United Airlines has started in flight Wi-Fi service on flights between New York and California, according to the Chicago Tribune. Sort of. United's upgraded just one of thirteen Boeing 757's that will be equipped with Wi-Fi by mid-November. Like Delta American Airlines and Virgin, United is using Aircell's "Gogo" in-flight broadband service. Gogo costs $7.95 for smart phone access on flights of any length, $9.95 for regular access on flights of three hours or less, and $12.95 on flights of more than three hours. The Gogo service involves 92 EVDO cell sites aimed ever upward, designed to provide 2Mbps+ connectivity to each Gogo enabled plane that passes overhead. VoIP is banned, though VPN connectivity works.

Anyway I am thankful that someone can't just fire up skype and flap their gums for the entire flight.

I think it's actually a courtesy thing. None of the flights I've been on in the last three years have had phones available at the seat. Then again, I've flown primarily Frontier, with a little Southwest, American and Continental to places that aren't DIA.

Seriously, you can't even hear inflight movies clearly on their provided headphones. On a phone, it'd be like talking near a busy street with heavy equipment rumbling past.

Texting, twitter, and blackberry email. Now *that* I want.

I wonder if Google Maps on the blackberry will work inflight.

Until/unless they ok regular cell phones, I'd hedge that it's mostly under the same umbrella for blocking adult websites and other content that might irritate/offend nearby passengers.

Inflight WiFi is worth it!

I love the in flight wifi. Used it on American Airlines and was bummed that the next weekend my flight didn't have it. I got so much work done on that flight.

Suprisingly, I was offered it by Delta on my next flight. But, I was so tired I slept instead of working.

and hopefully they adjust some of the pricing. I saw a "special" for an all day pass but that was only once. They need to keep an all day pass on the list for those of us that have connecting flights. 1.5 hour flights are not worth it (only 50 minutes of real use) but when I have another 1.5 hr connecting flight, then it would be.

I used the Delta service my last couple flights. Was great, made flight seem short. It worked on both my Pre and laptop under same account. They have a trial promocode.

 yes, in flight wi-fi is a real timesaver for me. I know it's high for consumers, but it's definitley worth my time to be connected for 2+ hours for business. I just wish they hhad it tied to my laptop card plan (meaning I get 1 or 2 Go-GO uses per month if I subsctibe to an EVDO or HSPA aircard).

Blocking VoIP

How would they actually go about blocking VoIP? Latency can't be the issue because the Internet connection is fed by RF from towers on the ground. Blocking VoIP would run afoul of Net Neutrality, and can be easily bypassed with a VPN. Blocking VPN would have them lose most of their business customers that have expense accounts to pay for the connection.

why isn't texting allowed in flight?

Texting should be allowed in flight. I mean what if your plane gets diverted because of a bad storm. How are you supposed to notify your party on their way to pick you up at the airport?

 The ONLY reason mobile phones are not permitted in flight is the FCC. Think about it one plane 35,000 feet off the ground moving very fast... it causes interference on the ground.

Ignoring the bans I have tried to use various mobile phones in flight and it generally does not work well. Even on turboprop flights it is very hard to get reception and hold a call.

How I like inflight wifi

I have used the in flight wifi on Virgin America. I loved having it and it makes a Boston to LA flight seem so much shorter, if it could only make the seats more comfortable that would be nice.

I got very fast speed and only had it drop out for 5 min the whole flight. I wish Jetblue would get there inflight wifi going as I will miss it on my flight next friday. Its better than having live tv to me.

I Think the prices need some adjusting, but the service works great. AirTran has it on all there planes as well. Coming to 300 Delta planes by the end of 2009.

I'm on a Delta flight out of ATL right now as I type this. Just crossed the TX/NM border at 34000'.

Been connected non-stop since 10k' and haven't dropped once. Made several skype out calls too. Everyone said I sounded the same as with a bluetooth. Best 10.95 I've ever spent.
