Verizon Begins Charging a Fee Just to Use an Older Router

Several users have written in to note that Verizon has informed them the company will begin charging FiOS customers with an outer router a new "Router Maintenance Charge." An e-mail being sent to many Verizon FiOS customers says that the fee of $2.80 will soon be charged every month -- unless users pay Verizon to get a more recent iteration of its FiOS gateway and router. Since Verizon FiOS often uses a MOCA coax connection and the gateway is needed for Verizon TV, many FiOS users don't have the ability to swap out gear as easily as with other ISPs.

"Our records indicate that you have an older model router that is being discontinued," states the e-mail. "If you do plan to keep using your current router, we will begin billing, on 9.29.16, a monthly Router Maintenance Charge of $2.80 (plus taxes), to ensure we deliver the best support."

And here you were thinking you already pay some of the most expensive broadband prices in developed countries (according to OECD data), with that including the "best support" already.

"You also have the option to upgrade to a certified, pre-owned Fios Advanced Wi-Fi Router," says Verizon's notice. "It's a one-time purchase of $59.99 (plus taxes) with free shipping and handling for a limited time. This is a great opportunity to enhance your Fios experience with faster Wi-Fi speeds."

I reached out to Verizon, who -- as in the e-mail notice -- suggested the fee was necessary to pay for "frequent repairs" on older gear.

"The notice was sent to customers who are using our oldest generation of Fios routers (BHR1 and BHR2 models)," Verizon's Raymond McConville tells me. "Many of these routers have been in use for nearly ten years and have required more frequent repairs, so we’re trying to reduce that maintenance load and expense."

The problem is that older routers may not always be the fastest and most advanced, but may still work perfectly well. As such, charging a fee for a device that a consumer may be perfectly happy with really is just another way to raise rates on an otherwise already expensive service. One way around the new charge? Users may be able to head to our Verizon Direct forum and request a new router, which can -- if you're lucky -- be sometimes be obtained from Verizon for free.

Still, Verizon FiOS customers aren't particularly impressed with Verizon's latest fee.

"I'm floored Verizon is doing this," complains one DSLReports.com regular. "Let me charge you a monthly fee to keep your really old router ... OR you can buy a new one from us -- until we consider it old as well and want to charge you a monthly fee again."

Firmware Updates?

Other than firmware updates, what the heck are they talking about?

"Many of these routers have been in use for nearly ten years and have required more frequent repairs, so we’re trying to reduce that maintenance load and expense."

What repairs? Pushing the reset button? Updating the firmware?

So it's out of warranty? Just replace with latest model when the old one dies at customer expense. Most customers understand limits of a warranty do not extend 10 years!

Verizon Expense? Customer is already paying you, for service.

Here's a better solution

Why not just charge for... the actual repairs? No? Because that wouldn't be an automatic charge for people who probably won't even notice it, and thus wouldn't earn Verizon more profits.

I don't get it

Generally, unless you're dealing with enterprise-grade equipment, you don't fix an older router. It conks out, and you just completely replace it - they're so cheap that it doesn't make sense to repair it.

This is why I left Verizon FiOS and went back to cable

So many small charges and this kind of BS.
You don't want me using an old router, upgrade the customer for free that's what any reasonable company would do.
No instead they punish their most loyal customers who have been with them for a long time, (that's why they have old gear)

Emails for FIOS charity

So instead of setting up a free replacement program, they flat out charge customers for something that is their responsibility? Just another reason not to use their crappy gateways that FIOS depends on like crack. I didn't know FIOS was so hard up for cash.

What a ripoff

I don't know how they are allowed to do this and it be legal. Freaking shame.

Applicable for BYOD?

Some customers purchase the Actiontec on eBay to avoid their rental fee. Does this mean those customers should see the $2.80 as well?

Total BS if so

Propping up profits

Verizon has been facing some competition on the wireless side of the business and, as a result, has had to lower rates and/or increase data allotments.

This money grab is the result of that, i.e., Verizon needs to reclaim the profits lost on the wireless side from a captive customer base *somewhere*.

It looks like that "somewhere" is the FIOS customer base.

But Verizon making its customers pay, over and above the monthly lease rate, for the ability to continue leasing Verizon equipment --- I have to admit, that is a good one. Quite creative.

Really?

Humm very interesting. I got the latest router when I increased my speed. Then I moved to a non Verizon area. "Hey VZ I got boxes for all the cable boxes but not the router what to do" and they said "Keep it, we don't want it back" but they then want to charge people a small fee for the older router? That makes no sense.

Charging for required equipment?

Outright stupid to say the absolute least. If someone has TV service and is required to have Verizon's gateway, it should be included in the monthly cost or, at the very least, a much lower monthly rental fee like every single other provider does.

If I was a customer and had to pay full price for required equipment, I'd certainly stick with something that works until it either dies or gets too slow for my needs. Getting penalized for this is a kick in the balls.

Back in the shop...

"Darn. These newer routers just keep breaking right and left. We've got all these refurbs; what're we gonna do with 'em? Hey! I know--you're gonna love this! ...we'll call it a 'maintenance fee' ...haha, I know, right!?"

Older ONT

I have a nine year old ONT. Will there be a "maintenance fee" on that next? I bought my own Actiontec Rev I. Are they "older" to them? What is the schedule for determining if a part of the network is "older" beside what they tell you when it is too late?

I had to have to have the BBU replaced and they told me that it was a constant source of problems. Is that also on the list for a future fee?

If you are under contract, can they force you to update? This sounds like another fee below the line, which they do all the time.

oh, yeah...that wonderfully good service

that very service where in order to look at what "gateways" are available, I have to log in (so hmmmm....Are you going to charge me more for your hardware than, say, someone in Pittsburgh?). Then when you finally put up a link for your gateway, your Website responds "Service unavailable." Yeah, great service that is, indeed.
