Verizon Offers More FiOS Bundle Options
Add More Speed, or More Channels For $5-$10 More

Verizon this morning announced that the company is offering FiOS customers several new options, increasing the ability to pick and choose bundle components. Previously, FiOS customers were offered three FiOS service levels, varying depending on the connection speed and the number of TV channels. Now, Verizon says they're allowing users to mix and match -- for "just $5 to $10 a month." A family happy with 15 Mbps as part of their bundle but who want additional TV channels can pay $5 for 324 channels (80 in HD) or $10 for 391 channels, (100 in HD.)

"The existing bundles have kept many customers completely satisfied and they will still be in place – priced at $99.99, $114.99 and $129.99 as before," Verizon's Bob Elek tells Broadband Reports. "However, going forward, if you want to juice up one bundle with more Internet speed but keep everything else as it is, you can just by adding $5 per month more to the base price," he says. "If more TV is important to you, no problem – an additional $10 per month adds more channels to your bundle. And if you prefer to take a step back, that will be possible too."

For example. if you're n the $99 bundle option and want to bump your 15 Mbps speed to 25 Mbps, you pay $5 more a month. If you want to bump your 15 Mbps speed to symmetrical 35 Mbps, you'll pay an additional $10 per month. The end of the release suggests this pricing is for new customers, and we're trying to confirm whether or not existing customers are excluded.

Update: Verizon's Bob Elek gave us this additional information for existing users hoping to take advantage of the new pricing:

quote:
Existing customers coming off of contract can take advantage of this, yes. Their base triple play bundle goes from $99.99 to $109.99…but they can juice up or drop back as they wish. Pricing is adjusted accordingly throughout…and month-to-month customers can do so at any time and the same applies to them.
Elek also notes that you can save $10 if you order a bundle online, up from the $5 online ordering discount they used to offer.

Its interesting to know that DC is probably the only place in the country with 4 TV Providers.

Satelite, Comcast, RCN, and FIOS.

Some buildings are wired with RCN - Others with Comcast.

My building isn't served by RCN... But hopefully Fios drops in or at least makes Comcast more competitive.

Shelby TWP (48315), MI = WoW, Comcast, uVerse,
---------------------------- Dish Network, DirecTV,
plus the 2 Canadian providers "Bell TV" & "Shaw Direct",
plus various Free-to-Air & C-Band/Ka-band/Ku-band choices.

Similar scenario in Warren &/or Center Line (48015), MI.

I lived in DC & environs 1993-1997;
had 2 cable & Dish/DirecTV all over.

With FIOS added, that now makes 5 choices, plus 2 Canadian!

Plus all that "illegal" streaming. Heh heh.

Dish and DirecTV are available essentially everywhere, so it's not like it's all that big of a deal. Bell TV and Shaw Direct are not legally offered to be sold to US customers. The only way to get them is to go through a broker or otherwise lie that you live in Canada. Not exactly an option for most people.

you won't have fios in michigan because it has to be a verizon area. Just like I won't have fios or uvers because I have REARTIER as a service provider.

BTW, your techincally not allowed to BUY Canadian programming in the USA or USA programming in Canada, but there are grey and black market ways which are illegal. I think they should change that.. if they have willing customers, why not? The content of many countries already leaks like a fiber webbed sive throughout the world.

Here in my little pocket of North Watauga TX I can get: Uverse, Dish, DirecTV, Charter, and FIOS.

Pricing and quality is not surprisingly reasonable.

Well... everywhere in the country has Satellite. Most places in the country have cable TV. Very few places in DC have FIOS right now. In uhh... 7 years it might be everywhere I can't get RCN, so IPPlanMan is probably right it's most likely a monopoly depending on location.

On the bright side, we have an above average selection of free over-the-air TV, which is what I use.

Well, since Verizon pulled out of this state Comcast has made a killing here. Nice of them to leave and offer these options elsewhere.

I wish POTS had a sunset order

Verizon does not seem to want to upgrade the Springfield, MA area to FiOS, despite being a profitable, densely populated urban area. I don't even have a landline anymore, which is why Verizon is losing customers in areas that have not been upgraded. If Verizon were to deploy FiOS here, I'd sign up the first day. Lynn, MA (which is similar to Springfield) has been upgraded to FiOS. I talk to Verizon techs that I come across and they worry about job security because the area is losing landline customers, which for means less profit. If it were up to me, I would definitely upgrade the urban parts of Western Mass to FiOS like Springfield, Chicopee, Holyoke, Westfield, Northampton, and Amherst.

Now would even be a better time to upgrade Springfield to FiOS because we had a tornado come through the city last week which meant that a good chunk of the POTS system was destroyed and has to be rebuilt so instead of rebuilding the system with outdated technology (copper), they should just rebuild it with fiber instead (which makes more economic sense considering that they are going to have to deploy next generation fiber eventually, because POTS is going to eventually reach end-of-life).

