Just blocking a few Asian IP's, says rep
(old news - 11:03AM Sunday Feb 27 2005)
tags: spam
According to a Verizon rep in this Associated Press article, the company denies significant numbers of legit customers are getting caught in their spam filters, which they claim are only "limited to a few in Asia that were sending nothing but spam". Why then did thousands of customers (some of whom have joined a class action suit) suddenly start complaining of false-positives late last year? See Inquirer, Register, TechNewsWorld reports; also see our Verizon forum discussion. Speaking to Wired News last month, one Verizon rep suggested "If it's really important you might want to make a phone call."

Is incompetence a strong possibility

Incompetence might be a strong possibility. Maybe Verizon has some network engineers that don't know what they are doing and have inadvertently blocked entire ranges of addresses in the routers that connect their email servers to the world. I don't disbelieve what Verizon is claiming about intentional blocking. They may just be covering up for gross incompetence.

LOL! For him, it's arrogant incompetence...

Do you know if he's still there, though?

The man is a COMPLETE LIAR

This rep is a BLATANT LIAR and caught in that lie.
If I try from a hosted machine I manage in Level3's London data center this is what happens

[sysop@bart]# telnet relay.verizon.net 25
Trying 206.46.232.11...
telnet: connect to address 206.46.232.11: Connection timed out
[sysop@bart]#

If I do the SAME THING from an identically configured machine in Level3's NYC data center...

[sysop@homer]# telnet relay.verizon.net 25
Trying 206.46.232.11...
Connected to relay.verizon.net.

Use Your Telephone & Forget the Emails

From Wired News:

Verizon media relations manager Ells Edwards said he did not know when Verizon would discontinue its blocking of the European e-mail. "Normally these things abate in a matter of days," Edwards said.

Verizon has more than 3 million DSL customers, according to Edwards.

Edwards suggested that Verizon customers who are waiting for an e-mail response from Europe should use alternative forms of communication. "If it's really important you might want to make a phone call," he said.

That's really funny!:D Verizon is telling folks to use the phone. Gosh, I wonder why?

They're blocking DSLR email too

I tried to send an email from my DSLR (i.e. this site) account to my Verizon one and a few days later the message bounced with a timeout error. So it looks like Verizon is blocking DSLR too. Soon the only thing they won't block is other Verizon users.

To put them right...

...I think that the rest of the world should deny mail from Verizon for a while. See how they like that.

Why is this a big deal?

Just dump Verizon and switch to someone else. You would think with they way they don't provide DSL service to most of their customers as it is they would not be giving even more dis-incentives to use their service. Dump them. Find a provider which doesn't do email blocking and be done with it.

They are Idiots

Verizon reps keep calling me about local internet service. I explained not only did I not want them but to stop calling me. The idiot on the phone has told me that thier web excelorator(?) would be faster than the fiber optic connection I have now.

When I asked to speak to a supervisor I am left on hold indefinitly.

I currently use Vib.tv for a connection of 100mbps ul/dl with no ratio. My only complaint is that I can not have a static IP.

Peace

Why is this STILL news?

»More on Verizon Blockade

Have a quick read of my comment from that news posting:

said by sherman10594:
Let's be realistic here - Verizon is trying to cut down on spam like everyone else. They don't give a flying fụck if your emails are received or not.

AND

If I see one more complaint about business email being lost, I'M GOING TO FỤCKING KILL WHOEVER USES VERIZON EMAIL FOR THEIR BUSINESS. Domains are cheap, and POP3 accounts are even cheaper.

Plus, @verizon looks tacky and shows your business has no comprehension of current communications standards. At that point, your email might as well be from @aol.com...

Re: Why is this STILL news?

You have it ass backwards. The problem is with CUSTOMERS who BUY stuff from us, using a VZ account. It means, thanks to VZ stupidity, if the confirmation email comes from a foreign server they don't get it. So they cancel the order. You may not see it this way, but it acts as an illegal block on trade, and who VZ customers can do business with.

Re: Why is this STILL news?

You make a good point - I never thought of it like that. I was referring to businesses that rely on Verizon for their own email communications. Several of the articles mentioned quoted business users as having problems.

This problem isn't unique to Verizon though. I used to work for an ISP that dropped all Amazon.com email because they failed to respond to our spam complaints...

It is unfortunate that people are having this problem but, as always, there's no accountability with the larger corporations. Just look at all of the Verizon lobbying activity on muni broadband laws in states like PA.

I have to agree with both of your 'self' quotes, especially the second quote.

One part of this puzzle that I would bet most people do not know about is that if your domain sends email to Verizon they instantly do two checks against you. One they test your email server automatically to see if it is an open relay. And two while your server is trying to deliver the email they are hitting your server to double check that the 'from' address is valid.

They have a ton of BS rules on their servers if you send them email. I am almost to the point where I sys admin of blocking my users from sending to Verizon, so we are not subject to their abusive practices.

I'm sorry, but you are giving the assclowns at Verizon far too much credit. The rules are simple -

Firewall rule on Port 25 - Incoming IP - "foreign" - FcuK off, US - OK.

No offense, you are underestimating the depths of their stupidity. What I described they have been doing for a couple of years, to everyone. Seperate issue from their mass block of europe. Was just another example of the craziness there.
