Network passes 9.3 million homes and businesses

Verizon says that as of the end of December 2007, they've passed 9.3 million homes and businesses in parts of 17 states with their FiOS FTTH service. In a post to their policy blog, the company says they hope to pass three million more homes a year until they reach 18 million homes by 2010, or over half the homes the company serves. At the moment there's roughly 1.5 million FiOS customers, with about a million of them signed up for FiOSTV. The company hopes to have 6-7 million FiOS customers by the end of 2010.

Not going to happen

Too optimistic. Not going to happen by 2010.

Ok....

"Verizon Aims For 6-7 Million FiOS Users By 2010", then "they've passed 9.3 million homes and businesses in parts of 17 states with their FiOS FTTH service".

Looks like they already met their goal unless the article meant to say new users.

Not fuzzy math, fuzzy misquoting of the article.

3 million premises annually through 2010,
3 million per year times 3 years = 9 million plus 9.3 million = 18 million.

By passed they mean it is available to 9.3 million homes or businesses. That is a 17% penetration rate. They need to do a whole lot better that that.

Yes they do. That is why you see companies use flat numbers instead of percentages in cases like this. 9 million looks a lot better than 17% .

»Re: haha they have 33 million landline homes and businesses, 9 million passed. 1/(33/9)*100 is 28%. So 28% of Verizon landline customers have FIOS. Its more than a quarter.

If they promise 18 million by 2010, thats 55% of Verizon landline will have fios. (1/(33/18))*100=54.5454545 That is over half.

"passed" generally refers to homes able to get the service, not homes that subscribe....

Title is misleading

Stating that Vz hope to have 6-7 million FIOS users by 2010 leaves one with the impression that they expect to have them Jan 1 2010. The article states that they expect that many by year end 2010 or by 2011.

Based on what I see....

They need more boots on the ground for installs as well as material and hardware.

If I was them, I would have moved a TON of my copper guys over to fiber to keep up with demand and open more areas. In my town, half has fiber, where I reside, I am stuck with copper.

With a 16% take rate for internet and a 11% take rate for TV, it looks like Verizon is managing demand just fine.

Impressive numbers

Verizon seems to be doing quite well, limited only by their physical capacity to install, and provide equipment. You can see in the TV thread that some of their numbers may be impacted by lack of HD DVR boxes due to high demand.

So, all in all, Verizon can easily make that number as long as they can maintain or increase the number of crew available to install. At this point, it looks like they are installing at max capacity.

They need a more compelling product

With all the price increases, limited HD channels and endless price increases, deployment alone isn't going to win customers.

I can get FiOS at one of my homes but for the hardware, HSI and programming I get, VZ is far more expensive than Time Warner.

So I'm one of those passed homes, but I'm not subscribing unless they give me a good reason to.

Wait until TWC/RR implements their new caps and pricing models nationwide.

Verizon will hit that goal as long as they don't do something stupid like take up the same business model.

TWC was already expensive. At least with Fios, you get the much better speeds with the internet.

Re: They need a more compelling product

I don't. I get 15/2 from TWC cheaper than Verizon and I don't have to use Verizon's crap router (or pull CAT5 to avoid it).

FiOS is overrated. FiOS is okay if all you can get is dial up or slow cable/DSL. But it certainly isn't the end-all-be-all savior of all things data. It's expensive and they're raising prices right and left on both video and data.

FIOS is really good

I know it is not trendy in these parts, but I have to say that I enjoy my FIOS quite a bit. Not the slightest slowdown, and a pretty good price. It is a winner for me. And they might well be able to get these numbers, if only by word of mouth.

Screw Verizon

I hope it doesn't happen. They started FIOS in New Hampshire and now they are selling it to crappy Fairpoint. I have FIOS internet and phone. Verizon promised me TV soon, now with Fairpig, I will never see video. Verizon can go to hell.

Ok ill take a step back. I have either at&t available for dsl and time warner for cable internet. With the horrible service of tw in my area i looked toward att even though i dont care of the company. Now for dsl i have to go with att or a reseller selling the att dsl. now generally the reseller is not going to be as cost effective and i dont see them selling fios or uverse speeds.

Now somebody give AT&T a kick in ass because it will be 2050 before we see fiber speeds.

If it were 10/10 and $25mo then it would be decent but it's 10/1.5 and expensive. Also AT&T uses sync speed so maybe you get 8 or 9 megabits and then distance from the CO also affects your speed.

My friend has 30/5 which cost him $80 but it's shared by 4 people so $20 each is cost effective.

Re: Good for them!!!

AT&T offers it on U-Verse...you get 10Mb/s it's not synched at that rate.

And distance affects sync rate. After that you're golden.

U-verse is $99/mo for the cheapest deal with 10/1.5, the HD quality is really bad. DSL is just not made for HD I'd rather have Satellite.

what's the cheapest TV/10Mbps FiOS package? DSL isn't the problem with IPTV. IPTV is the problem with IPTV.

not in Massachusetts

VErizon is now refusing to do any further FIOS rollouts in the state until they get a statewise video franchise which would allow them to opt out of local public access channels.

They seem to be lighting up more towns actually, just at a frustratingly slow rate and not in the towns that need and/or desire it most. They are going for the big hits with high population density. The places that its needed and wanted most are where the population is thinner (think west of 495, and also locations south of the pike. Some limited rollouts have happened in these areas, but nothing like the north shore.

Very Impressive....

9.3 million homes passed already with a subscriber rate of 1.5 million customers.

Now these are the kinds of numbers one would expect from a next generation service that is truly a competitive force versus the cable industry and this company is really rolling this service out at a breakneck pace.

Is is absolutely astounding to compare these results with that TOTAL DISASTER of a TELCO..AT&T's #'s for their next generation pewverse service isn't it.

That companies CEO should be ashamed..embarrassed..and flat out ran out of his office for allowing that disaster of a service to continue. I have said from the start that that company would save NOTHING in the end because it was going to do NOTHING to bring on subscribers the way a REAL fiber rollout would.

Consider the numbers folks. Pewverse's numbers at just over 200,000 customers after ALL this time..and a rollout in their own corporate backyard on top of it...

versus THESE kinds of numbers from a company that obviously stood up to their shareholders and said this is what we MUST do to survive.

AT&T's shareholders should DEMAND that the fiasco known as uverse come to an immediate end. It is the laughing stock of the technology world...and their results will drive that company and it's shareholders into bankruptcy.

It is truly hard to imagine that this companies employees are even standing by and allowing this disaster to continue anymore. Faithful as they are..they have posted on here continually trying to defend this outrageous decision by management..but today they are seeing what a huge mistake it has been. AT&T is jeopardizing their futures with a mistake that can only be called one of the biggest blunders corporate america has ever seen.

The writing is on the wall and their management simply refuses to read it. What a disgrace.

Their decision to continue rolling out pewverse is akin to intel deciding that the world needs 386sx computers again.
Meanwhile, Verizon is rolling out this service at a pace like this and is leaving AT&T in the dust.

Will AT&T ever learn...before it's too late?

This is a years long process and they're going down a road they might never recover from.

What a shame for a company that really should know better.

VERIZON..Kudos to you on your product..and your success with it. It's well deserved.

AT&T...you're heading to Bankruptcy court.

It's really that simple.

verizon FIOS

I don't know how they are going to handle 9 million customers. It took them 3 weeks to reinstate my service, and it is taking them two weeks to put me on a faster plan. Mind you, every day of those weeks, I would call and I would get the "you should be up in 24 hours" bullshit.
