VOD original programming: Virtual networks
(old news - 07:28PM Saturday Jun 18 2005)
Following is an expanded version of Shirley Brady's interview with Matt Strauss, Comcast's VP of video on demand programming investments.

Shirley Brady: A lot of the opportunities for start-up digital networks at Comcast these days is on VOD: specifically, on your Select on Demand lineup of virtual VOD categories. Talk about how things have changed at Comcast since you were hired to head up this effort.

Matt Strauss: We are on track to achieve the billion views for video on demand that Brian Roberts spoke about earlier in the year. As each month goes on we continue to show growth in the number of views, and even in the percent of our digital subscriber base that is using this new technology. Roughly 60 to 70% of all digital subs use on demand every month. So when we look at the landscape it's really clear that the future of television is not going to be adding channel 343 to the digital lineup, but it's going to be to migrate more and more programming over to on demand, which really is a superior way to watch programming.

ONDEMAND can not replace a full channel. It will always be an extra feature.

You say that with such certainty. I can see a time when a linear channel is supplanted by a VOD channel. You could have the same content, It would just be spaced out and ready to view as soon as the viewer wants.

Re: wronge direction

Well we just lost 23 premium movie channels here in Rockville, MD. Almost all "west" versions of premium channels were taken away earlier this month. That means I went from 60+ movie channels to about 40 channels for the exact same price. Comcast used the on demand system to cover this loss. They said "Well you still have those channels (east coast version) and can get the missing stuff with on demand" I pointed out that I liked the west coast versions since I work late and thus could get to see 8pm movies at 11Pm. I also mentioned that many programs never make it to on demand. They babbled on but the point was "Tough. Enjoy the 60% price increased for premium movie channels."

So you still pay the same amount? That's really trifling. They need to lower your price immediatly.
