Verizon Keen On Offering Home Automation Services
Endless new possibilities for strange new fees...
by Karl Bode Wednesday 08-Sep-2010 tags: business
Verizon has made no secret of their interest in expanding beyond broadband and eventually becoming a company that offers you, well, everything -- including home automation and security services. To that end, Verizon has invested in home automation outfit 4Home, continuing a long-standing partnership (the two showed off home automation services for LTE back at CES Last January). Of course maybe before Verizon gets into smart refrigerators they can offer FiOS users that 802.11N-capable router they told us was supposed to arrive last month? We've asked for an update on that, but in the mean time you can check out some of what 4Home offers here.

Verizon

What good is that? Home automation should do the laundry, clean the bathroom, scoop the cat pan, load the dishwasher, etc.

absolute power ....

are you ready to put this kind of control in the hands of a company that might sell out to the Feds and give them control of your dishwasher? Imagine the horror.

Which router is that? The Actiontec Rev. F? The Rev. F isn't true 802.11n. Only the upcoming Rev. G is and it's still in testing last I heard.

I'm assuming Zero See Profile is referring to the single 2.4 GHz radio and the single antenna.

What's the suprise?

This has long been the goal for FIOS and cable companies.
TV, internet, phone, home security and a host of other SUBSCRIPTION services, is the payoff for the buildout investments they made.
Some (more techinical) users will want to DiY it, but for many the "one call, one company" does it all, will be the choice.

As long as you get a bigger discount with the more services you bundle, I'm all for it.

Right So Far

While TW correctly projected the $160 Triple-Play bill years ago, so too, VZ recognized people will pay more for premium service.

Call me sexist, but women buy those Brinks commercials with the scary-but-attractive-in-a-romance-novel-way white guys breaking down the door, and $30+/month alarm contracts sell like hotcakes.

Likewise for "Help! I've fallen and I can't get up" - another $30 a month for a wireless pendant and a "monitoring center". With implantable technology, remote medical sensing will promise "your diagnostics forwarded to the Death Panel Health Response Team in real time for analysis".

TelePresence hasn't made it to the home office yet, but when it does, it will mostly require a GeekSquad level install to work reliably. Another $40/month or more.

VZ would be crazy to ignore such lucrative, long-term rental income opportunity.
