Verizon Cooking Up 3G Femtocell
Hopefully it won't be as awful as the last one
by Karl Bode Monday 30-Aug-2010 tags: wireless · hardware · alternatives
We recently noted that Sprint is now giving subscribers new 3G-capable Airave femotocell devices, which allow users with poor cell coverage indoors to route calls over their home broadband connection. We've confirmed with Sprint that they are giving these units away to customers who call in to complain about coverage. Indications are that Verizon is busy working on their own upgraded femtocell unit with EVDO functionality. Verizon's first $250 femtocell was a fairly unimpressive offering, which ate user voice minutes (despite using the user's broadband connection) and suffered from the inability to prohibit other nearby wireless users from consumer the user's bandwidth. Sprint seems to understand that these devices need to offer the consumer value, while Verizon (and AT&T) appear to still be struggling with the concept.

Since so many phones have WiFi

Why can't they build a phone that can route voice calls through IP and the WiFi connection?

Yes but they narked the option to have UMA unlimited calling for 9.95 a month. Now all the UMA does is use your wifi for calls and it uses minutes.

Yes - I know this for a fact. No, I am not wrong. Yes there was an old plan that used to allow. O, you are lucky if you are on that but I have never met anyone on the 9.95 additional unlimited UMA plan.

And willingly admit that voice conversations are nothing more than data? Seriously though, with the questionable quality of a lot of open WAPs out there, I doubt that any serious telecom is willing to take that chance. Besides, femtocells are useful for any mobile phone, not just for the relatively small number of WiFi-equipped smartphones.

Of course not!
Especially if things like SMS at jsut about all other data can be had by a WiFi hotspot... Gee those portable WiFi hotspots could put the whole voice/txt/data business upside down.
Personally, I wish UMA was available on PDA devices in general that supported WiFi - specifically for international roaming. For now, I'll use Skype over WiFi when I'm overseas / in Canada.

we've been waiting for this to hit android forever, but there is both a software and hardware requirement to put UMA on android and little to no headway has been made in developing it

Sprint..

My new Sprint one should be here this week. I have had the original Sprint 2G version since it launched several years ago and it is wonderful, but I have longed for 3G.

Re: Sprint..

I called Sprint and talked to a customer service rep (mentioning that I wanted to improve my in-house 3G service with their femtocell). She did not know what I was talking about but after much description, she asked if I was talking about the Airave? She then gave me the number of the Airave department. When I called them, I was told that I would have to pay $99 for the 3G Airave and $4.95 per month for the service. So I deferred (since I can use wifi at home anyway).

If it's on Verizon

I wonder what the additional up-charge will be? $20 per month? And you have to supply your own internet connection (of course).

And it will be considered non-free roaming.

I love the old Femtocell

I just got the old Femtocell. Without it I have NO coverage within 3 miles of my house but with it I have five bars everywhere in my house and a useable signal up to about 100 feet from the box. I don't care about not having 3G on it at home because I use WIFI for that.

Yeah it uses your minutes like a regular cell call but everyone I call is on my circle which carried over from the Alltel days, so its great all around for me.

Lets see if they stop using minutes

When I inquired about this in the store the guy told me I have to buy the device and it uses my minutes. He tried to cram the thing down my throat and finally I asked him if I should just deduct the $45 dollars I pay each month for my internet from their bill or do I send them a seperate invoice. He shut his mouth very quickly after that.
