Using The PS3 And Xbox 360 For IPTV Sony strikes deal with Korea Telecom... Microsoft has been talking for a while now about using their Xbox 360 game console as an IPTV set-top (see these two videos). Sony too is pursuing the idea. The Korea Times (via Engadget) notes that Sony has struck a deal to use the PS3 as an IPTV set-top for Korea Telecom starting in November. Of course, to use your PS3 or 360 as an IPTV device here in the States, the few folks delivering IPTV in this country would need to strike deals with Sony or Microsoft -- something that may not happen out of fear that such a deal would cannibalize DVR and set-top rental (and even casual game) revenue. There's also the small fact that, at the moment, there's only 1,069,000 IPTV subscribers in all of North America. As much as we'd love to see a combination DVR, IPTV set-top and next-gen console (if for no other reason than to lose one box) it's just not happening here anytime soon.

| | this would be sweet I don't have an advanced gaming console but if someone like Verizon would do this with FIOS (I would like to see the Wii) then I would definitely sign-up to rent.. Would need a way to save shows (on the network) or on a hard drive (maybe external SATA?) | |

1 edit | Xbox 360 on U-verse? AT&T's U-verse already uses Microsoft's IPTV platform, so I see no reason why they should have a problem making a deal with Microsoft to use the 360. I have a feeling the 360 would use the same, or a very similar software version that AT&T is using. The sticker on the back of the STB says Microsoft TV IPTV 1.1 if that means anything...
One video I saw mentioned Microsoft was working with AT&T on using the 360 as a STB, but he didn't specifically say U-verse though...The second video posted above mentions AT&T as a service provider, and I believe this one does too: »www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0GijX9S···&search=
| | | | Re: Xbox 360 on U-verse? google MS and IPTV, MS has a deal struck with ATT. ATT will be one of the providers at the end of the year or when ever they release the update to allow IPTV on the 360. | |
| | | | | Re: Xbox 360 on U-verse? Sweet, then I can't wait! I have two potential STBs that I *hopefully* don't have to pay an additional fee to use with U-verse... | |
| | | | | | Re: Xbox 360 on U-verse? I would never opt in for the 360 on a U-Verse connection.
There's simply not enough bandwidth. Especially since I have 4 HDTV's (3 of which are 1080p compatible)
| | | | | | | Re: Xbox 360 on U-verse? If it is a way to get more STBs without paying an additional fee, I say why not? Sure the 4 stream limit is still there, but I don't see the harm in it... | |

I did some reading it looks like Verizon is thinking or is going to. but i have read some articles that state companies are pulling from this program MS made cuz the program is complex and hard to implement.
I hope Charter adds this, since he owned part of MS with Bill Gates. It would be sweet.

| only problem with 360 IPTV currently nothing in the interface exists to give the experience a dedicated IPG gives for cable. Microsoft would need to add a whole separate blade to do this.
I'd like the option to subscribe to the IPTV provider of my choice. since they would all come across Live, you could cut out the cable or telco. for instance, if I could get all the NBC Universal channels through my Xbox360 that would be pretty sweet. I'd just drop my cable and use the savings to buy more bandwidth.
