

And I can see how U100 = 100 channels, but from there, the U-Verse math team fails.

Needs more X's in the name I guess.

Expensive.

They just launched Uverse here in St. Louis too. I looked into it. It was about ten bucks more than my cable TV and internet not to mention that the internet speed was slower on Uverse. I was really looking forward to this but its just more of the same... Had it been cheaper Charter would have been given the boot but sadly its not the case.

Re: Expensive.

Really? Around here Charter just lowered their prices but up till then their lowest speed tier cost as much as BellSouth's fastest. And their cost for basic TV wasn't exactly cheap either. Now their prices are closer to AT&Ts in this area.

I agree that its expensive:

I have what's roughly equivalent to U300/Pro
Uverse = 109

I pay: $61.97 (including tax/fees) for DTV + $24.95 for DSL ($26.88 including tax/fees)
Total = 86.92 AFTER taxes

Ok - to be 'fair', I'll add in POTS/Uverse VoIP

Uverse = 139 for Pro + Voice + U300 (not including tax/fees)
My total = 61.97+24.95+$57 (all include tax/fees) = 143.92

The bundle _should_ take care of the fees/taxes

Also, there appears to be a discrepency between the pricing posted with the 10/1.5 and existing pricing

From uverse.att.com
The image posted above has higher prices for all the bundled tiers.

Its U-niVersel!

Ah, I see U-verse is finally available(website says my town is Live). Still think since my address is plastered all over our box should get discounted service. Can you copyright an address yet?

While its nice to see another 'choice' looks like U-Verse still leaves a lot to be desired. Still have just under a year left with AT&T/DISH bundled discount deal to go, so probably just as well give time for them to work out all those kinks.

Huh?

U-Verse Line···cago.pdf
Chicago Area U-Verse Package Lineup
"Monthly $10 HD Technology Fee applies."

$10 just to have HD eh? Couldn't name it "HD Cost Recovery Fee"?

Come on ditch the f'ing fees already!

" I have an HD enabled TV, I want to purchase HD content $10/month
Each U-verse TV requires a receiver. How many receivers do you need? You get one TV receiver with a DVR and two additional receivers for no additional charge. You can get a fourth, fifth and sixth receiver for $5 each per month."

So 1 HD-TV in your house costs you $10 extra. Pfft.

Edit: To add total of 42 HD channels available, including locals and info channels.

Edit2: Attach PDF of Line-up for anyone wanting a quick peek.

There is a vrad in Schaumburg not far from barrington and golf. It does not appear to be live though. It has power but all known addresses in the area show not available.

Those that claim AT&T is "cherry picking" are definitely wrong. Nothing in the parts of Schaumburg I checked, Elgin, Algonquin, Lisle, or Naperville.

Re: Not available in Schaumburg???

Something I just thought of...

Schaumburg, Elgin and Naperville are served by WOW! Internet & Cable in addition to Comcast. So I wonder if that has anything to do with it. Maybe because WOW! was originally Americast, from Ameritech (now AT&T), perhaps AT&T is not allowed to offer a competing service for a set period of time and that time limit hasn't yet expired.

It's just a thought, not sure if that is the case though.

Doubt it. There's a VRAD on the corner by my apartment in Naperville, but I can't get service (yet). I also can't get WOW where I live due to an old landlord exclusivity agreement; despite the fact that agreement is no longer enforceable, WOW isn't expanding right now.

I do know that the Naperville city council fought with AT&T back before the statewide franchise was signed, in a similar way that Geneva did but not quite to that extent. I'm inclined to think there's more than a non-compete clause at work here.

Re: Charter and raised prices

Except with Charter you pay ridiculous equipment fees...$10 for HD content is a standard price across all providers (dish and DirecTV you have to have an 18month-2yr contract to get HD)

They really raise the prices, technically they dropped the bundle discounts as of mid feb.

U100 = Good Deal

The U100 package (depending on channels) looks like a good deal.

I pay $59 for Satellite TV and would pay $49.95/month for equivalent internet speeds. So their price point looks great. It's a subpar product to DirecTV and my internet provider, so $99 is a good place to start. I'm sure this is to entice customers while they fix the TV side of things, only to jack the pricing later.

I'm curious why the family package isn't any cheaper?

Also, does all the U talk have any one else thinking of German U-boats?
