Verizon, Comcast Working on 'Magical' Video Services
Job Description Hints at Still-Looming New Features
by Karl Bode Friday 15-Mar-2013 tags: Video · competition · business · bandwidth · cable · consumers · cellular
When pitching last year's co-marketing arrangement between Verizon and the cable industry, the companies promised that they would offer interesting new cross wireless and cable video services. A new job listing for the Comcast and Verizon's innovation lab promises that they're working on "magical experiences," like letting you resume Xfinity TV shows you were watching on your smartphone. Right now, the partnership simply involves cable companies bundling Verizon Wireless services with a prepaid gift card (the total varies depending on the cable company), while with a wink in return, Verizon quietly jacks up DSL prices and shoves DSL users they don't want to upgrade in the general direction of cable.

Verizon trying to dump POTS too

Besides DSL, Verizon is working overtime to dump their copper POTS lines too. Maintenance requests take forever - the last one I made they said someone could work on it in 8 days. I said I should just go to Comcast and the Verizon reps response was "do what you think is best". Maybe Verizon is sending all copper connected customers to Comcast too.

Re: Verizon trying to dump POTS too

Is is just crazy, think about all those people on Verizon dsl, and what if that's the only good wired broadband in there area, and don't have cable for some reason, thousands will be left without broadband in rural areas who have verizon as there only wired provider

Don't worry, they will have overpriced, low cap LTE coverage I am sure! This is what they tell everyone else. Well use wireless, but notice no one ever admits the low caps make it so it's useless for home broadband...

Let's put some facts behind your statement (albeit not scientific). Do the following Google searches:

youtube slow = 1/2 a BILLION results
youtube slow isp1...ispX

Now compare each ISPs number weighted by number of subscribers.

I think you will find a great cross section of ISPs and variable results per ISP.

Here is another view of similar data

And interesting reading you should do before claiming any ISP is "throttling youtube" »/nsearch?q=you···low&cat=

How much does it cost.....

I wonder how many hundreds of thousands of dollars it costs these companies to pay people to come up with stupid marketing creations like this one mentioned in the story?

You can BET that nonsense costs subscribers dearly each month.

Although it seems that even this kind of BS is worth more than the crap job most of the CEOs at these same companies do.

I say lets OUTSOURCE the executive management and CEO positions for ATT, Verizon, Concast, Chapter, Crime Warner, ect. to India.

After all it will save the companies a fortune.

And don't forget all the boards of directors. Then make the companies employee owned and run! We might get some really good service then.

Best idea yet!

Too bad our government officials are so corrupted by the pay off from lobbyists working for the big corporations it can't happen most places.

I like the idea of employee owned and or publicly owned utilities on the local level.

They could be employee owned (lets assume they are doing useful stuff like running it already) right now.
Employees just need to come up with enough cash to buyout the existing owners, something easier said than done.

letters going outin the next couple of weeks

verizon is going to send out letters to all copper customers in ny where fios is also available stating that if your phone breaks they will not repair it you must go onto the fios network or go to a competitor
the letter will go as far as providing all providers available to the customers with their numbers

Re: letters going outin the next couple of weeks

Don't believe the regulations will allow them to do this as long as they have POTS in addition to DSL service. They are federally mandated to maintain that POTS service until they can bribe the FCC or FTC to allow them not to.

I hope they do that in Maryland soon. Then that will force my GF to dump her slow DSL and get FiOS.

Shore going wireless?

A contractor friend of mine was working down the shore in an area that got banged up by Sandy. He told me Verizon is basically refused to hook his customer back up for wire line service. His customer was told Verizon will be implementing their LTE Home Fusion. All his customer needed was a copper line for the security system and for the local calls. My friend also said there was a Verizon logoed van (wireless sub contractor?) down the street installing an antenna on the side of a house.

I wonder if the NJ shore is getting some kind of "regulatory pass" (could also be an experiment) since all the utilities claimed massive damages/loss from Sandy. If that is the case, gone are the low cost easy access to the Net for those going to the shore for the summer or those who live there year round. In the end, everyone will just pay up to have access to facebook and call the local pizzeria. Or they are just going to use their cell phones anyway. Verizon knows that. The person that does get screwed is the person who lives there year round.

The only thing magic about Verizon and Comcast...

...is how they make the money disappear from your wallet.

Of course Verizon wants their users to be able to stream Xfinity TV shows on their smartphones. With their paultry shared data plans and excessive "overage" charges that should be illegal, they stand to make a "bundle". Meanwhile consumers get stuck with another "bundle" of their own, of the variety that usually gets flushed down a toilet.
