Verizon Announces FiOS Media Server
Up to a Terabyte of Video Storage for the Home
Confirming rumors we explored back in September, Verizon has announced a lineup of new FiOS media servers created by Motorola. According to the company press release, the Motorola Medios+ VMS1100 media server can connect up to five Medios+ IPC1100 IP-based set-tops in a home, allowing FiOS users to record up to six shows at once on its terabyte hard drive, then view them on any of the connected set tops -- or tablets, Xbox 360s or other devices in the home. The device is expected to be available in early 2013. The video below offers interested users more detail:

Really ?

1 Terabyte ? That is it ? What is this 2010 ?

My Tive has a 3 TB Drive plus a 1 TB Extender at this point. Good HD Quality is almost 6 gigs for 30 minutes on my Tivo.

They really need to up the storage.

Re: Really ?

Yea 1TB is a joke on this thing, I have 8TB in my media center PC with 6 tuners and even that is not enough at times, I do not know what they were thinking with that little space. I also find it funny that I cant find any information on the Medios+ IPC1100 STB anywhere online, It really has me wondering what they are hiding.

I agree. When you get a 1TB drive, it isn't really 1TB for use. They need to up the storage to compete or allow external HDs to add on.

Re: Really ?

The VMS has an eSATA port, just like all the recent DVR's.

Honestly, I don't even need more than my existing DVR has, I would be excited to be able to record 5 shows and pause tv in rooms without a dvr.

Wonder how the pricing will be, most dvr's have eSata ports so I imagine for people who really need more than 1 tb they'll have the option.

Remember the point of a dvr really isn't to keep everything forever, it's more of a watch and then delete device.

Pretty nice feature

I like how you can pause tv in any room, with our current FIOS multi room DVR you can only pause the TV in the room that has the DVR.

Yeah, had that feature with U-verse and it was really great. I will be very glad to have that feature once again.

1TB is fine...

presuming you actually want to watch what you've recorded within a reasonable amount of time (and then mark it for deletion as opposed to trying to maintain an archive of everything you've ever recorded/watched--but who does that...).

Cost?

You can be sure Verizon will charge a LOT for the boxes and put all kinds of restrictions on them.

Good competition for Dish and Directv...

Most of the comments have been negative but I think its great that Verizon will have a media server to compete against the Dish Hopper and Directv Genie. Probably will be awhile till current users can get our hands on them (my guess like Dish and Directv both target new users for theirs) but at least we will be able to record upto 6 shows down the road.

Direct tv wants $300 up front to get the new dvr and it will extend your contract . HD 10 more a mo.

80% of our customers

"still consider the TV as their top device for viewing video content..."

LOL - kinda stupid to base your 2013 business plan on an old survey.

It plainly states tablet and other device support, I don't understand what your beef is. That's just a statistic.

Cisco Boxes

I wonder if it will be compatible with Fios homes that have Cisco boxes. If not, will Fios swap out all Cisco boxes for motorola ones?
I also wonder if this new system will count as one STB, or 5.
I know fios has a limit on the STB's you can have in your home.

Not sure how there gonna handle the Cisco issue, as of now, I haven't seen both Motorola and Cisco in the same area...

It will have 5 seperate STB rental fees, one for the main server and one for each IP client. Pricing not available yet...

There is curently no limit on the amount of STBs connected in the home, just a very technical way to install multiple nodes.

The new VMS (Video Media Server) system is designed to co-op with exsisting STBs (non-VMS) and the capability to add additional servers if more than 4 IP clients are needed.

Fios Multi-Room DVR

I dont have an issue with my current Fios multi-room DVR except it is waaaaay too slow on the other boxes.

It takes forever to respond.

With the exception of the main unit, its frustrating to the point of almost being unusable.

Your "other" boxes are most likely less than 7000 series boxes (2500, 6200, or 6216). Try upgrading them to either a 7100, 7100p2, 7216, or a 7232. They all have more memory for the current guide image, and the seem to respond more quickly with navigation.

4TB

Yeah, 4tb would be better.. afterall customers have been thrown nothing but price increases.. as of late..

IMO, 100/100mbit tier would be better for $70 a month than having local cloud storage;; this is the milestone Verizon needs to meet so that cableco's don't have any rest on offering not offering something closer to symmetrical speeds.

Verizon STILL advertises a 15 megabit tier.. even though real world speeds make it higher and charge more for it.. 15 megabit speeds have been around for a DECADE in some cablecos.. 15 megabits upload have been around for nearly that long as well..

They offer up to 300Mbps dwnld now... on a Gigabit Fiber Over Ethernet line to your house.

You need more than that?

It's funny

It's funny to me that everyone always wants more and more features, more speed, more storage but no one wants to for what it took to develop the technology.
