story category Verizon Expands 7Mbps DSL Coverage
Now available to 1.6 million homes...
(old news - 04:20PM Monday Apr 07 2008)
tags: dsl · business · Verizon Online DSL
For Verizon users who can't get FiOS, the phone company is slowly expanding coverage of their 7Mbps DSL tier. Last February, the telco announced the service was now available to some 1.2 million users, and today is stating that they're expanding coverage into 12 additional Texas and 14 additional Indiana communities. With the new announcements, Verizon says they've hit 1.6 million homes with the new tier. While Verizon doesn't offer a complete list of cities where the service is available, you can of course hit up their prequal tool. The 7.1Mbps/768kbps tier costs $40 if bundled with local phone service and the user signs a one-year contract.

This is BS

When i moved into my house 5 years ago i had to wait a few months for DSL and the instant it came online they offered 7.1. A year ago they silently removed the 7 meg tier only to offer it now to try to keep up with cable. This is a total scam.

Re: This is BS

AT&T pulled some of this B.S. as well.

I've been on 3Mbps DSL for +3 years.
Since AT&T has started deploying Uverse in my area, I can only qualify for 1.5Mbps DSL, when my line stats are clean enough to sync up in the 6Mbps range.

Just wait en, in a year or 2 ATT will trump up the new 3mbit service as a way of expanding and offering better speeds. Marketing =).

Yeah - I just had their sales drones come to my house 2 days in a row... attempting to pawn off Uverse TV.
Its bad enough when their sales people are misinformed, but when they attempt to blatently lie to me... I get a little P.O.'d

Yeah that's what I'm afraid of, But We shall see If this is Verizons idea of Red Lining communities they can't sell off that are to them unprofitable, Read "not enough people to make FiOS profitable in 'those' areas" or not.

IF bundled

...with horrible junk fee filled overpiced POTS service.

With overhead you're lucky to see 6.5Mb from it. If it was dry loop for that $40 I would consider it a good deal, but not when you have to bundle with POTS.

Re: IF bundled

Verizon tries to compensate for overhead- I believe this "7Mbps" tier is actually around ~8 Mbps, unlike AT&T's policy.

Re: IF bundled

So what, that's AT&T, and yeah, overpriced. I don't believe for 2 seconds you pay less than $6 total for POTS. $5.70 is the CHEAPEST quoted rate and doesn't include any other fees. And that basic service fee varies from service area to service area, ranging from $5.70 to $10.69 in Cali, plus junk fees, taxes and other charges.

Verizon STARTS at $10 for basic metered service, not including interstate line charges, taxes, junk fees, or any overpriced options like the $1.50 "how dare you not want to be in the phonebook" fee or $7.50 caller ID service.

Re: IF bundled

My Verizon metered service after taxes was closer to $20, so if I were to try and get this $40 ADSL deal, I'm closer to $60/mo.

The forced bundling kills the deal, unless you already are willing to overpay for POTS.

Re: IF bundled

Is POTS really so bad?

You get line power, which is a really good thing. It's also the most reliable of any utility I've used (YMMV, that's just my experience).

The additional cost to get unlimited domestic calling and the other features is also on par to any other alternatives I might have. Considering the downsides of those alternatives, it's totally worth it.

Re: IF bundled

Is $25-$30 more per month than an alternative for reliability make it worth it? Our Comcast Digital voice comes with a battery in the eMTA that lasts 8-10 hours. Plus, power outages where I live occur so rarely, we hardly ever use the back-up battery. Not to mention the Comcast service itself is very reliable too.

I sure think so.

For one thing, it's great for complaining to the power company when the power goes out.

I guess you could do that with the Comcast DV, though you'd have to do it within 8-10 hours, which isn't always possible (vacation, end of work day & power goes out right after you leave for work).

Also, I'm not sure how dial-up works over cable-phone (what I'm calling things like CDV, Charter's Phone, and similar), but if my Internet goes out, dial-up *IS* better than nothing.

You'd be surprised but it's happened more than once when I really needed Internet but my broadband wasn't available.

Another issue is faxing. The ability to fax reliably has saved my butt more than once.

How is faxing over cable-phone?

anonomous

@comcast.net

Re: IF bundled

Fax and dial-up will both work over cable phone. It isn't like regular Voip, where neither is available to use and require a HSI connection. Plus, even if the power is out for more than 8-10 ours, I have a power inverter that plugs into the car cigarette lighter and puts out 400 watts of power, more than enough to power the eMTA, lights, HDTV and our HD-DVR.

@rr.com

You are fortunate to have a good Comcast experience. I just completed a project for the HQ in Philly and was speaking to a VP in charge of the South East Region. He can't even get his Programming menu to display at his own house. I thought this was pretty embarrasing. I rented a place out there for the duration of the project and used the "Tripple-Play" Bundle. Really just used the Video and Data. My VOIP Phone range all the time (Telemarketers calling to congratulate me on my "new home") within days of the service being turned up. So I just un-plugged the phone and used my Cell like I have for the past 10 years. The data speeds were impressive. What was even more impressive was when I used the VPN to connect into the company network. Once the VPN connection was established, my downloads took 1/4 the time! I don't know if I will ever get the chance to download a 2gig image in less than 20 minutes again.

