Verizon: Droid X Users Consume 5X More Data
Oh just tell us what you plan to charge us for data already...
by Karl Bode Thursday 22-Jul-2010 tags: business · wireless · bandwidth · Verizon
Verizon business development executive director Jennifer Byrne says that Verizon's Droid X users already consume more than five times more data of any other device. Of course ISPs never reveal raw network congestion data, they just leak bits and pieces of statistics to make a point -- and in Verizon's case it's the supposed necessity of the new restrictive cap and overage pricing model that's expected to arrive at the end of this month. We've pretty much established at this point that smartphone users like to use data, given the devices are just computers. Can we move on to the part where Verizon tells us precisely what they'd like consumers to pay?

Or that the device does not force you to download huge apps via Wifi like that other receptionless device.

Actually, the i4 pulls a weaker signal than the previous generation iPhones. Even the newer, fixed iPhone 4s.

I know after suffering with a BB Storm that on a good day might have pulled up pages at 28k that I'll be playing with the Droid X's web access. I supposed to be grandfathered in with "unlimited" data and if they change the terms I'll just cancel ETF free and move to Sprint and the 4G Evo.

Re: Could it be...

I agree, If I'm not grandfathered in with "unlimited" I'm jumping ship to the Evo. I get a larger discount with Verizon than any other carrier, but a discount on the primary voice plan is meaning less and less anymore with data rates skyrocketing.

I noticed on mine even with wifi turned on it seems to hop to 3G..alot. I had it on my wifi at work and the 88MB Android update (the day I turned it on) seemed to go over wifi.

Might be something to this. The Youtube HD is nice though.

There is. Lots and lots of talk about wifi disconnect issues. And it looks to me like when the wifi connection drops, apps automatically switch to 3G. My account shows I've used over 500Mb of data since I picked up my phone a week ago today. Doesn't sound like a lot, until you consider I haven't used it outside of my house. (where it should be running over wifi 100% of the time)

Thats the first thing I thought when I read it, Toys are used at their most when they are brand new... Once the user settles down, installs a few quality apps things would level out.

But as Karl already hinted at this is more about making it appear that users use too much bandwidth and they have no choice but to increase costs.

I have a work provided Iphone, and a wife always begging me to get her an Android. I am still having a hard time convincing myself that data on a small ass device is worth 30/month so I hope whatever Verizon does with their data plans is more reasonable than AT&T.

They should just make Youtube unlimited data and the rest of the other sites charge for data usage.

If they do that I definitely won't be renewing my contract. I may move to T-mobile if our area is upgraded to 3G this year.

Yup, been a long time loyal customer of Verizon but the minute they move to capped service with over charges I'm moving on to someone else. And if that becomes the standard across the industry I'm fine with going back to using a dumb phone.

Big screen

It's curious that a big screen equates to more data usage. It's maybe the only explanation of why Droid X has 5X more usage than original Droid.

I do use my EVO (large screen) more than Pre (small screen) for web browsing due to larger screen but I use way more data streaming music, which I did just as much on Pre. I tinker with more video on EVO than Pre but don't regularly use it.

There is something about that big screen though. It's not yet a netbook replacement for me but it's getting closer.

@rr.com

Re: Big screen

The obvious reason would not be the larger screen, but the fact that it has only been out for a week. Everyone is still downloading apps and playing with their new toy.

It makes no sense at all that they would release this information less than a week after a new phone's release.

They might as well do this every time they release a new phone. Next it'll be "Droid 2" uses 10x more data than Droid X and Droid.

Re: Big screen

They seem to imply though that Droid X users (first week) are using 5x more data than original Droid and Incredible users the first week.

I point out the big screen because EVO also has a big screen and I no longer take my netbook out with me as I use EVO all the time when on the road, using more data. I still use netbook more at home though. The big screen is somehow the reason why I don't take the netbook with me. When I had a Pre (small screen), I was still taking the netbook out.

What you mention about the Evo is why I jumped from an iPhone to the original Droid, why I hate browsing the web on my Bold 9000, and why I now own an Evo. The larger screen (and 1Ghz Snapdragon) makes web browsing on a mobile device much less frustrating.

Calm down.

It's been out for like a week. Obviously users are going to be testing it out, downloading apps, etc.

Give it time.

Ex. After day one of sales; "1 Million Droid X's are being sold a day!"

The DroidX is one incredible device

Have you seen this thing yet? Had a chance to use or play around with one?

It's going to change the industry and that's why this whole data issue is really going to be an issue going ahead.

It really is the first device (along with the new Sprint EVO) that has finally crossed the threshold between what most of us have been using so far..and what a real portable smartphone device should be all about. It just fits nicely in your pocket but yet has the big screen advantages that just have never been present before in this class of device.
This is what the Iphone 4 SHOULD have been and it's why I don't think antennagate really matters much anymore anyway..because they can't change that phone into this one.

When I first saw it I thought it looked HUGE. And..it is. But the screen real estate is so well used and designed that width wise..it's not much wider than what we've come to expect in a portable device. And so what it really amounts to is something like replacing your 17" monitor at home with a new 22" samsung. And we all know that no one wants the 17 inch screens anymore.

Honestly? I think the Iphone 4 is finished. I don't think it matters anymore antenna or no antenna.

Because now there is the DroidX. And carriers are going to have to come to terms with this and make and keep pricing realistic. Because this is a new generation in devices...and one that is going to demand that fairly priced plans are available. Or..if Verizon won't do it..then someone else will.
Tmobile..or Sprint. This is also their chance to be different and to offer consumers something that coincides nicely with this new device.

Good luck Apple. I really think you need it in the face of this.

IMAGINE

How many units have they moved? 200K... Just imagine if they sold, say... 1.7M in a weekend. Is there a map for that?

It also demonstrates how much well made phones can have an impact on a users browsing/internet habits. Lets hope Verizon took cue's from Ma Bell and has the backbone infrastructure in place to handle the sudden onslaught of heavy usage.

I mean, what are all the angry tech bloggers gonna do if Verizon and its supposed super network fall apart?

(btw, personally, I don't think it will fall apart.... unless they get the iPhone)

Why more than other Android phones?

Why would a Droid X user consume more data than an HTC Incredible user? Or a Droid user or an HTC Eris user?

What I don't understand is...

Why are telcoms complaining about data usage, when every internet operation wants more?

If Droid X uses 5X more data..

.. then charge the Droid X user more money for data...

why would they not do that? .. because those users would most likely skip over the Droid X - so their simple solution is to charge EVERYONE more money in the process.. ahhh subsidy at it's best.

So yea, even PDA phones out there with TOTALLY less capability of that over the Droid X or other android based phones, they get to pay more money too... GREAT concept!!!

Will the new caps allow one to break contract?

It probably dose say that somewhere in the contract, big companies always think about things like this way ahead of time.
honestly Iam on the sprint network, and Iam going to get an evo.I dont mind paying the extra $10 a month( because of the so called 4g using more data then 3g(( and I dont even have 4g coverage in my area, thats bullshit lol). but I will not pay an extra $30 a month for wifi hot spot( If I do that I might as well cancel my optimum service), I rather just root the phone and tether it. but if sprint ever decides they want to cap( I know theres suppose to be a 5gig cap now) or charge more for the evo or newer androids to come, I will jump ship! Iam tired of just dealing with the extra charges. The 9 year relationship will END. Us as customers have to stand up and stick together and these telco companies will stop their shit!

food for thought

If this is suppose to follow the path to high speeds, I'm a little concerned. Back in the days, when we signed up for ISPs to go on the internet, I didn't hear anything about caps. Now that they're capping stuff, they're basically killing data on phones.
