Verizon Offers Six Months Free DSL Promo To help counter the company's continued DSL losses Verizon suffered from quite a bloody third quarter when it came to DSL numbers, the company losing 135,000 DSL customers -- and only a portion of those having upgraded to the company's FiOS service. To help counter these DSL losses Verizon keeps tinkering with their DSL promotions, and yesterday rolled out a new one. According to a Verizon press release, new Verizon 1 Mbps, 3 Mbps or 7 Mbps DSL customers can get service free for six months if they're willing to sign a one year contract with the company. FiOS customers should note the company has also slightly tweaked their FiOS promotions depending on where you live.

I live in a college town, and in August, suddenly my connection was not usable anymore, and of course they do nothing to increase capacity. I have not had any trouble with Comcast and 16mbps sure beats 3mbps.

My connection got worse over past few months and annoying the hell out of me, I pay for 7MB and only get 4M/500k, that is relatively slow, but acceptable if connection was rock solid. | | Telcos are their own worst enemy The reason telcos are losing DSL customers has less to do with cable and more to do with the telcos themselves.
First, they still try to make you take a landline. Sure, you can order naked DSL, depending on the telco, but many seem to include it as an afterthought, as if everyone out there has a landline or wants one.
Next, they push contracts. Few cable companies do this.
Third, there are many areas that simply can't get DSL. If this were still 2001, I could understand that, but this is 2009, and there are many areas here--upscale areas--that simply can't get it, and AT&T isn't doing a damn thing about it. It's as if they just decided to stop expanding service around 2002 and never started again. Hell, there are some parts of the area that got U-verse last year, but most places still can't, despite the equipment already being in place.
The telcos seem to have the attitude that they'll offer what they want when they want, and consumers had better be grateful to have it, yet they wonder why no one is buying.

Hell, there are some parts of the area that got U-verse last year, but most places still can't, despite the equipment already being in place. Okay, first you have to understand that DSL is an ageing almost obsolete technology. DSL relies on good Copper and that is more expensive these days. AT&T went with U-Verse that would use the existing Copper Infrastructure, which I feel was a mistake, and now AT&T is finding out the existing Copper is getting older in need of replacement. I think AT&T is thinking now that Fiber is the answer, but to turn a Big Ship like AT&T takes a lot of Time and Money!
| | | | | Re: Telcos are their own worst enemy Don't get me wrong, I agree with you completely, but, back in 2002, BellSouth was still an independent telco, and I wasn't hearing of them doing FTTP or any sort of TV service besides a very limited rollout in Atlanta, I think. Still, DSL expansion ground to a halt, and that was that. A couple of years ago, when I was in the local AT&T store, they were desperately trying to get me to buy a landline and DSL, which I wasn't really interested in, but I went along and let them check, just to shut them up. Turns out there were no available ports in my CO, so I couldn't have gotten it even if I'd wanted to.
It's like they aren't even trying.

| | | I left Verizon DSL and went to Comcast HSI instead of FIOS I left Verizon DSL and went with Comcast HSI just about a month ago. I had always dreamed of getting FIOS and FIOS was available but I decided to go with Comcast in the end because of Comcast's self-install option versus taking a day off from work and suffer through a possibly long and intrusive FIOS installation. In addition, I like the ease of using any router you want with Comcast HSI.
Also, I decided to stick with Comcast cable TV over going with FIOS TV because of the same installation reasons as above and because Comcast is better for those with lots of legacy analog equipment (SD Tivo, VCRs, HD/DVD recorders, PC analog TV tuners) that we don't want to throw out just yet. Comcast still provides some channels in analog and provides 2 free DTAs and an SD set-top box for no cost for those coming from basic analog.
| | | | Re: I left Verizon DSL and went to Comcast HSI instead of FIOS Why couldn't you use your own router with FiOS? If their router is doing NAT, can't you just turn NAT off (or have them do it) and let it pass the public IP through to a router you install? | |

| | I didn't leave DSL, DSL left me DSL offered me:
1. Flakey service (due to squirrels gnawing on lines in the neighborhood). I live about a mile from the Pentagon, so it's not like I'm in the sticks. 2. Appointments that don't have windows. You get to take an entire day off work. No weekend appointments. 3. Appointment no shows. Happened to me twice. 4. Customer service about as bad as it gets.
Verizon has abandoned it's copper infrastructure that the tax payer funded. Is it any wonder the customer is abandoning Verizon?
| | | | Re: I didn't leave DSL, DSL left me Except for the part about the squirrels, that sounds exactly like a recent experience I had with Alagasco. Called to get my gas connected for the winter, they set up an appointment for two days later, but they don't do time windows shorter than 7 a.m.-5 p.m. This meant I had to take off from work all day, and they never came. Called in just before closing time, and they had no record of the order. I was very nice to the rep, but I let her know I was not at all happy. She then said she could set me up for the next available day, to which I said NO, I couldn't keep taking annual leave to have my gas turned on. After several times on hold, she finally got someone to come out that evening to do it. Then, almost two weeks later, guess who shows up: a guy from Alagasco with an order to turn on my gas. Unbelievable!
I don't think it's so much a telco thing as a monopoly utility thing.
