Video p2p service gets its official name...
(old news - 02:47PM Tuesday Jan 16 2007)
tags: Video · Fileswapping · software
Previously known as "The Venice Project," the p2p video delivery system being developed by Skype creators Janus Friis and Niklas Zennstrom has been given its official name: Joost. While still in beta, the new website offers plenty of screenshots, as well as a new FAQs. As previously mentioned, the system isn't friendly to those on capped ISPs. A warning was sent to beta testers noting that "one hour of viewing is 320MB downloaded and 105 Megabytes uploaded, which means that it will exhaust a 1 Gigabyte cap in 10 hours." Obviously, the popularity of the service will depend on the content deals signed and how well Joost differentiates itself. The rush of dozens of companies toward broadband video will make for an interesting pile up -- if nothing else.

320 MB for an hour...

350 MB for 40 minutes already looks awful on an HDTV or a higher res monitor. I can imagine how this will look.

But since it is P2P based, it will incur the wrath of the cable ISP's in North America. Look for more ISP's throttling P2P apps to protect their networks from being buried in video traffic.

Been using it

I have a 1.7Ghz 512M RAM system on a 3.0M line and the player runs like crap. It's very non-responsive and the video is clear, but only loads a frame every 5 seconds. The sound plays clear. I just got the latest update last night but haven't given it a whirl yet.

Sorry, I have no invites. I signed up on the main page about a month ago and go let in within about two weeks. I'd advise others that want to join to do that same.
Apparently when I was let in the let others in as well and that caused a lot of load on the servers. The services is running much better today.

OSS?

I did a little checking and it looks like Joost started as an OSS project.

I am sure that Stallman will be chiming in, any time now.

Re: OSS?

Stallman will be happy because Joost has several senior members of the Apache Foundation on thier payroll as well as several OSS developers .Who says open source doesnt pay .

The Client is also based on Mozzilla .

The changes that Joost is making to the the open source code they are using will be contributed back to the OOS community .

hype

When they have actual live tv agreements with real broadcasters let me know. Otherwise the content on this is worthless.

The audio seems very good. Theres no content worth watching and the controls are irritating.
