Ultra-Mobile-Broadband (UMB) Officially Dead
Qualcomm ceases development, focuses on LTE
by Karl Bode Thursday 13-Nov-2008 tags: business · wireless · bandwidth
Originally, three were supposed to be three front-runners for the fourth-generation wireless broadband crown: 3GPP LTE (Long Term Evolution), mobile WiMax and Qualcomm's 3GPP2 UMB (Ultra Mobile Broadband). All three standards offer low latency and theoretical max speeds that crush EVDO and HSDPA, but with AT&T and Verizon putting their weight behind LTE and Sprint embracing WiMax, UMB's prospects quickly dimmed. Given that analysts were saying UMB was dead a year ago, and no major carrier wanted to deploy the technology, Qualcomm today finally announced they were stopping development of UMB and focusing their resources on LTE.

Lets go

Enough talk already! Start implementing LTE and WiMax. I don't care who wins the crown all I know is one of them is my hope for a faster ISP.

If you move to Baltimore you can already get Mobile WiMax. Its being provided by Sprint/Clearwire, and so far the reviews look promising.

LTE is still vaporware although Mobile WiMax exists (just barely) now.

I wouldnt consider it vaporware. I fully expect it will start being rolled out in roughly 3 years.

Not in the US unless it's T-mobile. ATT said they are in no rush for LTE since they plan to rely on higher speeds of HSPA for quite a few years. Verizon has to do a major overhaul to get LTE out and I suspect they won't rush into it unless WiMAX is showing significant success. There could be a few LTE pilots in the US within 3-4 years though.

It's disconcerting that many think this is like a format war. WiMAX/LTE is not like the blueray/hddvd or betamax/vhs battle. It can compared to cable and dsl. Both co-exist and used by what resources are available to each vendor. WiMAX will be pushed by the IEEE/cable/consumer electronics industry and LTE will be pushed by the telcom industry. Unless you love telcom deathstar industry control, any consumer should really want more open WiMAX to succeed whether LTE is available or not.

Re: Lets go

It looks like there is quite a diverse group in support for WiMAX, including some giant telecom companies in India and China.

Psst.. wimax is already being deployed. LTE.. well, once it will fit through the lab door, I'm sure it will show up, like, say... 2012 or something...

Re: Lets go

WiMax is great if you aren't inside. WiMax is a good tech on paper but has flaws. WiMax is also quite a complicated spec.
