| Awesome job Verizon You're reaping the rewards of what you sewed and invested in. You stepped up to the plate..went for the home run with a full scale FTTH rollout..and you put the ball right over the outfield wall.
AT&T..ARE YOU LISTENING? Are you READING their results?
They are now running TEN times what you are with uverse signups.
You have NOT saved any money with your low budget rollout. You are denying your shareholders AND customers..and yourselves..all the benefits that a full scale FTTH rollout will bring.
1.3 MILLION customers to your what..100,000?
And,it's just the beginning. Now that their REAL potential is beginning to take hold..namely 20/20Mb connections..they're only beginning to flex their muscles.
THAT..is REAL competition for the cable industry.
It is TIME you joined in.

| Re: Awesome job Verizon in my opinion, i'd rather bite the bullet now and get it done (when i comes to money) than wait and possibly pay more for the same thing. i have a feeling att will be hurting more latter as they deploy FTTH, depending how the price of equipment and labor is when inflation is factored in.
so att is slowly doing fttn... i'm wondering if they can upgrade the nodes easily to do ftth, or maybe i should say when. i'm curious to know if this is their intent and if it could be cheaper in the long term using this method.

| Re: Awesome job Verizon I don't normally agree with you Rick, but I too am amazed at ATTs slow progress.
I paid for cable to be run to my house, and I would pay for Verizon to run fiber to my house.
I think AT&T is missing something huge here. When given the option of FTTH, people jump on it. It isn't a question of 'Hmm, should I replace my current services with FIOS', it is more:
"When the hell can you get it to my house?".
I may be an exception, I tasted the forbidden fruit before I moved from Philadelphia to nowheresville, and I was hooked.

| Re: Awesome job Verizon AT&T is not only missing something huge..they've also boarded something huge. Namely the Titanic 2...and it's now headed across the Atlantic on it's maiden voyage.
That..is what Uverse is. And I can't be any more blunt about it.
And, for the better part of what has now been a year and a half..I've been standing on the dock saying..you don't want to get on that ship!
But, not only did they get on that ship..their new CEO even decided to take a helicopter out to board it himself months after it left shore.
It is NOT a question of IF it will hit that iceberg..it's a matter of when.
And everyday that passes by..with every bit of news that continues to roll out..the reports are just coming in that there are more and more and more icebergs ahead. And all they are saying is..go faster..it's full steam ahead.
Meanwhile..what is it we're seeing here at BBR? We're seeing their growth numbers now pale in comparison to Verizons. We're seeing even the die hard uverse fans rumblings of unhappiness in the uverse forum. We're seeing the result of their failed legal, licensing..and political strategy.
And, we're seeing Verizon run down field with the ball....and they're going to score a touchdown.
Why? You simply could not have summed it all up any better. FTTH..is something new..exciting..anticipated..and something that can deliver.
Something that people WANT. Expect..and are demanding more and more.
It really is the cable co. alternative.
I've written before about a fundamental problem that AT&T..and really anyone has..who seeks to move into someone elses VERY established territories. You'd better have something that is REALLY much better than what is out there now..if you hope to make it.
And, this goes the same for the cable industry..trying to take phone customers away from Ma Bell. Ma bell IS the phone company. And has been for decades. You don't unseat that overnight.
But..the cable co's are doing it. At least making some big inroads. And the reason is..triple play.
I don't post anti AT&T comments because I don't like AT&T. I have..and had.nothing against them. What I did see however is what you're now seeing..and feeling. And I saw it a year and a half ago. And that told me..this just was going to be some real rough waters for them.
And why in the world they chose to go this route..instead of getting on the same boat Verizon was boarding..was way beyond me.
AT&T was making one of the worlds biggest blunders..and one that people should know exists in the world of technology. They were building..and rolling out..a 386sx computer..when the world of quad core computing was on the horizon.
If someone looks at and considers verizons numbers..they will see that fios is virtually replacing their lost landline business. And, their growth is leaps and bounds ahead of uverses. This is what people want. This is the future.
This is real competition for the cable industry.
And, that is what I'm all about. NOT..being a cable fanboy..but about competition. For all of us.
World class competition for the years ahead.
And, if AT&T doesn't join that race..and soon...because remember..this will take them YEARS to build and roll out..it's going to be lights out for this company.
The titanic..will sink. -- The Coyote captured the RR! Roadrunner Rick is now Comcastic!

| Neither, AT&T's increased earnings were mainly the result of the BellSouth acquisition. Verizon's decreased earnings were mainly the result of charges taken against current earnings. Verizon does appear to have a longer term business strategy. | |

| Did you actually read those articles? Verizon's revenue is down compared to last year partially because they didn't adjust for spin-offs that have happened in the last year. Those spin-offs are fairly profitable, and are a revenue source that the company had last year but not this year. Add to that the up-front cost of fios.
On the flip-side, AT&T didn't include the cost of the acquisitions that they made. When you adjust for those costs, the profit that AT&T made goes down.
The proof is really in the subscriber base. FiOS is growing at a faster clip than I expected it to at this point. While still not turning a profit, they saw a 40% increase in TV subscribership over last quarter.

AT&T=130k Verizon=717k
What with Verizon having a pretty big head start it's not altogether different as FiOS was around the same mark with their TV gains if you factor in time since launch.

| Not fast enough Neither at&t nor verizon can roll out their services fast enough to seriously compete with the local cable companies for phone ant tv services at this time. These cable companies have been in place for years are have been patiently waiting for both at&t and verizon to come to bat with their tv offerings. Neither company has been in the tv business any longer than 3 years. TV is new to the telcos. When they finally get all the bugs worked out and start to deploy in earnest, then cable might see some competition. We are several years away from that moment (imho).
1.3 million fios customers might be something to celebrate, but what are the total number of subscribers that don't have fios or uverse and want it? Everybody has a telephone (well, almost). Does everybody have cable to the prem? Do the math.
Both at&t and verizon are committing huge investements in their new systems. I wouldn't think either would expect immediate turnaround on profit. Has verizon made a profit yet on fios? We know at&t uverse hasn't and is riding on the coattails of their Cingular (now at&t Mobility) momentum.

| Re: Not fast enough Hehe, do the math-
On DOSCIS 3.0- 480 Mbits/sec= 4.8 Mbits/sec/sub, (based on 100 subs per node)
On FiOS GPON-
2400 Mbits for 32 users= over 70 Mbits/sec/user.
Plus, with EPON and WDM-PON on the way, cable just HAS to upgrade to FTTH. Its simple physics, light over glass HAS to beat RF. It's called the Shannon limits.

| Never thought I would say it.
I always thought of Verizon as the big evil empire (monopoly). I thought I would never do business with Verizon because of my poor dealings with them at work with the old centrex lines ( few years back) and practices of when you want to use a calling card or one of those cheaper 5 digit long distance prefixes to make call Verizon would add a access fee. So I said that was it with Verizon. Then came Fios to my home in Broomall PA and I said WOW fiber to the home WOW. That was a breath of fresh air but then I thought it's still Verizon the company I called "big evil empire (monopoly)" then I heard of so many positive experiences with Fios and tech support I went for it. I dropped Cable internet for Verizon DSL and when Fios came it was an easy transition. I kind of wish that the rest of the company had it together though but for Fios internet they seem to have it together as it should be. Finally we might catch up to Japan and other countries but it may not be to the same price point because its still Verizon "'big evil empire (monopoly)". I really wished that Covad would have beat them to this in same way.
