VOIP Gets Competitive
Net2Phone in Space, Cable stays grounded
(old news - 01:04PM Friday May 02 2003)
tags: competition · business
While VOIP provider Net2Phone strikes a deal with Hughes, cable providers take their sweet time bringing telephony offerings to the table. Net2Phone and Hughes this week announced they'd be jointly launching a VOIP service utilizing the Direcway broadband satellite system; a plan which should be migrated to Hughes upcoming Spaceway Ka-Band satellite system. Meanwhile cable companies, many of which have been planning VOIP services for years, may be running out of time as companies like Vonage and FreeWorldDialup (not to mention the telcos and big players like Microsoft) begin to nibble away at the market.

Competition!

No one's against healthy competition! Not to say VOIP is expensive, but let's keep it inexpensive! Still not going to go to DirecWay, but it's still good news.

how is this going to work

With the unavoidable 2+ second delay caused by satellite? Low latency is more important to VoIP quality than pure throughtput, which is the exact opposite of what DirecWay offers.

Re: how is this going to work

I was wondering the same thing. There is not a way that voice traffic could make it on time. It is the same reason why the old over-seas calls where so horrible, because they used satellites. With fiber running to most countries now it is no longer as bad.

DirecWay service has an enormous amount of latency. I guess another thing is a jitter problem where the time for travel of the packet changes often.

Then there is the clouds problem. When a bad storm rolls in there goes your phone. Reliability is something we have all come to expect with our phones, more than our internet connections.

Spaceway is a whole different animal than DirecWay. Operating in globally assigned Ka-band spectrum, SPACEWAY employs high- performance, on-board digital processing, packet switching and spot-beam technology to offer single-hop connectivity, regardless of location.

There is no NOC or terrestrial routing involved. Oh, this is business-class service we're talking about. The DW6040 is going to be really expensive. Since you'll need a DW4020 too, your looking at around $2000* just for hardware.

Re: how is this going to work

I read that too but it doesn't say if they will be high orbit (like now) or low orbit satellites. If they're high orbit single hop may help a little but most of the latency is still unvoidable and caused by the sheer distance the signal has to travel.

It's still going to suck. That's why the sat-phone companies (e.g. Iridium) use LOW EARTH ORBIT, not geosync. Of course, the sat-phone companies went bankrupt in a big way because the market is tiny and getting smaller every day.

Delay is not that bad...

The average delay on satellite for a round trip ping is 700 to 1200 ms ROUND TRIP (at least on Starband), typical is about 800 ms. Each way is about 400 ms typical. That can be worked around for large economic savings. The only problem in the delay for voice is when someone stops and is waiting for the other party to respond, the satellite delay will only ad about a second to this delay.

Re: Delay is not that bad...

I think the problem with delay is different pieces of what you just said getting to the receiving end faster than others. I guess the best way to explain is when the second half of your word gets to the other end and decoded at the exact same time as the first half. Voice really needs to be consistent to sound correct. This can be made worse if there are re-sends due to inconsistent data (errors in the data).

When you are interrupted or in a very active conversation it really does matter. One second may not sound like much but it really is when you actually talk to someone.

Re: Delay is not that bad...

And the other point to Direcway is that the upload speed is slower than dial-up

Back in the 80's, as long distance competition was just getting started, there were satellite circuits competing with existing landline and terrestrial microwave.

The rule of thumb used to be that satellite circuits could be sold to Texans, but never to New Yorkers, solely due to the difference in their speed of speech....