Re: I wish POTS had a sunset order

Verizon's cellphone network more than makes up for the lost land-line customers. They make plenty of profit off DSL, and besides the investment costs of upgrading to Fios they would have to compete on pricing with cable.

As bandwidth caps become standard, fiber to the home becomes obsolete. And the more antiquated the network becomes the more money Verizon gets from the government for backbone upgrades. But anything more than crippled internet is wasteful and irresponsible, because only child pornographers and pirates use more than 200MB/day.

Yes, it's much easier to throw a completely incompatible system in to replace part of a damaged buildout.

I agree there's probably a lot of repair work to be done after a tornado, but it's likely much easier logistically and technically to just replace what was there with new equipment and lines, rather than stripping the rest of the good equipment out to replace with fiber. Considering the bulk of the cost of switching to fiber would be trenching the cable, what they would be replacing for FTTH (buried copper) is probably still completely functional.

Median and average household income in Lynn is 25% higher than Springfield. They are doing more affluent areas first that they believe are more likely to signup/buy premium packages.

wait till your first year is up and you get hit with all the charges. Mine went up 50 bucks at the end of the first year and there is little I can do about it. You wont be saying the price is good 11 months from now.

yes I see. I too was locked in.. and that means I only pay 50 bucks a month more now.. good luck... as in 11 months you will be calling them too when all of the "good guy" and other discounts end. My base rate did not change but all the other discounts ended... according to them.

FiOS NOT in NJ

I can't wait for FiOS to hit the Comcast Garden State Cable franchise. That is, once the local politicians stop taking bribes to keep out FiOS. Because we are stuck in a monopoly, Comcrap is dragging their heels in upgrading our service. Amazing how I still get pixelation and freezing on my cable service and I pay top dollar. I bet Comcast will at least 30% of cable customers IF Fios every gets installed in our area. No wonder they are basically paying off local municipalities to block FiOS franchises.

FiOS certainly is in New Jersey.

But Verizon ITSELF has chosen to ignore some municipalities, just as they have ignored Baltimore City, Maryland, and Buffalo, New York.

This is a VERIZON issue, don't make it into a New Jersey issue.

Verizon FiOS hooked up a good chunk of Marlboro Township, NJ (Monmouth County) but then just walked away from the rest of the town.

There are many similar examples.

Verizon has HALTED the further expansion of FiOS at this time.

With the latest governor, NJ might take the top spot away from Illinois as the most corrupt state in the union. It boggles the mind on how non-transparent government operations have been since he took office. Remind you of our former president?

Re: FiOS NOT in NJ

Had you read my comment, I said "Garden State Cable franchise"; this doesn't refer to the entire state, only a small area in South Jersey such as parts of Cherry Hill, Mount Laurel, and Moorestown, where home prices and incomes are higher and most of us living in this area can afford FiOS, should the local governments stop taking "payouts" from CC and grant franchises to Verizon.

Yes, it's a Verizon issue because they probably could work harder at getting franchises granted. I can't speak for Northern Jersey for down here, the municipalities are blocking Verizon at the request of CC.

Re: FiOS NOT in NJ

OK, thanks, but your title was "FiOS NOT in NJ".

And by the way---

---Governor Corzine signed a law in 2006 granting Verizon a STATEWIDE franchise for FiOS.

It's not a town issue.

Actually, it was Cablevision in metro NY who fired the first shot.. this is Verizon's response.

That's the same thing I was wondering. Cause if that's the case FIOS would take the lead against cablevison for the fastest in New York

I think I still hear of this currently.

For example:
»[Billing] Horribly Bad Billing

There is a lot out there all the time.

I would agree that it used to be even worse. That doesn't exactly make Verizon worthy of praise, that it used to be even worse!

As long as your getting Digital Voice instead of POTS, which they still sell.. your billing price should be relatively FIXED eash month. Though, how it goes up & down a few cents each month can boggle the mind (billing system must have daydreams of being a metered service).. since I complained about it.. my bill has been fixed, same price 3 months in a row. I haven't heard people complain about billing for most of this year. They're not going out of their way to throw away customers like in 2003-2007; so cablevision & time warner should be worried.

Ok why would comcast be scared, i have had comcast for years and have had no serious issues. The internet is reasonably priced and the speeds are respectable. I think that the idea of FIOS or to a point Uverse driving prices down is overplayed. I live in Western Mass and i have a uncle ho has FIOS in framingham once his promotion expried he is paying 10-15% more than i am for comcast for relatively the same services. What you will see is once verizon gets the install base they want the prices will jump, i have been relatively happy with my services but all the providers do it and its just a game we have to deal with

Yeh Comcast could careless. They will just squeeze Verizon for money when they need to renegotiate their NBC contract. Comcast will compete in that area and raise prices in another area to make up for it.
