Verizon LTE Now Covers Half of U.S. Population
As 15 Additional Markets Come Online This Week
by Karl Bode Wednesday 17-Aug-2011 tags: coverage · business · consumers
Verizon today announced that the company has expanded their LTE wireless broadband coverage to fifteen additional markets, and expanded coverage in ten cities where LTE has already been launched. According to a Verizon press release, the company's LTE network now covers 117 markets and 160 million Americans – or more than half the U.S. population. As of this week LTE will be available in Tucson, Ariz.; Fayetteville/Springdale/Rogers, Ark.; Bakersfield and Salinas/Monterey/Seaside, Calif.; Fort Collins, Colo.; Frederick, Md.; Worcester, Mass.; Omaha, Neb./Council Bluffs, Iowa; Albany, Ithaca and Syracuse, N.Y.; Altoona and Johnstown, Pa.; Memphis, Tenn.; and Provo, Utah. The company says they're also expanding coverage in Washington, D.C.; Tampa, Fla.; Atlanta, Ga.; Baltimore, Md.; Boston, Mass.; Lansing, Mich.; New York, N.Y.; Cincinnati and Columbus, Ohio; and Salt Lake City-Ogden, Utah. Verizon plans to have 175 markets served by LTE by the end of the year.

I'm a fanboi, but then again I also have unlimited 4G and I'm grandfathered.

He should have gotten an LTE phone and plan before unlimited was phased out.

Re: Yawn...

Can you upgrade from a 3G phone with the grandfathered plan to a 4G phone and keep your unlimited plan? I've heard conflicting answers to this question.

Someone should tell the CWA workers who are striking outside of my local VZW store.....

I guess they went for the only building in town with "Verizon" on the side that anybody cares about. Striking outside the Central Office would probably only be noticed by telco geeks.

Exactly! All the innovation and progress is absolutely meaningless with the caps IMO. Was going to switch to VZW until they decided to be lime AT&T. No thanks!

Yet both VZW and AT&T continue adding subs. Such meaningless innovation. Perhaps these companies should withhold their investments in infrastructure and pay out more to shareholders?

They get subs because they're the only ones with nationwide coverage. Sprint's starting to catch up, but they're not nearly there yet.

That's not "innovation". That's just buying out competition and setting up huge barriers to market.

How many of their subs really need nationwide coverage? How many succumb to the brilliant marketing?

You are correct. I got in on the unlimited plan, so I'll be okay for a couple of years. Otherwise, so what?

Only for so long, after this starts being implemented I bet you could see Androids staying on for multiple days, hell even 2 weeks with the extended batteries.

I remember seeing something like that at CES, if not the same thing. It reduces screen quality significantly. No one will settle for a lesser image unless it's marketed as a "long battery life phone", but then it becomes a niche market.

There are advances in battery tech coming up though so it won't matter too much.

You gotta remember, it's new tech, and new tech always takes time to mature, I can see this actually working.

Those prototypes never make it to the market. We know this from all those alternate energy plans that were never developed.

Verizon says 5-12 Mbps so I assume this is LTE (3G) not LTE-A which is 4G.

Whatever it is, a low cap and high overage prices make it nothing to really get excited about.

AMEN! I've noticed my 3G connection is getting better. It'll never be what it was during the Alltel days (2.2-2.5Mb down), but I'll take what I can get out here in Broadband Apartheid-land.

1/2 the population yet...

I'm 5 miles from Los Angeles city limits (Santa Clarita - pop 160,000), no LTE here, no WiMAX here.
The only 4g is the 'fake' 4g of T-Mobile and AT&T.

Why so few LTE handsets?

Why is Verizon so slow to add new handsets to their LTE lineup? I will only buy a phone with a slideout keyboard and Verizon offers none for LTE. I would have switched from T-Mobile to Verizon and locked in unlimited data if they offered such a phone. But they don't.

Meantime the other carriers offer a very nice selection of "4G" phones. Yet Verizon is the only LTE provider and their handset selection sucks.
