Verizon & Apple Cooking Up A Tablet
Though distribution may not be exclusive...
by Karl Bode Tuesday 21-Jul-2009 tags: business · hardware · wireless
Last Spring rumors bubbled up that Apple and Verizon were working on an "iPhone lite" and some kind of Apple tablet device, given AT&T retains (and may still extend) the exclusive distribution rights to the iPhone. The Street has a little more detail on the tablet, which one source claims "won't be as tightly integrated" as Apple's iPhone exclusivity deal with AT&T, though the device will be subsidized. The source claims the device has been in testing for two years, with a prototype ready for the past year. A new Apple tablet would certainly put some extra marketing shine on Verizon's plan to launch LTE wireless broadband in 30 markets in 2010.

An expensive netbook from Apple?? No way

It isn't a Kindle competitor. And it isn't a phone(will be data only). And it will be twice the cost of any of those $300 netbooks floating around. I'm not sure why Verizon Wireless would want to tie themselves to something like this, and especially subsidize it. What you will get will be an expensive midsize internet device double the size of an iPhone, but not a phone.

But if Apple makes it, there will be 1 million Apple fans who will jump to buy it .

But on the plus side, it will be touchscreen, probably run all the iPhone/iPod Touch apps; and smaller and lighter than a laptop(but probably without all the Windows or Mac apps usually on a laptop). Corporations with deep pockets may pay for some of these for their road warriors.

Well, and the resulting marketing orgy is a fairly good time for Verizon to launch LTE and push the idea that they've shaken off the closed-network shackles of history....

Good job criticizing a device that you have zero facts about.

What's your point? My comment goes for them too.

They are already locking into ATT with their Iphones.

I will admit that Apple fans are so stupid they might buy this just to have it.

Since 92 and up until this year I have had PCs and felt similar these fanboys what do they know; they are whacked.

I got a Mac Mini for my work and never used it til I started doing so in Feb. In March thing asked me to update it(software update). After it did that it would not reboot.

I called Apple and even out of it's warranty they scheduled me for the next day at the nearest Apple store to have it fixed. I took it there and boom they fixed it for free. No PC company I ever dealt with offered that level of svc.

Just saying...

Yeah, all of them are stupid. I think you've fallen victim to logical fallacy of insufficient sample.

android

It would probably help Apple compete with Android, and it might give Verizon an opportunity to be a little less open in some ways.

A match made in heaven, plus there will be competition from Android and the open side of things, so this might turn out well!

Meh..

I Picked up a Mini 9 cheap, did the hackintosh thing and can use my data plan (WWAN) or wifi, all running OS 10.5.7.

Why would I want a tablet? I can see a niche like physicians and insurance companies. But Apple doesn't make anything "rugged" so again, why the hype machine fodder?

Missing the point

I think some people are missing the point. This isn't a Phone and it isn't a Net book. It sounds more like an always connected Internet appliance. A net book with better mobility and convenience shall we say. This is a new category with a surface only scratched by things like the kindle. Done right this will have a big following. and since Apple is involved they tend to do things right. Never been a fan of Apple but my ipod touch is the greatest convenient device i have ever owned. A large version of that with Wireless data access instead of just wifi well thats something worth a look.
