Verizon Offers HD Video On Demand
75 titles in five FiOS TV markets
by Karl Bode Wednesday 05-Dec-2007 tags: Video · business · HDTV · Verizon FiOS
We knew they've been testing it for much of the year, but Verizon today announced that they're offering high-definition video on demand service in select FiOS TV markets. According to Verizon, the service is now available in Richmond and Virginia Beach, Va.; Tampa, Fla.; Fort Wayne, Ind.; and Pittsburgh. It will soon be launched in the Washington, DC, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Additional markets will be coming online next year.

According to Verizon, their initial HD VOD offering contains around 75 HD titles. They've previously stated that they plan to make roughly 1,000 titles available next year. Their standard definition VOD library sits somewhere around 10,000 titles. Last month the company announced that they plan to offer 150 HD channels by the end of 2008.

Comcast...

And the like better wake up. They like to say that they've been around forever and do you really want to trust Verizon giving you TV, but if they keep going at the rate they are, cablecos might be the next dinosaurs.

Re: Comcast...

Yeah, they have. That's not the point I was trying to make. Verizon's new, but they are catching up fast. If the cablecos don't get off their butts fast enough, Verizon stands a decent chance of doing to them with TV what they did to Verizon with phone service.

Re: Comcast...

Yes but cableco like Cablevision have been doing a great job of expanding their hd linup. Cablevision every month or so has been adding atleast one hd channel. I think thats a great schedule to keep with regards to adding hd channels.

Re: Comcast...

And they need to, that's all I'm saying. But Verizon is blazing to catch up, and if they don't stop or slow down once they do, they will leave cable in the dust. Cable has already seem to have blown it on the internet side waiting on DOCIS 3, which is estimated to bring nothing but higher d/l speeds (but not u/l) to some markets by the end of next year. So in reality, in 2-3 years, cable might be where FIOS is now. If they take the same approach with TV and sit on their asses and take it easy, they are screwed.

If Verizon did to TV what they did to phone that would be a complete F'ng disaster for them. you do know they are LOSING thousands of their phone customers everyday dont you ??????

Read it again, and pay attention this time. If Verizon does to Comcast with TV what Comcast did to Verizon with phone service.

They are loosing the customers not because of bad service but because of bundling and cell usage.

"but if they keep going at the rate they are, cablecos might be the next dinosaurs."

They were dinosaurs from day one.

The tech that installed my FIOS TV said they're working loads of overtime, day off, hiring new installers and they're still falling behind the demand is so huge in our area.

It's going to be awhile before Verizon can build out its infrastructure into every market that Comcast and other cablecos hold monopolies, but when they arrive the cableco get slammed hard.

They're not even comparable products at this point Verizon FIOS is so far out a head it's not even funny. I've had them both and Comcrap couldn't pay me to come back to them.

Tech said the same thing here on Monday during my install... I saw over 20 Verizon trucks today, only 2 cable company trucks! Simply AMAZING how disgusted people are with the cable companies.

So what?

These comments are bizzare! Do you people even know how this stuff works? You are talking about this like it's the second coming or something. It will be years before most markets see this and so it's fibre. Big deal. Coax from the cableco's can easily compete in the medium term and long term their backbones are already fibre so they can expand on that.

Re: So what?

I hear what you are saying. But in thinking that Fios is now offering HD VOD after not having it since FIOS TVs rollout as outpacing cable... well, thats just insane.

Cable invented VOD.
There can be some ho-dunk company doing more then cable and FIOS combined... would you really say "TECHSTAR CABLE COMPANY IN TEXAS WILL MAKE FIOS AND CABLE DINOSOURS!"
Probably not.
They will keep outdoing eachother over and over again. Fios isnt outpacing anyone.
Cable rolled out fiber to the node, first to do it. Fios extneded that to the home. You KNOW cable will once DOCSIS 3.0 buys them some time to develop their strategy.
Cable developed VOD, Now Fios has it... what else is Fios going to REVOLUTIONIZE after its already been done.. and done well, by everyone else?

Saying Cable will be a dinosaur is one of the most niave statements Ive ever read.
Cable will remian competitive, do whatever it has to in protecting its interests, holdings and ventures. Just like any company.
Take a company like comcast, 24million customers and growing.. not a dinosaur anytime soon.

Increased competition from the telcos, YES. But again, cable got into phone way before telcos got into TV. So who REALLY is playing catch up?

Re: So what?

Well, my use of dinosaur is the same way I would desribe Verizon and what happened to them with phone service, so not really not naive, just exaggerated, lol. You guys really just read way too much into things. I guess you really are a tool. FIOS is moving fast right now because they have to. Cable isn't doing much right now but waiting on DOCIS 3. If they both continue on the pace they are on, cable may very well find itself in a hole. That's it, just a simple thought. No major predictions, no slamming of your prized cable.

Re: So what?

Did cable phone service make Verizon a dinosaur? Did Cables All digital platform and VOD make sattelite a dinosaur?

Ill say this. When cable rolled out phone they didnt do it offering 3 features at the same price as the Telcos. They did it offering MORE fetures then the telcos could even offer at a lower price all around.
No one was clammering saying the telcos wil be Dinosaurs. They stated there is heated competition.

Everytime Verizon farts latelty a lot of naive techies and consumers clammer and point with glee. They are still playing catch up. With both services AND penetration. There will not be ONE dominant provider.
I believe strongly that fiber to the home is everyones endgame. In that respect I dont believe cable is threatened.

Everyone will constantly one up the next. Both technologies and companys will be in the game for quite some time.

But again, a news story announcing a long overdue addition to Verizons VOD line up is hardly even news worthy. What is more news worthy is the fact that it didnt exist initially.

But then that would cast everyones savior in a poor light.
And we cant have that. Not on this board.....

Re: So what?

If Verizon doesn't get off their ass, yeah, phone service for them very well may be a thing of the past. Comcast flew up behind them and is leaving them in the dust. They've done nothing to counter it. The same could happen here if they don't start doings something other than waiting for DOCIS 3. That's it. That's all I'm saying. Not it will happen, not that Verizon is a savior, not that cable sucks, nothing. Pull your head away from your cableco's dick for two seconds to read that. And make sure to wipe the load from your eyes first, too.

Re: So what?

I didnt realize I was talking with a 12 year old. My bad.

Sayinig the cablecos are"waiting" for D3 and doing nothing else is pure ignorance.
Just like saying Verizon is "waiting" to develope new content for VOD. All these companies are working feverishly, publishing what they want, when they want but there is an entire world and emerging technology behind every company that you wont know about until its time.

Ill let you get back to your Suite life of Zack and Cody and WoW now.. sorry about the distraction.

What bulletpoint now, Comcast?

When I called to cancel my Comcast for my pending FiOS TV order, all the rep counter was that VZ didn't have HD VOD.

Now what?

Pleazzz, if you read this forum enough, you have to know that you can't put your 2 cents into any customer rep's hands.

Verizon - Fumble with customer service!

Verizon is going to drop the ball big when they have to handle customer service...

I dealt with Verizon and it was horrible. I had to call 4 times in a single day and got different answers every time I called. It was as if each person was looking at completely different information regarding the same issue. I want the correct answer the first time....not at Verizon
