Verizon Offers New FiOS Home Support Tool
New 'In Home Agent' simplifies some basic troubleshooting...
by Karl Bode Tuesday 25-Aug-2009 tags: business · Verizon FiOS
As many FiOS customers will tell you, Verizon's fiber to the home service is blisteringly fast and technically sound, but often suffers from support and billing problems. As part of their continuing effort to try and resolve this, Verizon tells us they're overhauling some online support functionality, with a new online tool that "leverages the Verizon in-home network and the advanced FiOS platform to automate help and problem solving issues without a phone call," Verizon's James Smith tells us.

Click for full size
"The new Verizon In-Home Agent uses the same back office automation and help scripts a live representative uses to assist customers," says James.

"The broadband home router is a managed device, allowing us to use it to make adjustments to network configuration, PC configuration, service profiles ectcetera -- on devices attached to it -- including the PC and set-top boxes," he adds.

Verizon's added a YouTube video demonstration for those who are interested.

While the new system won't fix those phantom Verizon FiOS billing problems many Verizon users experience, it should help less technical customers resolve some fairly basic issues (setting up Wi-Fi, e-mail or home voice mail, resetting set-top boxes, reconfiguring or restarting routers) without having to wait through a phone queue. Verizon customers who give the new system a try should drop us a line and let us know how it works.

Never Again.

The last thing I want is Verizon mucking with my PC configuration. The last time they installed something on my machine I had to spend several hours fixing all the problems they caused. Never again.

Probably a good idea for most people to not let the utility software mess with your PC. Potential for messing up the system is high.

Re: Never Again.

If this is not a wake up call to get a separate router to face the internet and HANG the verizon router behind it . I don't know what is

Scary! I have DD-WRT now installed on a spare Actiontec router and it's about to become my edge router.

i do not want them coming in thru my edge router into my machines!!!! my finances and tax records are on some of those boxes.

HELL NO!

So does Comcast. These don't improve support, they are intended to deflect support calls. That's not bad, either, but what I'm afraid of is Verizon bad record in the area of BSS and this being just another vector.

Ugh! because it's just an emotional gut reaction. It could turn out okay. But this is Verizon and while everything they touch in OSS turns to gold, everything they touch in BSS turns to crap.

Router behind theirs!

I used to use a Netgear router behind the FIOS Actiontec for exactly this reason. Now unfortunately it broke, so I am connected to the AT again. Can they make changes to your PC without you knowing? I would suspect you would need to allow them access in some way.

I tried it

I tried it. Here's how it went:

My connection was slower then expected and the agent said it could help correct the issue. I waited a few minutes and the agent program just closed. I opened it back up and got a different agent that apologized profusely about the previous agent closing the window but there wasn't any record of a previous session. It said it would still help me and that if the connection was lost, it would reopen itself right away. It opened up my display properties before seemingly locking up then closing itself too. It never called me back reopened itself. I opened up the program a third time but it seemed to lag for about 45 minutes before responding to me. It said that it was the wrong agent and immediately sent me to the FiOS TV virtual agent even though I was having an internet problem. That agent transferred me to business phone support who tried to transfer me too but ended up closing the window. I eventually gave up. My next bill though had a new phone line added, a Texas regulatory fee (I'm in Indiana), and now my FiOS DVR doesn't work.

Yup. It works just like phone support.

Re: I tried it

I've had Fios since August 13th. The one thing I'm dreading is the bill. I hope they get it right.

I have to say, my experiences with Verizon DSL and Verizon Wireless have been pretty much hassle free. My wireless bill is always dead on, and pretty consistent from month to month. My phone/DSL bill was never an issue.

I still think your mileage with Verizon is incumbent on what Baby Bell you were part of before the break up and re merging of some of these companies.

I am in former Bell Atlantic territory and I've always been happy with my services. I was a little miffed when they wanted a $400 deposit for Fios, and then found out it was because my latest payment was something like 2 days late and it sent up a flag.

Waiting with fingers crossed for my first Fios bill....

Re: I tried it

Dont worry about. I have received my first 2 bills and both have been on point and in the price range they should have been. I just believe people just need something negative to say about such a good service. Maybe they had billing issues in the past but my bill were both easy to read and correct. The first one was about 20 buck higher than the second one due to pro-rations and such. But the 2nd bill was right on point. I can't wait to get my netbook.

