Consumers support the service
(old news - 03:06PM Saturday Aug 11 2007)
tags: Fiber · consumers · Verizon · Verizon FIOS
A recent ComputerWorld Magazine survey of broadband users found that consumers think that Verizon FiOS is “head and shoulders above” the competition. The survey had users rate their service based on eight criteria: connection reliability, customer service, download and upload speeds, email service, technical support, value and overall satisfaction; FiOS ranked number one in all of them. Now, if only they’d asked how customers felt about their ISP’s billing practices.

Packet Shaping

I've seen what looks like bit torrent throttling on FiOS. Has any other FiOS customers seen this?

I'm really not sure, hoping others will set me straight.

Thanks.

Even with "forced" encryption between peers? (I believe this an option in uTorrent)

Beats me.

She was using Shareaza when I looked. I don't know if it supports encryption or not.

This is old. This was posted when the article first came out

This is old.

Also in this same SURVERY Cablevision was not included. So this survey means nothing since FIOS's best competition was not included in the survey.

In territory covered Cablevision doesn't amount to a pimple on a fat ass.

I am getting tired of your trolling.

IT does matter because when cablevision was included in this survey they were number one so stop with your trolling.

Truth is not trolling. Only the top six providers were included in the survey. Cablevision is only in NJ/NY area, a local CATV hustler.

quote:
Computerworld magazine reports that the results of its recent survey of more than 1,100 broadband users of the nation’s top six broadband services show that Verizon FiOS Internet stands "head and shoulders above the rest."
I can see why you are getting agitated as your job is going the way of MCI.

Re: This is old. This was posted when the article first came out

If you go back to the last broadband reports news item of this article it specifically states that cablevision wasnt included because they didnt get enough responses back from the customers.

So stop with your trolling. The NYC metro area is a huge money making area that is effecting all of verizons fios service not just i nthat area.

Stop with your trolling. IT matters alot that cablevision was not included in computerworlds results . How can verizon be ontop if all of its competitors were not included.

Fios speed and cost facts

»/faq/12063
5 mbps downstream / 2 mbps upstream - $39.95
15 mbps downstream / 2 mbps upstream - $49.95
30 mbps downstream / 5 mbps upstream - $199.95 [$54.95 in specific areas]
Most users are buying the 5/2 plan, with almost all the rest buying the 15/2 plan. This can be seen from the fios.verizon.net speedtest results here at BBR:

Here is Comcast results as a comparison. Comcast has good results also because of POWERBOOST, which gives high speeds for short bursts. During web browsing, Comcast will be every bit as good as Fios. But Fios will beat Comcast during sustained downloads if you bought the Fios 15/2 tier.

Re: Fios speed and cost facts

Typically, 'most' users do not want to pay huge $$$ unless they are hardcore users (p0rn) or gamers, or resell excess bandwidth to neighbors over WiFi.

Even if I had the option for 30/5 at $54.95.. I don't think I'd see much benefit in using it, unless I was running servers from my house. Give it a few years, and I suspect that will change.

Those (Comcast Rick?) state that big pipes are needed to the house, proof is in the stats, and I suspect that many do not use the high end packages, as they don't typically see much benefit from them.

I'm no marketing person, however, if I were to put a value on this, I'd say that the 'cap' on the average price for HSI is in the $40-50 range.

Re: Fios speed and cost facts

While I agree with some of your assertions, I do disagree with your overall assessment of broadband. First, this is the day and age where parents follow their kids every move with a camcorder. When baby takes his first step, they want to show this video to family instantly. Likewise, many proud parents send these same videos to youtube. Not to mention, kids are no different. They love to webchat, webcam, use youtube, game, and do a whole host of other activities online. This is the technology generation you are looking at. Therefore, to state that many do not want fast speeds is an overstatement. I think there is a large base of users who would sign up for 30/5 pending it was 54.95 in their area. Let's face it, this is the same cost many of us pay already, unless you have DSL. Even at that, I am sure several people would migrate over, even with the added cost. Consequently, while this does not include everyone, I do believe most would happily pay a little more for the luxury of faster internet.

Is this Boost designed to give false high readings on speed tests? Sell the sizzle not the steak.

Motives can be more than 1. It may be designed to do good on speed tests. But it is also very good for downloading several megabyte files that are often used by those who mainly do browsing and email, but also get pictures from relatives. And it also handles very quickly all those automatic software maintenance updates from Microsoft, antivirus vendors, etc.

So, IMHO, Powerboost does give good value to a very large majority of Comcast customers and is NOT just for getting good speedtest results.

But it does nothing for those people who have their computer downloading pirated music & videos all day long. Maybe that is why Comcast rolled out Powerboost instead of just moving the bandwidth caps higher.

That's a pretty narrow view of why someone would want a fast connection.

Is there an upload powerboost, or only download?

Dial-Up Customer Survey

This must have been a survey of Dial-Up customers that only wish they could get FiOS.

Enough Existing Customers would not have rated them so highly.

Not just me complaining, read these boards, read Karl's piece from the other day about Verizon's billing nightmares.

The Facts are IN!

...Looks like 1 percent of verizon customers can get FIOS!

I wish the daily verizon bullshit would end here at BBR! This daily load of crap with VeriZon is getting really annoying.

Re: The Facts are IN!

It's in my market. But I always thought the huge media coverage was a little odd, considering how little of the country is served by it.

Nice to see RR providers react to it from time to time, though.

Billing Dept Sucks.

The billing dept. sucks, but with that being said...
Throttling of bittorrent is not the issue... depending on who the peer carrier is... (ie overseas IPs) you WILL get packet shaped due to the fact that your residential customer.. Your NOT gonna get maximum throughput as overseas connections cost REAL MONEY as opposed to domestic internet data which is full cap until you hit the 1,000 & 1,500 mile radius from your central office... then you see degradation of your speed cap, however Verizon would deny all of this, including putting spin on their billing problems (the fleas come with the telco, sigh...)

For those who have been sticking their head in the sand for the past week.. Verizon put more Long Island, NY towns on the FIOS map... (cablevision's foot print), so if you've got the NON-Triple Play $29.95 overcharged blues.. FIOS might work for you.. May even cause cablevision to raise data rates, prompting another round of free speed hikes to make the pinch of packet shaping less of an issue, hehe
