Verizon Plans Home Energy, Security Services For FiOS
Check your energy consumption via smartphone...
by Karl Bode Tuesday 22-Jun-2010 tags: alternatives · telco
We've been hearing that Verizon for a very long time has been eager to expand well beyond traditional FiOS voice and TV -- and into additional services that can be integrated with FiOS like home automation and home security. According to CNET such services will finally drop later this year, but there's no hard date or pricing details to be had as of yet. The goal is that everything's driven by remote servers (aka the "cloud") -- so that users can access a multitude of details from any Internet connected device. For example, users ideally could use their smartphone to manage home energy consumption and check your security cameras -- though there's a lot of specifics to see ironed out and implementation will be key.

How else do you think VARs and MSPs bill things?

And when the alarm goes off, they'll send a security officer sometime between 8am and 5pm next tuesday?

This is a waste, really anyone can have a programmed thermostat, which is web enabled. Another product from the phone company , i dont want. Bell South has been doing this for years. Yawn.. Double Yawn..

You can read about what happened when I agreed to get an internet thermostat from my electric company:

Can't you do this with any ISP?

Are any power companies thinking that you can put a wifi or wired device on the meter for realtime energy usage and send the data over the internet (over a secure vpn of course).

Incidentally our electric co-op delivers daily energy usage reports every month, but they do this with their current low speed data network that they use for AMR.

And probably...

An extra charge if the security gets activated; you pay $20 per trigger and they call the Police the next business day.

Only one line to cut to leave the family defenseless

Unless they have a gun.

Yea, I know. That's mostly how it is now.

However:
VZ ought to consider a CDMA backup; built into the alarm system.

Comcast already has this.

Comcast just released this.

We'll have to see how these two services compare once Verizon get's their offerings out there.

Without cellular backup, it has that single point of failure. What if the crook cuts the cable or fiber optic line prior to breaking in?

Sounds cool....

Sounds cool, but i worry, if you have all this VZ gear in your house, couldn't someone from vz collaborate or plan break ins with this or something?

I dunno, like i said, sounds cool, would need to know more specifics. Would be awesome if they made an iPhone app for it....

Alarm.com

Alarm.com (an Alarm cellular provider) has an Iphone app that allows full control of your alarm system, or you can login to their web site and do it as well If you have video surveillance you can also monitor it through the app and get a live feed, pretty cool stuff. It's cool that Verizon is making strides to do this as well.
