Verizon Offers Skype Via Smartphone
Though as usual with Verizon, the devil is in the details...
by Karl Bode Tuesday 16-Feb-2010 tags: business · wireless
As everyone had guessed last week as soon as the press conference was announced, Skype and Verizon have announced that Verizon will be allowing Skype to work on all Verizon 3G-enabled smartphones. According to a Verizon press release, the new new Skype mobile product was cooked up in collaboration with Skype, and will drop next month. According to Verizon, here's the list of smartphones the service will work on:

Initially, Skype mobile will be available on millions of best-selling Verizon Wireless 3G smartphones with data plans, including the BlackBerry Storm 9530, Storm2 9550, Curve 8330, Curve 8530, 8830 World Edition and Tour 9630 smartphones, as well as DROID by Motorola, DROID ERIS by HTC and Motorola DEVOUR.

After trying so hard to fight of the inevitable evolution of open wireless networks, Verizon executives finally realized they were fighting a losing battle -- and so will make charging more money for wireless data their primary focus moving forward. Who needs wireless voice or SMS revenues when you can require that everyone pay for a monthly data plan? Especially when those users are given the "choice" of either paying an extreme premium by the megabyte (20 cents per MB over 25 MB per month), or signing up for a more expensive "unlimited" (actually 5GB) plan?

Any Abramson over at VoIP Watch has a little more detail we've not seen elsewhere (he's in Barcelona where the announcement was made). Abramson notes that Verizon is using circuit switched voice and not 3G to kick off this little endeavor. He also notes that interestingly enough -- Wi-Fi is not supported by this initial release. Meanwhile according to the Associated Press, minutes will be deducted to use the service when calling U.S. numbers.

There's some fine print in this deal many outlets are missing as they trip over themselves to proclaim Verizon has fully embraced openness. Still: baby steps, right?

.

None of this matters unless Verizon allows us to drop voice altogether, or at least give better tiers. I use 15-30 minutes of my 700 plan a month.

why not downgrade to a 450 minute plan?

Family share. The other phone uses less than 10 a month.

Re: .

I am in the same boat. I was on a 700 minute family plan and was going over arounf 100 minutes a month. I moved to the next tier, 1400 minutes, and because of the friends and family numbers I only use about 200 minutes now.

They really have people bent over these days..

Verizon should go into the elevator business!

Verizon should go into the elevator business since they tend to give their customers the shaft. They seem to be one of the worse companies in coming out with weaselly schemes in order to shake down their customers. I wonder how much money Verizon spent paying off lobbying lawmakers to turn their backs on such abuse of their customers by forcing customers to buy something that they do not want/need.

Re: Verizon should go into the elevator business!

Are you referring to the required data plans for the multimedia phones? There are currently 16 VZ phones that don't require a data plan. Don't like it, don't purchase a phone the requires a data plan. Perhaps you're referring to a different "shake down"?

This is getting to be the lamest bullshit excuse there is next to move closer so you can get internet. Get off the bullshit, for a change. Get some new excuses will you.

What excuse? I have a family plan with VZ and don't have a data or text plan. Works very well making voice calls. No excuses, just a happy VZ customer for five years and counting.

Circuit switched ?

While this will help out for quality, what does this mean for consumers?

EVDO --> CS call ? Will it be billed ?

Currently I use Skype over WiFi because its essentially free, and all WinMo devices support Skype anyways.

Re: Circuit switched ?

Cool.
I've tried Skype on WinMo (HTC Tilt), and the WiFi was choppy - didn't have 3G data on it (didn't bother).

On the iPhone, I've been using Skype for the past 2 months - I probably run ~5000 minutes/month (work) on it over WiFi.

Re: Circuit switched ?

As far as the 3g on Skype on my Verizon Samsung Omnia, it was really solid. Chatted with my Irish friend for a few hours while i drove the I-26 from SC to TN, and it was clear even in the mountains.

I really wish VZ would ditch the 5gb cap. I'd be willing to pay more.

Why Folks Are Complaining

The real issue that folks such as those at VoIP Watch have with VZW's approach to Skype Mobile is that - I mean, let's get real - do you honestly expect that ANY voice provider is going to let you end-run their billing system with impunity? (Skype Mobile isn't just used to make wireless-to-PC calls, any more than the original Skype is used for PC-PC calling only.) VZW (or any other primarily-voice wireless provider) expects to sell primarily voice services (that is, after all, what the network was built for), just as the original AT&T (AKA the Bell System) was built to provide universal voice services. In both cases, data services was an afterthought or secondary service. What Skype Mobile (like the original Skype) does is convert voice to data, ostensibly to take advantage of lower rates for data traffic (compared to voice traffic). However, VZW (unlike the original VZ) is not taking this end-run lying down - unlike the original AT&T (or even Bell Atlantic/NYNEX pre-VZ), they are adjusting their data rates north to compensate for the end-run that services like Skype Mobile (and Vonage Mobile) are doing to their voice billing system (while simultaneously reducing the prices for voice services that sparked the interest in the end run in the first place; note that at the same time that data rate pricing has increased, unlimited voice rates have dropped). As to the lack of Wi-Fi support for Skype Mobile (despite the number of Wi-Fi-supporting 3G smartphones, such as the Storm 2 9550 and Tour), again, let's get real - how many of you would shift mostly, if not *entirely*, to Skype Mobile if it supported Wi-Fi?

Lastly, a reminder - I am not an employee of VZ, VZW, or even Vodaphone (I'm a VZW customer from a family of such customers) and I have nothing against Skype (I have Skype installed on my PC), and have used various form of Internet telephony (back to the original VocalTec Internet Phone) for over a decade. However, I also stayed awake in Business 101; therefore, I have no expectation that VZW would let their network be raped with impunity.

Anyways, Skype is steering away, temporarily at least. This link goes in case anyone has not read those news yet.

Yes, according to Skype, the move does not allow current users of Skype Lite or Skype for WMo

oh_really

@uk.net

Yawn?

The UK network I use has embraced Skype for years now, to the point where you can get a free SIM, never have to top it up (its prepay), and are able to use as much Skype as you like.

It also doesn't use the data network to carry the calls - data is used for telemetry and chat, the voice is circuit-switched to a Skype gateway owned by the network.

I suppose that's what you get when you have real competition.
