1 edit | Re: VZ and T Not on the Same Page said by meskinct :How is it that two telecommunications companies (VZ and T) can see things so differently? They both provide data, voice, wireless and now video. But when you ask each other what the future needs will be, they both tell a different story. It seems one wants to just survive today (T) and the other actually plans for the future (VZ). In the end, it all comes down to the CEO and board of directors. Verizon is taking the "short term loss, long term gain" route, which is, unfortunately, a rarity these days.
AT&T, on the other hand, is following the typical shortsighted mindset that pervades corporations these days. Hell, they can't even get more than 1 HD stream at a time working through "Pew-Verse". I was hoping that when old Eddie Whitacre stepped down, they'd bring in some new blood who understood that FTTP is the ONLY way to go for the future. Unfortunately, the new guy turned out to be just another one of Eddie's butt boys...
I'm stuck in AT&T land, with no hope of ever seeing FIOS...

| Re: VZ and T Not on the Same Page Another plus for VZ spending the extra "up front" money is that, barring disasters such as fiber seeking backhoes, rodents and errant diggers, fiber is much cheaper to maintain than copper, and has a lifespan of well over 30 years.
Money saved on maintenance costs can be counted as extra revenue, which in turn, if presented just right, can and should make stockholders very happy.
FIOS is being laid in my neighborhood now, and I cannot wait to get that 15Mbit package along with FIOSTV.

| Better Decision!
Yes! Verizon made the better decision for the long term and this will pay off for them in a big way as time passes. I suspect the other guys are really hurting themselves and their customers over the longer term by stumbling along on the cheap - sometimes, you get just what you pay for!
Just my 2 cents.

| I don't know about other cable companies but Comcasts HD VOD offering is pretty poor. I think they do that to force people to get or keep the HD DVR. They also have are pretty crappy about labeling shows right in the guide. I can't tell you how many times I have taped one thing and got something completely different. I think the only thing I have found in HD VOD are PPV movies. So...they want you to pay extra for the DVR(required by Comcast for HD) and pay an extra fee for HD content and they want you to PPV for your HD VOD. Give me a break!!! | |

If you have all the premiums then you have a ton of HD content on VOD. The only shortfall that I see is in the HBO area, there you can only get the Sopranos in HD. Starz and Showtime's offerings are great.
Also, you may need a new DVR box. I have no problems with getting the wrong thing, just the fact that HD content takes up so much room, I need a 3450 (or whatever a 500 GB Moto box would be).

| Re: cablecompanies Oh you need every channel? Oh I guess having them all unlocks some extra content. Well I have everything but Starz. So I guess I am SOL.
Nah even the network TV in HD selection is pretty poor. CBS in SD VOD has all their hits but CBS in HD VOD all you get is CSI.
No I don't need a new box. Comcast has always had the guide problem it is just more frequent on their HD channels.

quote: Fios on speed: Verizon is already in the process of upgrading its Fios network to a technology called GPON or gigabit passive optical network, which will quadruple the capacity of the network. Wegleitner said this upgrade should give the company enough capacity to satisfy customers' needs for at least another three to four years. After that, he said, the company is already testing new technologies, such as 10GPON and another called Wave Division Multiplexing or WDM, which splits the light on each fiber to provide one wavelength per household. The verdict is still out on which technology the company will use, but the ultimate goal is to eventually deliver 100 megabits per second to any device in the home.
Sp the technology to offer higher speeds is in the works.