Did you need to grant it access to your display properties? I would imagine/hope so!

fiostv and fiosnet

i wonder why verizon just doesnt have a help center right there at the place of business like time warner cable does, because you can call time warner cable directly and they patch you in and help you and can send a cable guy over anytime to help fix and resolve the matter in question.but usually, you can go down to time warner cable and switch out the cable modem and highdef setop box for a new one if your having problems.then after you hook up your cable broadband wired or wireless modem and then you have to connect the site that the modem brand name is made from and then use the numbers on the modem to register it,but any problems and you call time warner cable and they guide you through it all within the matter of minutes.

FIOS Billing

I had Fios and the service itself was pretty good although the router is crap. I had to replace three of them and six, yes six HD DVR Set-top boxes. The straw that broke this camels back was billing. I was double billed for $200 and after hours of phone time to fix it, it came back around to bite me again. I paid the bill to avoid the collections route but I will never have anythign Verizon again as a result. I even cancelled my VZ Wireless. I'm glad I'm out. I would rather have dial-up than Verizon. You will all eventually have the same issues, I promise.

Re: FIOS Billing

Every bill has additional charges that should not be there.
They take them off over a 3 month period, however.
I'm moving to Comcast or Dish.

Initial install FREE? but billed $110 fee. Took 2 months to credit.
Phone stopped working, no dial tone in house, no dial tone at box outside house. FIX FREE? but billed $91 labor charges for tech call to add a new box, splice wire that was chaffed (during install). Transferred to 3 'superviors' and went thru entire story. They claimed the Tech entered my house!!!OMG

Blew through 3 WiFiRouters so far. Afraid my home's electricity is the problem so added a surge protector, so far so good 2 months now.

Yes, service is great. Customer service is much friendlier than offshore RCN morons. Fight about the monthly promised price for 2 years EVERY MONTH as they keep forgetting to credit me $10 to get to the $99.99 Freedom Package bundle TV, ISP, Phone unlimited local/long distance.

Re: Problems? - I installed it, and it actually works.

Fastibook, I hear you.
I've had FiOS (triple play) since Dec '07, and until last week had no problems at all. In all of that time, I haven't wasted a single minute calling their support line. Oh, and my bills have always been correct. So take this with a grain of salt because I have no axe to grind.

I have to give them credit. This is the first provider software I've seen that actually does something interesting. It fixes problems that are outside of my home.

Ok, so last week my DVR suddenly got stupid and wouldn't show some of my premium channels. All of my other boxes were fine. I did the standard routine that I would run through every other week before calling ***crap when I used them for cable service.

Coax tight - check
Unplugged the box to restart it - check

No joy...

For a second, it looked like I was going to have to make my first call to support. However, I had downloaded this program from the verizon forums a few weeks ago to check it out. Most of the "help" in this application is too basic to be of any use for me; but I remembered that there was this one area that showed my actual boxes, and a link called "auto-fix". This is probably the only reason that I didn't uninstall it.

So I fired up this program and clicked on the automatic fix for set top boxes. Then I picked my DVR. It did something, and a few seconds later my DVR reset. At first I thought I had just wasted my time repeating what I'd already done; but lo and behold, when it came back up, everything was working. So the streak is intact. In almost two years, my only contact with verizon has been when my paper bill arrives in the mail.

This program actually works. If I hadn't installed it, I'd probably still be on hold waiting for a rep now. (Since I haven't called, I have no idea how long it really takes to get through to support for FiOS; but that's how I feel when I call any company for support.)

So let the beating begin. I think they are on to something here, and I am going to keep this installed. My machine isn't screwed up, and this program only runs when I run it. I don't know what I might need to do with them next; but if they have a way for me to do it without picking up my phone, and it is in this application, I'm going to give it a try. Whether this turns out to be helpful in other ways is up to them I guess.

Now, where did I put that body armour?

Not on my computer

I never let isp software touch my computer.... the damn stuff is malware, and in most cases it creates a backdoor into your system, besides also screwing things up at the same time.

Oh yeah, it's another one of those LAZY programs that requires .NET to run. You get to download more crap to your computer that you won't use, and takes up more hdd space! Yay!

if you Verizon , they will end up making you hate linux as you curse them for hanging up on you this time in a virtual connection box. they could make history in making the fist malware for linux by a "professional" hack org.

Re: Linux and Mac support?

It would take a lot more than that to get me to hate Linux. I've been using Linux since it first became available many years ago. I'm also competent enough to not need this sort of support tool, so I guess it doesn't really matter. I'd love a Linux version of Media Manager though. Of course, even the Windows version of that is a piece of crap.
