Verizon Offers Free Wi-Fi To 3G Users
Though clunky, annoying restrictions remain...
Back in July, shortly after calling Cablevision's free Wi-Fi a "marketing stunt," Verizon began offering select broadband customers free Wi-Fi. As noted at the time, the service wasn't extended to Verizon Wireless users or base package DSL users, required a third party application that only works on Windows, and wasn't usable on home PCs (netbook/laptops only). In a bit of good news, Verizon today announced that they're at least now extending the offer to mobile broadband (note: wireless data, not wireless phone) customers eager to browse Wi-Fi via a laptop/netbook. Says Verizon:

When within range of a Verizon Wi-Fi hotspot, customers can use VZAccess Manager to connect with a Wi-Fi-enabled notebook or netbook computer. When they are ready to move, but want to remain connected, or if they want the added security of the Verizon Wireless network, customers can simply switch back to Verizon Wireless' 3G wireless network, which is the largest and most reliable in the country. These choices can help them manage their monthly data allowance by potentially preventing overage charges and saving the allowance for when mobility is needed.

While extending free Wi-Fi to 3G card customers is certainly welcome, Verizon still hasn't fixed many of the restrictions that make this offer unappealing to customers. Mac and Linux users still can't use the application, and Verizon's still restricting regular wireless -- and home PC users -- from taking advantage of the service. Given they'd normally be using the Verizon FiOS or Verizon DSL they're required to have to get the service, that doesn't make sense -- and free Wi-Fi at home might at least make a nice backup option for outages.

Meanwhile, while Verizon professes concerns about your bill, you'll recall that Verizon Wireless recently stopped offering smartphones to users who don't also sign up for data plans. Some users preferred simply using a smartphone over Wi-Fi to avoid monthly charges, so Verizon put an end to that. Verizon giveth, Verizon taketh away. You'll also note that this extension of the Wi-Fi offer is only going out to users who have Verizon EVDO laptop cards already, and probably won't even use Wi-Fi much. As such, this still feels like a half-hearted "me too" offer from a carrier that's been mocking other, better Wi-Fi efforts.

Free wifi at home??

What Verizon access point would you connect to in your house?

Anyways if your house was in range of a Verizon access point how can they stop you from installing the software on a PC and why would you do that when you already have internet in your house?

The whole point of the free wifi is when you are traveling.
I have used free ATT wifi at airports, hotels, and mcdonalds while traveling in the past.

I would say the number of house within a few hundred feet of a hotspot would be very, very small. Although, here at the office I'm half mile away from a McDonalds' hotspot and I use that as a backup to Embarq CenturyLink DSL with a 26 dBi grid on the roof.

Well,

as Verizon taketh, I giveth... my [wireless] business to someone else. (And speaking of bills: will they ever get it right?)

Have we met?

Perhaps its just deja vu, but this sounds a lot like the plan Verizon had about 4 years ago. For those who dont recall, they blanketed New York City with wifi (special adapters installed on many phone booths) that was only accessible to DSL subscribers. The coverage was actually quite good, but they tore out all the AP's just when people started using it. They were concerned it would "cannibalize" the sales of their 'then new' EVDO service. Funny how they are now offering wifi to those same customers.....

Verizon Wi-Fi allows customers to access the Internet, making it easy to browse the Web, stay on top of social networks, or complete business tasks whenever they need to be done. To take advantage of Verizon Wi-Fi, customers must have a monthly Mobile Broadband or GlobalAccess plan. They must also have a Verizon Wi-Fi supported device, including a Mobile Broadband USB modem, PC Card, ExpressCard®, Verizon Wireless MiFi(TM) 2200 Intelligent Mobile Hotspot, or a notebook or netbook with Mobile Broadband Built-In running Windows® 7, 2000, XP or Vista. A full list of Verizon Wi-Fi supported devices can be found at www.vzam.net.

To use Verizon Wi-Fi, customers must also have VZAccess Manager version 7.2 or higher installed on their PCs. To upgrade to VZAccess Manager 7.2, visit www.vzam.net or select "Check for Upgrades" from the Help menu of VZAccess Manager.

You must have Mobile Broadband plan to take advantage of it.

What do you mean a Mac can't use it?

If you have to use VZAccess Manager to access their WiFi network, then yes, you can use a Mac on this.

You just have to install VZAccess Manager for Mac and wammo blammo.

VZAccess Manager 7.2.0 or higher (for Windows) allows Mobile Broadband users (for select devices) to access the Internet at thousands of Verizon Wi-Fi hotspots

the vzaccess manager for mac is for verizon wireless 3g connectivity ONLY. It does not support wifi.

attempts to even register to allow wifi access at

»activate.verizon.net/fiosreg/too···fi/start

yield the following error

We're sorry, but we detected you are using an unsupported operating system.

Verizon Wi-Fi currently supports:
Windows XP (32-bit only), Vista and Windows 7

I'm confused...

in order for me to make use of this I still need to have their software running on my netbook, right? Why can't I just have my wireless antenna pick it up and login with my verizon.com/.net info - like I do when I want to program my DVR? I can go to Starbucks and use their's without the need of software or hardware and I'm just buying coffee...

Re: I'm confused...

You probably can use this without their software. Ive been logging into my Verizon Wireless Broadband Acct for years without using their Software. They just dont want to make that type of claim as they dont want to provide support for just using Windows Networking features, and I do not blame them.

I have used this at airports (FIOS customer)

I can indeed verify that you CAN NOT use this without their software. Your regular logins will not work for their wifi captive portals. You need to download the hotspot manager software at home, complete the signup, have it check requirements, etc... --then-- when you are at one of their hotspots, you have to run the background manager you installed at home. This will scan for network connectivity to a particular boingo server. When found, it will automatically pop up a dialog for your verizon wifi login. It's probably easy to reverse-engineer the exchange that takes place, but I simply don't have the motivation to do it.

I'm confused also

Is Karl saying that Verizon FiOS or Verizon DSL customers can't get free wifi from Verizon?

I remember getting an email a few months ago saying that wifi is free wherever they offer it. In fact, it is on their web page:

»www22.verizon.com/Residential/Hi···ures.htm

AT&T - are you watching???

"Meanwhile, while Verizon professes concerns about your bill, you'll recall that Verizon Wireless recently stopped offering smartphones to users who don't also sign up for data plans."

Maybe AT&T should eliminate this restriction for iPhone users and free up some of their bandwidth.

I was under the impression that if you have an iPhone, you MUST subscribe to the $30/month data plan
