Verizon & Google Developing iPad Rival
Running on LTE network with 'bucket of megabyte' data plan

Verizon Wireless CEO Lowell McAdam today confirmed that Verizon is working with Google to develop a tablet computer designed to compete with AT&T and Apple's iPad arrangement. Details are virtually non-existent, other than the fact it will probably launch sometime next year, likely run the Google Android OS, and utilize Verizon's as-yet-unbuilt LTE network (at speeds between 5 and 12 Mbps). Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, Verizon once again dropped hints that wireless broadband changes are afoot in terms of multiple devices under one plan (something long overdue). "The old model of one price plan per device is going to fall away," Mr. McAdam told the Journal, adding that he expects carriers to take an approach that targets a "bucket of megabytes."

HP should have WebOS tablet same timeframe

HP should have a WebOS tablet in the same timeframe. And what deals might HP cut with cell providers to allow 3G/4G access as well as WiFi?

Still hope to see Win7 pads/slates as well

While HP appears to have given up, I hope someone will still create Win7 pads. I want to be able to open any type of content that exists, printing, able to connect devices via USB, HDMI, etc. A real OS can do that today.

Win7 pads would also be great for interactive apps like Rosetta Stone, etc.

I'm not really a MS fan, but I want a real OS than can open anything, not a specialty pad. Dual-core Atom processors are coming this summer, which should help performance/power issues. The dual core chips draw less power than single core atom today if I recall.

Im a webOS user today and a pad would be nice, but I'd still rather have a real OS for a pad.

You mean like the ones Archos makes? They also have a Android based tablet as well.

Re: Still hope to see Win7 pads/slates as well

The Archos one is much too slow, on a CPU slower than what is in netbooks. Even the canceled HP Slate had a last year Atom processor, not even current gen. Win7 pads will need the dual-core atom CPUs coming out this summer. Hope that will be enough. If it can perform as well as my current netbook, I'd be satisfied.

I just can't do the iPad, being locked into content that Apple approves. It should've been based on MacOS, not a limited phone OS, but then Apple could control content. Win7 will open virtually every form of digital content that exists as well as most desktop apps.

Dual-core atoms are already here, look at the 330.

The problem is, Windows 7 is designed for the desktop and as such it's not appropriate for touch screen devices. Not to mention that running Win 7 on an ARM device will be sluggish, battery draining and a waste of time.

The new Atom chips are dual core, much faster and draw less power than single core Atom chips. Yeah, Win7 wasn't designed for tablet format, but I hope they don't give up on it as the benefits outweigh it's weaknesses.

The Atom is an ARM processor and there are a few Tablet PCs (Archos 9) running on this processor. It's my understanding that Windows 7 does support ARM processor.

I thought the Atom is an x86_64 CPU.

They were supposed to come out with HP slate but it seems they dropped the idea. They don't want to compete with Apple because they know they won't be able to hype up their product like Apple does.

I setup an ipad for one of my clients the other day (first one i've held) and my FIRST thoughts were "this thing might be killer running Android OS and a REAL (mini or micro) usb port.

I guess. The best thing about the iPad is it's simplicity, and not having a bunch of junk hanging off of it...

That's a good thing for some people, and not so good for others. If this "Google Pad" is like what people seem to think (as a more kitchen-sink solution compared to the iPad), there'll be room enough in the market for both.

If they come out with one like the ipad that does not require contract then I'm all over it. But if its 2yr contract and $60/month forget it.

Power users shouldn't be looking to 3G/4G built in anyway, is a waste... just tether a smartphone.

not gonna happen

if the Nexus One is any example of Google and Verizon working together this won't happen.

I also have used a tablet powered by the Android OS and its slower than a turtle going up a hill with a 500 pound fat lady on its back.

Good Luck

Good Network, Good Plan Concept. Data buckets, reasonably priced (?), make much more sense than punitive overage plans or throttling, though the latter should be an option.

But while Verizon has a history of delivering quality products, they do not have the apple cult / fanboy pull, and the real selling point of any iPad-alike would be (1) content - apple wins hands-down, and (2) apps - anything other than apple will be an "also ran". Google/VZ could potentially win with an "open" apps store, but the jury will be out for a long time.

Verizon also loses on billing credibility. Both Apple and VZ customers are willing to pay a premium for real or perceived quality, but VZ seems to forever have their proverbial butcher's thumb on the scale. Even AT&T billing is more honest.

Google misses on most of its products for a variety of reasons. While they're very good at calculating efficiency from an atomic level, they seem to come up with mediocre unsupported products, label them "beta", throw up them on the wall and see if they stick. The latest? Youtube Movie Rentals.

Google has more hubris than Steve Jobs, when it comes to promoting the "one true way", which they compound by having absolutely no customer service.

I definitely won't be buying one.

Actually it seems like Verizon's trying to put pressure on Apple in its ongoing negotiations.

With the success of the Droid and the Incredible and Android's second place market share rating behind Blackberry, Apple's bargaining power is slipping away. If the iPhone does come to Verizon, I doubt it will be anything like the sweetheart deal Apple got from AT&T.

True, but the hardware is not made by Google. While Android might be pretty cool compared to the iPhone (I own neither so I won't make a comparison), Google itself is not the best of hardware marketers.

Verizon might be better off partnering off directly with HTC.

Google didn't make the hardware for the N1, either... HTC did. I didn't think Google wanted to be in the hardware business.... Are they really looking at making the hardware for the tablet themselves?

All sounds good .. but instead of talking about it ...

All this sounds good.. instead of all this talk... make it
and release it. Talk is cheap ... just make it and release
it to the public ...

Right now, iPad is king .. an their is nothing that comes
close to it. I don't own one and don't plan on getting one.
I had high hopes when HP showed off the HP Slate ... but
right now that's on hold for a redesign.

Right now, their are a few in the works that are due around
Sept. time frame. I think Apple is going to release a second
Gen version of the iPad and it's going to be cheaper and
be very colorful too like the nano's.

Also, a iPad mini too ... half the size of the original iPad,
I figure a Jan 2011 time frame for release with alot of
pretty colors too.
