Verizon Admits Droid X Has Screen Issues
Though insists it's only a small number of customers
by Karl Bode Wednesday 21-Jul-2010 tags: business · wireless · hardware · trouble · consumers
Tipped by Mister_E See Profile
Some new Droid X owners have been annoyed to discover that their shiny new phone comes with an annoying flaw -- namely the device's OLED screen suffers from flickering and vertical banding (see these two videos). Verizon has acknowledged the flaw, though they say it's only impacting a small number of users (there's a lot of that going around) -- as in one tenth of one percent. Motorola has supposedly identified the problem leading to the flaky displays and needless to say, impacted customers should contact either a Motorola customer support center or Verizon Wireless to get the phone swapped out.

Re: At least....

The difference is that its not a design flaw, but a manufacturing defect.

In other words... the iPhone is working as designed but the DroidX isn't.

Re: At least....

But they are hard to get. Stock is low and back-ordered. Make sure to get to a VZW store or contact Moto and get on a list.

I was told 8/16 for the Droid 2...when I was at VZW store lastnight... woohoo!!!

so the iphone was designed to drop signal and calls when "held the wrong way"

I always thought ATT had a patent on dropping calls!

Re: At least....

I doubt he thought that one through cause he's got it backwards.

The Droid X works as designed but unfortunately do to defective equipment a extremely limited number or users are experiencing an issue. Those that do, are being serviced promptly by both the manufacturer and the carrier, thanks in no small part to the swift action taken by the carrier.

The iPhone has a defective design and a very large portion of users are experiencing issues. Those that don't experience any issue have the benefit of actually finding a strong AT&T signal, something that is more elusive than a man friendly dike. The make matters worse both the carrier and the manufacturer are telling users the problem is user error or not really a problem since all phones have the same issue or a software issue or whatever the current rendition of the blame game they are playing.

Your statement is not true about a large amount of users are having issue with there Iphone. Only 1.7 percent with issues out 3 million plus phone sold. Do the (3,000,000 X .017) = 51,000.

You mean....

Users are not given a "band aid solution" to their problem. they get to swap out the defected on for a new one, as quickly as possible. Nuff said..

After watching the video

Clearly the issue is because the phones are lying on a desk instead of being held. I can't believe Moto didn't catch on to that fact, if they did they wouldn't have to replace anything

Press release in error

What they meant to say is that screen is fine. That all phones do that and it is just the way they are holding the phone. They will be giving those very small amount of folks a screen cover that hides the screen problem in a couple of weeks.

My NAFTA-built Blackberry 9700 has been pure perfection since I got it last March. Probably because the Canadians that built this puppy give a shyt. Unlike those Moto/iPhone's that are "made in China by WallyWorld rejects"

Software Problem

The fix is going to be a software update that turns off the portion of the screen that is flickering or that has bands. The problem is the algorithm that outputs data to the screen.

Ok so my last comment was meant to be sarcastic, but now an article actually claims this could be software related??

From:

"However, Verizon said that it is sending out an over-the-air patch that should prevent this from happening to any other Droid X customers."

I would have thought this was a hardware problem.

Finally

It is nice to see that Verizon is standing behind their product offering unlike AT&T and Apple. It is a new device so you have to expect some possible problems but teh way Apple is handling their problem sure shows that they do not care about their customers and Job's condescending attitude is not helping their case. Apple get off your as* and admit you screwed up ane be more like Verizon.

Breathe of fresh air to see a company actually stand behind its offering instead of skirting the truth like Apple and AT&T.

I love my new Droid X!

flickering screen

HTC strikes again: I bought my first...and last, HTC made `phone in `06.
In Australia and other parts of the non-USA world, it was called a Jas-Jam(?). It suffered the "white screen of death", a particularly common malady as it turns out.

HTC is the only company i would buy my phone from.

Don't have to worry about locked down devices, no efuse, no design flaws. Easy to root and use custom roms.

HTC phones are far superior than competitors.

The fanboi speaketh... Let me guess, you've never used or owned a droid but feel the need to chime in on the issue. You have an Iphone. Well goodie for you. Now head back to lick Steve's boots while Verizon and Motorola correct an issue with speed and to the satisfaction of their customers, unlike a certain other company...

Holy crap, it's been about 3 years since the first iPhone was released and you're on your fourth? Do phones really need to be replaced that often, or do you like flushing money down the toilet?

Maybe its easier to swap them out

When you have them just lying around. (just joking) But it would appear that Verizon is the new love child around here. Just like google was a few years ago. So I will say now what I said then...Each company is out only for themselves. I bet Verizon's spirit of giving is brought on by the fact that 1) Its a chance to get at ATT and if its true 2) not many users are affected. if the needs arises they will do exactly what Jobs did.

OLED?

Since when does the Droid X have an OLED screen?

It has a 4.3 inch FWVGA LCD screen.

The HTC Incredible has a 3.7 AMOLED screen.

Motorola should claim "You're looking at it wrong", wait 3 three weeks, have a press conference, blame all display devices as having problems when looked at and then issue free corrective glasses for everyone that bought the Droid X until September 31st.

@verizon.net

Lol I love the competition

Let me first start off by telling you I am a Verizon employee and I had the opportunity to test the droid x before it was released and I must say it is a very nice phone with great features, I got the chance to compare them side by side before choosing which one I picked and why, my wife got the iPhone 4 first day it was released, I want to thank everybody for picking up the x for I have a lot of stocks in Verizon but after testing both phones side by side the iPhone in my opinion beats out the x. 1st off the camara of the iPhone is just as good if not better then the x yes I know the x has a 8 pixel compared to the 5 of iPhone, FaceTime is awesome, browsing on iPhone is better, the question you should be asking yourself is "would this be a argument if the iPhone was on Verizon network instead of AT&T" and I think everyone would probably agree they would get the iPhone if it was on Verizon network, take this as it is, there are a lot o other reason I like the iPhone better, there are 3 things on the x that I really wish the iPhone had, 1 the screen size, 2 hdmi out and 3 Verizon network other than that the iPhone wins

Maybe....

Maybe if these devices were manufactured in the country they were sold in, these things wouldn't happen.

OLED displays are not ready for the bigtime in my opinion. Traditional LED backlights have a far longer lifespan.
