Verizon Offers First Demo Of Voice Over LTE
Says They'll Offer It Commercially Sometime In 2012
by Karl Bode Monday 14-Feb-2011 tags: business · wireless · bandwidth
As was expected, Verizon Wireless is at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain -- highlighting their shift from dedicated circuit-switched technology to the voice over LTE (VoLTE) data protocol. The shift is expected to begin in 2012, with Verizon noting the primary benefit will be the delivery of higher quality voice, something they're expected to demo today. Verizon's also busy highlighting this week that Verizon users will soon finally be able to browse the Internet and talk on the phone simultaneously. Competitors have made a big deal about this shortcoming in marketing, though the jury is out about just how big of a deal this really is for most consumers.

Verizon is telling conference attendees in Spain that initially, consumers will have the choice of making either a a standard 3G phone call or a 4G VoLTE call -- because the latter won't be able to hand off to the former. Once Verizon's network is fully LTE (expected by the end of 2013), all voice calls will be VoLTE and Verizon will eventually re-purpose the spectrum from their older CDMA/EVDO network.

This Ericsson press release and this VoLTE white paper have additional technical detail for those interested. The latter of those two specifically explores the various fixes carriers have to implement as they juggle traditional voice, VoLTE, data and SMS transmissions over LTE networks that for the next few years will remain only partially built.

It's of course far too early to discern how the natural evolution of voice to full data will impact your caps or monthly bill. It's expected that Verizon will be again shifting with their LTE data pricing once the first LTE smartphones appear later this year.

VoLTE pricing? Minutes or bytes used? Voice only phones? Etc

Once VoLTE becomes the only voice method on Verizon, say in 2015 or thereabouts, it brings up some interesting questions. Will you still be able to buy a voice only phone? And if you can, how will they bill for calls? Minutes like you can today and also unlimited voice calling for a price? Or will they only sell phones that do both voice and data, with no other options possible where you have to buy a UBB data plan?

As voice, SMS, email, apps, video calling, etc all just become data on a single connection, how will the service providers structure their billing plans to slice and dice the possibilities. The easiest straight forward way is to just treat all of it as pure data billed by the byte. Whether that per byte billing is tier based with overages and caps or a flat connection fee and pure billing per byte after the flat connection fee will be a hot topic for years to come.

verizon claims they will be killing off CDMA & EVDO to reuse that spectrum. Eventually, there will be no CDMA voice at all. Will it be 2015 or later? Who knows for sure. But it will come, just like the major carriers all killed off their analog cell services.

I never said they'll never get rid of CDMA only. Verizon said that they'll keep CDMA 1x until 2018-2020. It's not going anywhere just yet because it's a very stable voice platform.

Yeah, there's more to just matching CDMA coverage. VoLTE needs to be just as reliable as CDMA and that will take time to mature.

I would expect so. After all, data is data and I doubt that wireless providers are yet willing to alienate (potential) customers when wired voice options are still readily available.

I would expect this an opportune time to bump everyone to an unlimited calling plan for $xx/mth. With almost ubiquitous unlimited calling available for wired phones and the encroachment of unlimited minute tiers by wireless providers, I think it'll be advantageous to stop counting minutes and instead focus on tiered data plans similar to what wired ISPs offer now with various bandwidth (speed) offerings.

LTE-Advanced

So I was thinking VoLTE was coming with LTE-Advanced, which VZW has not yet implemented. Is VZW developing their own proprietary VoLTE?

iPhone/iPad?

What does this mean as far as an LTE iPhone?

As for the iPad, it's not sold as a voice device, so I figure that an LTE iPad will show up before an LTE iPhone....

Apple's reasons for skipping LTE on the Verizon iPhone: Design compromises...

Whether that means larger size or shorter battery life, perhaps there's more design flexibility in the iPad?

Opinions?

I still think it means that you'll see the LTE-capable iPhone 5 in summer of 2012. But considering Android will be running on many LTE-capable handsets real soon, the iPhone continues to become less and less relevant.

Less relevant...pfff. The wireless companies have redefined themselves around the iphone.

Re: iPhone/iPad?

Redefined themselves? Really? Don't get me wrong, Apple moved the market in 2007 with the iPhone. The question is, what has the iPhone done since then? My answer is, not much. Apple is a great marketing company, hence the continued success of the iPhone. Maybe the iPhone 5 will make another revolutionary move, because Apple needs one IMO.

VOLGA

VZ really has no other choice but to go with GSMA VoLTE given they do not have a GSM-based infrastructure.

A far smarter and lower cost option for those that want to reuse their GSM-based switching infrastructure is VOLGA...

One can either take IMS... full CAPEX and OPEX upgrade to essentially offer the same set of voice and SMS services AND also be forced to upgrade their GSM based infrastructure to support voice and service continuity.

Or take VOLGA... reuse CS infrastructure and offer the same set of voice and SMS services as before with no operational changes and reduced CAPEX via reusing the CS service infrastructure. The technology is substantially based on GAN & UMA which has been inservice for years in T-Mobile and FT to provide operator voice services via WiFi.

technology vs business

I think VOIP is a good thing. As usual all the CEO and accountants and business people "need" to turn VOIP into the new cash cow because VOIP is here to stay. I was saying in an earlier thread that for something like $50 to $60 a month to have unlimited voice, text and data. However I will doubt that will happen they will find a way to charge at least $100 and up for unlimited everything for one line. I am sure the wireless carriers will figure a way to make money off of it even that VOIP will be way cheaper for them in the long run.

Wired home line Internet has proven that voip can be free or extremely cheap. Will we see that in the wireless sector ? I doubt it.

I think the only way to escape the greedy hands of wireless carriers of today is to have wifi everywhere but who knows how long that will take 25 years, maybe 50 years. But then again most likely will be some other "provider" that will provide wifi all over the place but they will most likely be just as greedy....

Totally different markets and technologies. I don't believe it's fair to compare wired and wireless VoIP. Besides, VoIP offerings from cablecos and telcos are not close to free, and those will be the realistic comparisons to VoIP offered by wireless providers. Want extremely cheap or free, then go with the likes of Skype.

Priced on speed

Once LTE is fully implemented, I think they will price based on internet speed, the same as they do with all home internet. Remember Verizon is counting on LTE to be used as home internet in rural areas.

Agreed. Counting minutes will be a thing of the past for the most part and consumers will buy tiered wireless plans similar to the plans offered by most wired residential ISPs.
