Verizon Completes Enhancement of Florida 3G Network
Florida appears to be the place to be these days
Florida is a market that is getting a lot of attention from a variety of service providers right now. AT&T is in the process of launching U-Verse VDSL and IPTV service there and Comcast has been responding to the launch with offers of 16Mbps "Blast!" service in the same areas beginning to be served by U-Verse. The latest big announcement from Florida comes from Verizon which has completed enhancements to its EVDO Rev A 3G network. In a process that took about two years, Verizon says that it has finally managed to be able to offer the enhanced service to approximately ninety-five percent of the state across 25,000 square miles.

So......?

so...what's the enhancement? Is it that they just upgraded to EVDO Revision A? If so, that's really no big deal....however, if they've optimized their Rev. A service (QoS for gaming, VoIP, just higher priority in general) to keep a lower latency across the board, that's pretty neat.

*Shrug* I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Because there is a demand from customers who can pay those services. Florida has a lot or affluent people and retirees. They also have major universities throughout the state. College professors, college students, etc.

Re: So......?

True but still not enough to get Verizon to push out fios to parts of florida that dont have it and in some areas\cases that need it.

I wish Verizon roll out FiOS in the AT&T territory on Florida because it will increase competitions.

Not my neighborhood yet. But there's graffiti er I mean surveyor markings all over the place so I guess U-Verse is imminent.

WTF kind of gaming can you do with EVDO? You only get 5 GB a month. I'm pretty most people in Florida have access to other forms of broadband than EDVO. I wouldn't use EVDO for gaming when they charge $256 per GB overage.

Gaming itself isn't too bad on data rates... but upgrades would be a killer.

I wouldn't say "most". There are a lot of area's near me which cannot get cable or DSL or Cellular Signal's. I would say that only about 35% of florida can actually get broadband via wired or wireless.

I have lived in Florida for the past 22 years. There is no/little broadband in:

Milton, FL
Pace, FL
Defuniak Springs, FL
Ponce De Leon, FL
Westville, FL

and those are cities just around me... that's just within a 100 mile radius.

Odd that you mention Milton. I have 2 different friends who live there and only have DSL (from AT&T né Bell South) and get their TV via a Dish Network or Direct TV bundle with their Bell South Phone Connection. Cox Cable (which covers that region) will not offer Cable in her area (although I think they do in your Town of Pensacola).

Mediacom does some of Milton. My girlfriend lives in Milton and they cannot get DSL or Cable where they live. In fact, you can't even use the land line when it rains because there is a lot of static on the lines. Plus there is no cellular signal where they live. The only providers that barely work at the house is Alltel and Sprint and even then it's hit or miss.

I agree, I'd say at least 95% if not close to 100% of Clearwater has a broadband option. Heck, I have a choice of cable companies too; I can get cable from Brighthouse or Knology.

Tampa Bay is very modern in most areas.

okay so what does this really mean...

Hasn't sprint been Rev. A for a while... Also, if Verizon is moving to LTE in a couple of years, why are they investing on their "legacy" infrastructure. What do I know... this telcos can't make up their freaken mind.

Re: okay so what does this really mean...

This is such a dumb argument... LTE won't exist until 2010 in Verizon's roadmap (i.e., if everything goes correctly), so it doesn't make sense to just give up until then... Also, with cellular devices, one network can fall back on another, so LTE devices (or at least those sold by VZW) will go back down to EV-DO networks in places where LTE hasn't be deployed, so it makes sense to have a good EV-DO network in place even then.

Re: okay so what does this really mean...

so what you're really trying to say is that they're going to have a multi protocol device which will fall back to EVDO, or even 1x mmmkay.

well 2010 is less than 18 months away... let's wait and see.
