| | The review referenced doesn't state this is the best phone It just states its the best phone available on Verizon. In their head-to-head test with the EVO, the EVO came out on top. | |
|
| | | Re: The review referenced doesn't state this is the best phone They both have their pluses and minuses. Droid X has better battery life and faster graphics. EVO has 4G, front facing cam and is a bit smaller. EVO battery life is probably comparable if 4G radio turned off.
I'm pretty satisfied with my EVO. Faster graphics would be nice but it's not like it's slow. I like that the EVO screen takes up most of the real estate of the phone. Am surprised to see new smartphones come out with a giant border around it, even new iPhone. Droid X is definitely larger yet has same screen size.
DroidX is definitely a top tier phone but the 'best' comes down to what you would use more, such as 4G or faster graphics. I'm able to fix EVO battery with larger battery. Can't add 4G or front cam to X.

I can't compare to the EVO beyond specs, but so far I'm happy. Sprint's 4G is more marketing than anything right now IMO, and while I would've like to have seen a front facing camera in the DX, it's not a huge loss. To each their own. I'm still familiarizing myself, but so far, so good.

| | | | | Re: The review referenced doesn't state this is the best phone said by openbox9: Sprint's 4G is more marketing than anything right now IMO, I don't think it's just 'marketing' as i can get up to 7-8Mbps on my phone. But does a phone really need that much? Coverage isn't where it needs to be yet but is nice to have when tethering on the road where you can get it, really nice.
4G is currently mostly for data cards, tethering and alternative to cable modem at this time until more phone apps develop with 4G in mind. Not sure it's a big need for phones right now unless doing HQ video, which I don't do much of other than to show off.
There is one big plus for CDMA doing 4G... since 4G is a separate radio, you can talk and do data at same time. VZW is only player who can't do that now.

|
| | | | | 1 edit | Re: The review referenced doesn't state this is the best phone Yeah agree 'for most' but that's like saying ATT 3G is just marketing for non ATT 3G areas. Or VZ FIOS is just marketing since not all major markets have it.
I get WiMAX home, work and in between very solidly so it's not marketing for me. See your point though.

I am finally putting my Slingbox to good use as I have been streaming the Tour de France, and now the British Open, in the mornings; while streaming Rhapsody or Slacker radio in the afternoons.
At this rate, I'm probably going to be directly responsible for Sprint imposing caps.

I have had the same Sony-Ericsson Walkman W810i for over 3 years. I love the thing and will still keep it, debrand it and keep it with a go-phone sim. | Bricking When Modded Wow, this is very disappointing to hear. Considering the Motorola Droid is one of the most moddable Android phones there is. I have mine running a custom Froyo 2.2 ROM (BB .4) with a 1.2GHz ULV kernel, it runs super fast. Having accessibility like this is what made me want to get the Droid. I'm kind of shocked that Motorola would pull a 180 like this with the Droid X. I guess time will tell.

| bricking = wrong I can't believe they brick your phone if a modded fw is detected.
That should surely be illegal to do, esp. in regards to emergency services...
I keep waiting to hear about a really good droid (or smartphone of ANY kind). So far, all the latest smartphones just seem to lack something. Either the carrier sucks, the battery life sucks, the antenna sucks, or something else just ruins the deal.
Maybe by the time the iPhone 5 is out on a CDMA network I'll be impressed.
Until then, it just makes me sad to hear of yet another instance where something could be awesome, but due to the politics of some group of douchebags, it is clearly not as much as it could be.

| | Interesting Comment I saw this posted on the site linked to about bricking your phone
"It is going to be a funny funny day the day the eFuse database goes offline or experiences a glitch, and every DroidX has to go back to Verizon.
And it WILL happen
"
eFuse is what bricks the phone...and if it is a database function, can you imagine how many people will try to hack it in retribution for locking down the phone

2 edits | Was going to get it but it was pretty awkward I thought this phone was supposed to SHIP with 2.2 but the store said it would be a free update next month. Being an AT&T sub, I've heard that sort of story before and a month was more like a quarter or a year if ever.
And there is some overlay software that isn't Android. I'm not a current *droid user so I don't know what it was but not all the Android handsets they had were running it. It appeared to be a GUI for embedded software running ON android, why I dunno. I figured that you could customize it to remove all the bloatware but now it seems that modding the phone may brick it. The phone in just going through the menus seemed sluggish. I was disappointed. I guess it is back to doing more research to pick a different handset.
Looks-wise the big screen was nice but the rest of it reminded me of those 90's Pontiacs with all the bolt on skirts, spoilers and stuff. -- "Our goal (was to make) a billion phones Flash-enabled by 2010...We're actually going to get 1 billion Flash-enabled phones by 2009." -Adobe Chief Technology Officer Kevin Lynch in Nov 2008.

I thought Android was suppose to be open? I thought thats what it was all about?
If I buy a phone with MY money shouldn't I be able to do what I want? If I want to do something that voids my warranty then so be it.
Its not just about loading custom ROM's..Its about the principle of doing what the hell I want with something that I buy that is MINE!!!
If I wanted someone else to make decisions for me on stuff that I buy I would just buy an iphone..
Its not like I am changing the baseband or anything..
If I buy a car I can mod it pretty much anyway I want. Hell I can put a custom engine in it if I want. Maybe they should lock all that out also.
Maybe all Companies should stop us from doing what we want with the stuff that WE buy with OUR money..
Hell we should just be greatful these awesome companies make stuff for us and let me decide how, what we can do with said items!!
