Verizon Adds Pandora to FiOS TV
CA, TX, VA First, National Deployment Looms
by Karl Bode Wednesday 20-Jul-2011 tags: business · hardware · bandwidth · consumers · Verizon FiOS
"FiOS TV customers with a Motorola HD STB or DVR in California, Texas and Virginia can directly stream Pandora from their STB to the TV," says an e-mail from Verizon to Broadband Reports. "The app is free and we will be rolling it out in additional markets soon," says spokesperson Deidre Mulcahy. Verizon has a blog post explaining how the app works; users simply have to click the Widgets button on your FiOS remote control, choose the Widget Storefront and click on the Pandora icon. Verizon continues to add interesting new set top box functionality in the hopes of eroding cable industry market share. Companies like Comcast are responding with GUI enhancements and additional set-top driven services of their own.

How many places do we need these apps?

They're in our TVs.
They're in our STBs.
They're on our phones.
Our iPads.
Our Droid Pads.
Our browsers...
They're on our MCPC apps ( Boxee, ZeeTv, etc...)

These apps are everywhere!

Yeah, sometimes it seems like these things are tribbles or something. Still... this is one I've been waiting for. I like Pandora, and with my DVR being hooked up to my audio system, it's nice being able to stream music through my sound system without the need for any other types of boxes in the mix. Now if they just get moving on that Netflix ap, I'd be all set.

What a waste of time

Verizon, quit wasting your time on stupid bullshit none of us care about and ADD SOME MORE HD CHANNELS ALREADY! I am getting fed up with the growing number of channels FiOS TV is missing.

We subscribe to FiOS TV for the TV, not some stupid Internet radio application.

Right... no one cares about these Widgets... which is why every provider is falling all over themselves to provide them. I like having them. Yes, I use their radio widget today... and their weather widget.

Besides, this has nothing to do with adding HD channels. Holding off on adding widgets will do nothing to up their bandwidth for HD channels. You'd still have the same number of channels, and fewer widgets.

Re: What a waste of time

This is manpower Verizon is putting into adding useless junk that they should be putting into adding capacity, modifying channel arrangements and agreements, and phasing out older set-top boxes so they can switch to H.264.

My point (the main one, anyway) was that there is clearly a demand for these things - otherwise providers wouldn't be working so hard to put them out there. No... I wouldn't pick a service provider based on widgets, but I do find them useful. You're also assuming that the team responsible for doing widgets is the same team looking to expand bandwidth. Also, I get the sense that these widgets are pretty much plug and play at this point - I don't think adding one is all that big of a deal - I don't think it sucks up a whole lot of resources.

Re: What a waste of time

There's not a demand for bandwidth caps yet providers sure seem to be working hard to put them out there... hmmmmmm...

You say that as if manpower has a strict limited supply and can not expand as needed.

The skill set required to develop the Pandora app is likely to be completely different than negotiating content agreements, managing bandwidth, or physical assets, all of which can continue to be worked on by other employees simultaneously. The manpower to develop the app my guess wasn't even in house, it was likely outsourced to a 3rd party for the bulk of the development. If that indeed is the case, then it would only take money, something Verizon has plenty of.

I think they are just looking for an excuse to raise our rates. They should try selling widgets as an add-on for $4.99/month and see how many of us are interested in them.

I tend to agree with Xizer. I'm not gaining anything special by them adding this widget onto my STB. If anything, it's actually more useless, since I really don't play music off any of my TV's.

I think Verizon and the other providers try to keep up with the times, so they add these gimicky add-ons. It's all just so they can use it to make their case that their better than the other provider.

But what they fail to understand is that they could have 100 widgets, it doesn't make a difference if we're still missing lots of HD.

With commercials?

My wife was playing Pandora on our Vizio today and I heard typical radio-commercials. This is how satellite radio became shit - slowly but surely.
I'll find a different source of music, thanks!

How do you expect for Pandora to ever turn a profit and pay for the music licenses that are forced upon them by studios? You can get Pandora One for $35/YEAR with no ads.

Or i can get all my music free and use the 35 to cover the cost of VPN

Or you can run Pandora through Firefox with AdBlock Plus, no more ads. Also having a modified hosts file blocks the majority of ads on a webpage. Especially the full page wallpaper Pandora is prone to do.

redesign the apps..

I'm not going to load media manager JUST to play the current iheart radio, and not going to do it for pandora either. As it is I can use pandora on pc or tablet w/o Verizon. They really need to eliminate media manager for anything other than streaming media HOSTED on the PC..

You're in luck-- Pandora on FiOS TV does not require the Media Manager.
