Telco looks outside of telcoland for new innovative ideas...

As we recently noted, Verizon is adding a series of widgets they promise will bring new functionality (including Twitter and Facebook) to FiOSTV customers. Verizon has also told us that Veoh, blip.tv, and Dailymotion video content will be coming to the "widget store" soon, and now the company says they're opening up the widget-bazaar to third party developers. As the company is doing with their looming wireless application store, Verizon is giving developers for the bazaar access to Verizon APIs and backend billing functionality. Whether any of this produces any "widgets" you'll actually want to use? Stay tuned.

Does anyone use widgets?

Seriously -- I think the Verizon tech showed me the weather widget when he installed FiOS, and I've never used it or any other widget since.

I don't use widgets but several people I know use them pretty heavily.

I already hate the little network logos they put on the screen in the bottom right hand corner. What I don't need is more useless nonsense blocking the view of the TV show onscreen.

Maybe someone can write a widget that erases the network logo in the corner. Now that would be a widget worth having.

Verizon nor any other cable or satellite company doesn't put network logos on the corner of the screen. Networks themselves embed them. Its their way of reminding you what channel you're watching .

I vote for a widget to block the Fox News Channel "Stinger".

I remember back in 2001, whenever I heard that noise, I thought for sure something blew up.

Now they use it all morning long on the Saturday business block they run.

ZZZZZZZZZZZDING! This is a Fox News Alert, Brenda Buttner has nice cans!!!

On a TAPED show!!!

The network logos are actually called "bugs". They used to be fairly small and inoffensive, however they now take up a quarter of the screen and are animated. Its a fitting name really, because they 'bug' the hell out of me!

Re: Does anyone use widgets?

Called "bugs" because they are like the bugs on the windshield!

Annoying. Distracting. And now, getting BIGGER, and animated.
(you know, you are watching a show and this actress walks out, does a 360 with her hair flowing and crosses her arms. EFF YOU Missus Bacon!)

Back to the matter at hand, no, I use widgets on my computer. Briefly and to the point. I do like the idea of a widget to show someone calling, or the weather, or if I have email or won that eBay bid. But other than that...whatever floats your boat.

But what I don't want and I am hearing it is coming, is the advertising IN the menus. Its pathetic enough that I have to watch some buxom brunette smile about Rosetta stone, and then some idiots rant about how great Direct Buy is, and then those awful "Billy Mays" pitched crapwares, or the numerous drug and "male enhancement" commercials...

I think I'm going Luddite and be happy. Bye!

Good Ideas?..

A semi-transparent stock ticker would be cool.

Caller ID.

Billing reminders past x days.

so that you know that you "FIOS" or maybe so that your friends that come over to watch a game or some crap can see that you have FIOS maybe i should shut up and not give then any ideas
