Verizon Doubts You Need 1 Gbps Over Fiber

Responding to Google Fiber's offer of symmetrical 1 Gbps lines for $70, add Verizon to the list of companies who don't think you need that speed (or, more importantly, that price) right now. Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam didn't mention FiOS's frozen expansion, but he did suggest that the 300 and 500 Mbps currently offered by the telco was enough until something comes along that can really demand that kind of connectivity.

Verizon, who once called 100 Mbps a "marketing gimmick" argues they'll offer 1 Gbps when they feel they need to:
quote:
"What I'm hopeful of is that [Page will] come up with some applications that really show the need for fiber," McAdam said. "We see great uptake of our broadband now, we're seeing 300 and 500 speeds [in Mbps], we can go up to a gigabit easily if we needed to. The question is, 'is the consumer demand there'? I'm very happy they're making those investments because it helps us prove the overall case for fiber."
Granted the ISP discourse about how you don't need faster speeds intentionally ignores the fact that you might just want lower prices for the speeds you currently can get. Verizon has slowly bumped the price of their FiOS tiers consistently over the last few years, and they'd rather you not mention their 500 Mbps down, 100 Mbps up top tier offers half (a tenth on upstream) of what Google Fiber provides for $230 more a month.
