Verizon Launches New Apple-Esque 'Destination' Stores
by Karl Bode 06:01PM Thursday Jan 09 2014
Add Verizon to a long list of companies trying to mirror Apple's success with their Apple stores and genius bars. The telco last month unveiled their first new "destination" store in the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota. According to Verizon, the new redesigned stores offer users education, support, and hands-on demonstrations of wireless products and services. The company also says they'll be upgrading their existing 1,700 retail locations so they're effectively miniature versions of these newer retail "experiences." AT&T unveiled their own variation on this concept back in August. It's unclear if actual consumers believe the new retail outlets make ma bell any sexier.

AT&T had a Chicago IL store like this 5-10 years ago

in the Loop downtown. They used to advertise it, on the radio. Never went to it, but sure some Chicagoans can verify it.

They used it to sell both cell phones and U-Verse, besides helping/training customers.

Retail Experience

Maybe they should first focus on not just the store design but also being able to serve customers. I was going to buy an iPhone 5s on a Friday night, they only had one person and there were 8 people ahead of us. Not a single person was served in the 40 minutes in store. In that same amount of time Saturday, I ordered the phone and had it shipped to Montana. If I were a new customer, I am not sure I would choose Verizon after that experience.

Re: Retail Experience

I was by the store Friday and they had a crap load of people working and not many people in the store.

Hey Verizon!!

What I really need is reliable, high-quality service backed by a store staffed with competent employees who can address problems quickly and professionally. I get enough dumb looks from my own employees and I don't need more from a vender. At the rates you charge it shouldn't be possible for me to know more about VZW services than even the lowest paid associate in your corporate store. If a shiny new store with a warm fuzzy feeling can fix stupid and the local cell site then a store upgrade is long overdue.

Re: Hey Verizon!!

that is the problem their workers are so low paid and just push what VZW tells them to push so they can get that commission check.

They are not there to help the customer.

Re: Hey Verizon!!

Anybody who isn't a pushy salesperson is quickly weeded out.

Seriously the people there just babble nonsense and blind reassurance until you get tired or fall for what they are saying.

How is this different?

They have stores that sell you products and help troubleshoot something not working. It sounds like the only real difference is some additional educational classes, and a new look, and the rest is just back-end enhancements that should be able to work at any of the stores (like integrating online transactions and in-store pickups). Not sure what the huge deal is.

ma bell ain't sexy

These "me too!" initiatives by ma bell are just sad. Simply submit to being the dumb pipe (and wireless) provider and be content. It's a huge cash cow plus you get paid by the NSA and friends to pass customer data along gleefully.
