Company testing set-top service in cooperation with YouTube
(old news - 06:29PM Thursday Jul 24 2008)
tags: Video · competition · business · alternatives · Verizon · Verizon FIOS
Former Sling Media employee Dave Zatz is apparently well loved by the Verizon PR folks (he's often given personal tours of new FiOS TV features at HQ). Zatz was given an early look at the beta test for the telco's FiOS set top box integrated H.264 Internet video offerings. In English, Verizon will be letting FiOS customers watch YouTube, Veoh, Blip.tv and Break.com content from their set top boxes, an idea that could really excite you or bore you stupid depending on your personal technical proclivities. It's expected the functionality won't launch until late this year or early next as part of Verizon's top-tier DVR offerings.

*applause*

So you're paying for TV so why not have video capability built into your STB? Good idea, though let's see how it's executed. Sure beats having to pony up for an Apple TV or some other such magix box to do the same thing. Oh, and the actual video quality should be nice since it's being backed by a 10-50 Mbps connection

Hmmm...

Got a new HDTV?
Got HD programming for that new HDTV?
Hey! Lets display some pixelated, blocky, out of focus - stretched Youtube video on that baby!

Tell ya what, go to YT right now, pick a video, hit the full screen button.
Looks great, huh?
Do the same to the other sources - full screen.
AWESOME!

Sorry, but this is just not sound too appealing.

I think you are missing the news about YouTube doing deals to start supplying better quality YouTube videos. By the time Verizon rolls this out (about a year), YouTube may have much more high quality offerings from Hollywood and not just uploaded crap from people's cell phone cameras.

Re: Hmmm...

my point of view is that is its accessible in my living or bedroom when i want to watch it.

There is so much good/entertaining content out there which my linear broadcast nor vod can pick up. Its endless entertainment when i need it and what i want.

Who knows Verizon will cut a deal with random internet video providers and we get it all in one box.

Re: Hmmm...

On the FIOS website, they claim that, with the Home Media DVR and Home Media Manager software on your PC, you can watch a movie from the internet on any FIOS-connected TV in the home (I assume that would include content from HULU, etc).

Too bad they seem to have jumped the gun on that, as I have the Home Media DVR and Media Manager software on my PC, and I can't stream any video or audio content to any TV in my home. Mark F

If anything, newly uploaded videos if your connection is detected to be fast enough will be played in higher quality. It does for me on my 768k/128k Verizon DSL line without stopping or anything, and the resolution is a lot better and there's Stereo sound. If that doesn't work, just update flash and try the &fmt=18 trick. YouTube did indeed say that they are improving quality, and since their servers are running very fast now (can max a 3Mbps connection for what I know), they could surely handle a bit more load by turning up the quality even more.

EDIT: By the way, YouTube/Google started turning up the video quality starting shortly after the 2008 year started, so any video from January 2008 up to now should have high quality options if the user uploaded a video file with a decent video bitrate.

If either of you would take the time to read it and watch it you would hear them say that it isn't only YT but also other providers AS WELL AS Video that you may already have on your network.

Let's face it...

in true VZ style, it won't see the light of day until 2010 anyway. Maybe YouTube will have the higher rez videos more mainstream by then.

Yeah so you can reach that 40 GB cap faster. At least for TW customers.

Lets also face it before verizon it was Tivo vs Cable + Dish.

But also look at David Zatz postings -- there is a pattern, they bring him, show it and release it within couple of months (previous releases)

I think he is one of their key channels to create buzz and get the word out there.

Media Extender ability?

I wonder if this could be used as a media extender for those who have a home theater PC / server.... that would be icing on the cake.

I agree with you. If they already have done videos i dont see why not personal videos and other content.

net friendly?

WOW...what a parity. On one end comcast wants to shut users down for using the pipe. Verizon seems to be pushing users to use their pipe.

Only downside is more barney in my living room

Here's a thought...

How about letting me setup DVR recordings on my home system via a secure website, view DVR recordings I have made via a secure website and allow me to e-mail DVR recordings to other DVR users in the same cable system or on another cable system?

That's f**king different!

VZ will be offering DVR setting via the Web and cell phones soon. Not sure about the other stuff you mention.

About time!

Is this the only STB that is capable of delivering websites to TV or can some of the existing boxes be programmed to do this?
