Verizon Offers Large Data Bucket Promotion of Their Own
Not to be outdone by both AT&T and Sprint's promotions offering double data allotments for the same price on their largest bandwidth tiers, Verizon has offered up a similar promotion of their own. According to the company announcement, Verizon's bumping the data allotments provided on shared usage plans with allotments of 12 GB and up (check out the infographic below). As with AT&T and Sprint's plans, these promotions are great if you already planned to sign up for large data buckets, but don't do much for the majority of users who prefer smaller and less expensive plans.

How interesting

With three giant huge corporations offering plans within 2 days of each other...

.. it's almost if there is market fixing and sector planning going on.

Re: How interesting

I disagree. T-Mobile could respond if it wants to... The T-Mobile CEO tweeted how these increases are smoke and mirrors.

Smoke and mirrors isn’t a strategy, #Randall. Unlimited without overages is STILL better. #math101

Freedompop unlimited 3G for $15 a month, unlimited talk and text another $5 a month, unlimited tethering for up to 8 devices, $10 a month. Freedompop uses the Sprint network.

I would absolutely love to see 8 devices try to simultaneously use a Sprint 3G connection.

I've actually done that, USB tethered to an HTC Touch Pro into a laptop which then shared it out into a WLAN router serving up to that many devices connected - for an entire group of tech-support associates. It worked! Back in the day, good 3G speeds were 2Mbps+. =)

This is what competition looks like. One vendor offers a better deal, and the others match or undercut it. It's like bidding at an auction, on macro scale.

Market fixing is when prices, quality, or features don't change at all -- by mutual agreement.

Within hours?

I've been on hold longer for Verizon support than they reacted.

Re: How interesting

Have you ever watched how fast a gallon of gasoline or a gallon of milk can change price up or down among stores in the same local area? It usually happens within a couple of days. We are now seeing something similar in cellular based telecommunications. The USA is in bad economic times. The cellular market is almost saturated. The companies are going to have to compete for customers and revenue in some manner. With "unlimited" text and voice on many cellular plans, data allocations are almost all that remains for the cellular companies to compete with.

I can't wait until they find something else to monetize for profit. I imagine they'll have to find out how many photons travel down a fiber or electrons down a coaxial... Or how many watts are being used to keep that 4G/LTE signal up for your usage.

$375 for 100GB?!? Who the phuck comes up with these prices??

Re: How interesting

You must be forgetting the years when that cellular wireless 100 GB would have cost $3,750. The constant dollar cost, to the end user, per cellular wireless GB, has slowly being reduced over the past decades.

Do any of these companies give a damn that there

is an ever growing number of single people out there? Not everyone has 5 children and needs 10 line framily whatevers. You ever going to double the bucket for single lines that aren't paying you hundreds a month or are we just too insignificant for you to give a shit? I had hoped when my contract ran out that you might offer me a discount to upgrade to higher usage but you can't be bothered.

Still waiting for T-mobile to expand solid 4G coverage in my area. When that happens I'm kissing verizon goodbye.

Re: Do any of these companies give a damn that there

I agree. All these plans are targeted at retention because the new sales tactic is to have so many people pool, that they can't realistically monitor or track usage and make it practically impossible for people to leave. It would take a PhD to figure out when to get in/out of a plan like that. Most people are too afraid to even try. I think that model would only make sense in prepaid where people could exit/enter at a whim and the risk is limited.

These plans give you just enough room to hang yourself because they are at the level where video streaming is encouraged to lead to overages. If you delete video, no way you could use 10GB per person even if heavily streaming music... The kid says "I have 10GB"..Holy batman. Let me stream youtube all day.

Now interestingly enough Cricket (AT&T) you can get 10GB for $55 (if you prepay) and no taxes... which also includes lots of international goodies and it's LTE or HSPA. You can BYOD or buy one of theirs.

I think that price is entirely reasonable and if you add more people, you get more discount. Right now my family is spread across 4 different prepaid (H20, cricket, Ringplus, PPC). If one could unify them that could be substantial savings. I can't see how a person couldn't get by on 10GB unless they are streaming video like crazy, and that really isn't a necessity for that low of a price.

You should see my 13 year old (who streams anime music on YouTube all day since it isn't anywhere else). She can rack up 15-35GB per month using YouTube as a jukebox. Could easily be fixed by doing just audio only.

2 gigs is enough for me

I usually get the low data warning text 2 days before my bill cycle closing date. And that is despite not using public Wi-Fi.

My smartphone usage is mostly web surfing, e-mail, and Facebook.

You say that now, but do you realize if you or anyone else had a much bigger allotment (or no caps at all in a perfect tense) their usage patterns could change due to more freedom?

Caps should never be an "enough" situation. Not attacking you, just speaking generally.

I have unlimited data with Verizon. I use what I use. One month it could be 2GB. The next month it could be 10GB, then the next could be 3GB. I use whatever data I use. I don't go out of my way to use any more or any less data. It just depends on what I'm doing in my personal life and at work as to how much data I use each month.

I used 3gbs just browsing on Google Chrome this month... I easily blow past 6gbs per month. This change in plans saved my family $20 a month and ADDED 10gbs. I'm happy as a lark after seeing this article.

scam of SCARcity

the average cell tower is never overloaded.. or see peak usage go near what the capacity actually is because of the high prices for data.

so what they are no longer trying to charge you $10 per gigabyte. metered buckets still discourage the primary reasons for having a really expensive handset in the first place..

Re: scam of SCARcity

Actually, wholesale data is pretty cheap. They just make it seem like its so precious.

For example, the Verizon and sprint tower (co-located), are served by a 100mbps CHARTER COMMUNICATIONS fiber feed. I can have a business account of the same type at my house with no caps for $120 a month. I'm sure Verizon and sprint don't pay much more than that for their connection, then use it for their mobile network.