Re: IF bundled

Well some of the Comcast stuff I hate is with the bandwidth hogs stealing all the connection in the neighborhood when someone pays $70 for their internet and only get $14 quality internet. I know you can't compare apples to oranges but I pay $29.99 for Verizon 3Meg and my co-worker pays $47.99 for the same service which all reps tell him that the $29.99 offer was only available for 1 year..But I've had mine for almost 4 years same price same package and he have it bundled with his phone as well as myself.

The prequal tool only tells me that my line already has Verizon DSL. It doesn't tell me if it qualifies for 7.0 or not. I have 3.0, 9400 ft loop.

Have you tried calling up Verizon? It's worth a shot, though I'm generally not impressed by first level CSRs.

Hopefully Verizon is better, but when I called AT&T to get DSL I was first told I can get it, but then told I actually can't get it because I'm 22,000 ft from the C.O. Thus the cable company has a defacto monopoly on the houses within walking distance of where I live. I say defacto because they're the only way to get broadband for $100/mo.

I'm glad I just have an apartment. I'll make sure my next place has DSL available. The DSL has better speeds for the money I'm paying.

UGH...come on.

Screw you Verizon! how about you offer 155k. 768k, 1.5, 3m speed to me. I live in a Urban area! 2,000 within 1-2 miles.

But no the best you can do is 23kbps over crappy landlines.

@comcast.net

IMO...

DSL blows !We used to have DSL from the now defunct Bellsouth. We switched from Comcast because when we first had Comcast Digital voice, it completely sucked. We saw a commercial for a bundle with Bellsouth where on select tiers, you received a free DSL modem and $150 cash back when you switched from cable. So we called and got a landline with 5
calling features & unlimited local and long distance. For DSL, we got the fastest plan they had at the time, DSL extreme 3.0. All together, they said it would be $90 a month for DSL and Phone, around the same price as Comcast. When we set up our DSL, it was relatively fast. We were used to Comcast speed and it seemed to be slower than Comcast, but faster than dial-up. I did a speed test on the Bellsouth website and our speed was 1.5 Mbps! It was Half of the speed we were supposed to get and it was already half the speed of Comcast and for the same price! We called and after 45 minutes waiting on the phone, the CSR was thankfully able to fix the problem. I did a speed test and it was 2.5 Mbps; faster than it was but still slower than it should be. Then, we notice a problem with our connectivity. Our DSL would go out on us every 15-30 minutes . This problem never got solved, even after a tech came out and added a charge of $50 to our already expensive bill. We tried to get the $150 cash back, they disputed it, saying we put it in the mail to late and that we were not eligible to receive it. The final nail in the coffin was the bill. They said it would be $90 a month, well it was $135 a month on average, the same price we paid for TV, Phone and Internet with Comcast. The month the tech came out, the bill was $185. When our DSL kept going out even after the tech came out, we cancelled our Bellsouth service and switched back to Comcast. In the 4 months we had Bellsouth, Comcast was able to fix all the problems with their phone service. Since we had to deal with alllllllll that trouble, I have sworn to never use Bellsouth/at&t again!

Re: IMO...

Well, the problem seems as much with Bellsouth doing a crappy job and charging ludicrously high prices... but DSL can be a good service if done correctly. When I had Verizon DSL the only problem I recall having that was Verizon's fault was that it wasn't available for awhile after we moved to a different part of town...

Re: IMO...

If I ever were to have another bell for service, it would be Verizon, as long as it's FIOS. From what I've heard, they have not done well maintaining their copper plant. And IF FIOS is ever here in Georgia, I just hope they fixed their billing .

Re: It would be nice

At the very least, you aren't stuck with dial-up! You have the 6 Mbps Comcast tier... what's your actual speed though? Where I live there apparently aren't many cable subscribers so our internet speeds are super fast! Yesterday, I was able to get 30 Mbps down 3 up thanks to powerboost and 3 states worth of use going down !

Our node is saturated, something like 250 customers on the node. I see PB up to 12mbps for the first 30-40mb of a file. Other than that my speeds are 6/1.

Can you get FIOS? Or even cable?

I looked up your city on Google and it's not at all rural. In fact it would appear to be within commuting distance to NYC.

EDIT:

I noticed another post by you that said you have Comcast. It beats dial-up, but I'm still sorry since it's Comcast you're dealing with.

At first I thought Charter wasn't that great (who I use), but then I heard about Comcast. I'd take Charter over Comcast any day, and that's saying something.

I live in Maryland also and I got bounced around to different departments and finally someone told me that the 7Mbps package is available in my area; However, I live 9,200ft from the CO and to qualify for the 7Mbps package, the distance is only up to 7,000ft from the CO. This is complete BS because people further away from the CO on my block have the 7Mbps package but not me.
