story category Verizon Hub Will Be VoIP Device
$199 (after rebate) plus monthly contract fee
(old news - 11:15AM Friday Jan 23 2009)
tags: business · alternatives · VoIP · Verizon FIOS · Verizon Online DSL
The other day we discussed how Verizon was finally getting ready to launch the Verizon Hub, a device that integrates home landline and wireless cell functionality. We noted that to avoid being just another failed attempt to make landlines interesting (like the AT&T Home Manager and Embarq eGo systems), it needed to at least support VoIP and better yet -- integrate a femtocell. Verizon confirmed with us this morning the device will have VoIP (unlike it's predecessor the Verizon One), but it won't have a femtocell.

According to Verizon, the Hub (which is made by a company named Open Peak) will run on any broadband connection, though right now only true integration comes when the device is used in conjunction with Verizon Wireless services. Verizon has hinted they may open that up to competing carriers like Sprint or AT&T should the device be successful. We'll wager a guess that won't happen.

According to a press release to be issued shortly, Verizon believes this is "a dynamic move sure to rattle devotees of plain old home phones." The price tag may have something to say about that -- particularly during a tight economic downturn. The device will cost $199 after a $50 rebate, require a two year contract -- and will require a $34.99 Verizon Hub and Digital Voice service plan. The device launches Februay 1, and we'll be sure to post user impressions.

@speakeasy.net

i would rather wait for wimax

wimax promises cheap mobile internet plans...so it makes sense to simply get a pda that runs skype and make calls using skype...thats all

They've been talking about Wimax for how many years now? Hope you're patient.

You need a Verizon home phone line & caller-ID & Verizon phone mail. The last 2 options usually come included in an unlimited calling plan.

Not true. It says that dial-up internet users must have at LEAST a 30 kbps connection for it to work. »https://www22.verizon.com/callassistant/···uide.pdf

Anyone have a link showing all of the features?

I have Verizon wireless service, so this might be interesting to me, especially if there's a cost savings over Comcast CDV.

Will it work everywhere? Or just in Verizon's footprint? This article would seem to indicate that it may be the former.

Fee

Just to use this thing the want a monthly fee after the $199 plus are banking on the interest before that rebate is sent out!? WTF!

Totally not worth it.

Re: Fee

Depends on what it'll do for you. Speaking of which, what does this thing do? What's the benefit? I have two lines with VZW, what does $199 +$35/mth get me? I'm all for technology, but this seems like an attempt to force a product into a niche that doesn't exist.

a niche that doesnt exist and wont ever, had this phone been as standard land line phone that simply can make use of fios or dsl along with standard phone service and with either no fee or significantly smaller one i could see it making some progress but no.

You need to have internet AND cellular plan for the thing to even be purchased and then you pay an additional 35$ a month for 2 years no less? Come on V buy a clue, in this market you need to have expensive gadget with low to non existent fee and not tied in to other services to even work....sheesh

So what does it do?>>>>>>>

Good question. I'm moving in March and dropping my landline. I've been testing MagicJack and it works just as good as my landline, with a cell phone for backup I don't see any use for me.

@verizon.net
Agreed. Would you run Windows or Mac OSX if you had to pay a monthyly fee? I'm already paying $$ for FIOS. Except for the fee, this would be a GREAT kitchen wall phone for $200.

@qwest.net

Get Real Verizon

I have FIOS and I've been reading and waiting on the Hub for a year. I couldn't wait to have an email, internet device in the kitchen. I was willing to pay the $199 or even $250 prive but now I have to pay $35 a month? FORGET IT VERIZON. You are getting all you are going to get from me each month already. I'll put a PC there and get the same (if not better) functionality I need at a one time cost.

No more contracts

I doubt it'll work, Verizon is already taking their clients for everything they can get, you'd be a fool to sign into such a large commitment in this day and age. The economy is fragile at best and having a contract that you have to pay every month when your financial freedom may get worse is just asking for trouble. I recommend to everyone to cancel all contracts as soon as possible and move towards a cash only life-style. Pre-paid cell phones are not only cheaper than contracts but you are not tied to a two year commitment. I have given up my Verizon contract for a Tracfone that is saving me tons of money.
