Verizon Plans Wi-Fi "Hot Zones"
To Offload Traffic From Mobile Network
by Karl Bode Monday 23-May-2011 tags: business · wireless · alternatives · consumers · wireless
In May of last year, AT&T launched a free (at least to AT&T customers) Wi-Fi "hot zone" in New York City's Times Square, in order to help take some of the heat off of their 3G network in the area. After tests found the offloading quite useful in relieving network strain, AT&T expanded the project to include free Wi-Fi in Charlotte, North Carolina, and Chicago. Verizon now says they'll be following AT&T's lead and launching their own hot zones in high-traffic locations such as hotels, stadiums and college campuses. There's still no announcement about locations or scale, though the service should arrive for both EVDO and LTE customers sometime this year.

About time.

There are a lot of ATT WiFi spots in my area. I hardly use my data plan.

WiFi hot zones data only; but should do voice if smart

Verizon, like AT&T, will use these hotspots just to handle data. It is too bad that they don't use a technology like T-mobile does to allow routing of voice over WiFi too. That would really allow them to reduce network congestion in areas where thousands congregate.

Wifi OFF

I leave my wifi almost always OFF, and I bet lots of users do it to save precious battery life on smartphones.

Re: Wifi OFF

I have noticed that my battery drains slower when I am connected to wifi, which actually makes sense.

Re: Wifi OFF

It depends. Wifi uses more at idle(where most users' phone are 90+% of the time), but I find it saves alot when pushing lots of data or in low signal spots. It's pretty logical. Wifi doesn't need nearly as much transmit power, but you end up running 2 radios when idle. Fortunately, I can turn on wifi in airplane mode, if I really want to save.

That would be great but...

the BB, they sold us on don't have Wifi. That's just me being angry our next phones which we vote on today will either be newer BB's which all have wifi or android based.

Re: That would be great but...

BBs have Wifi. If your BB doesn't you have an old Curve. the Curve 3500series was the first line to start coming out with the wifi and the BB storm2 has it as well. I had both from VZ and a Curve from Sprint that had WiFi as well.

I know they come with wifi and I was surprised to find this model did not, it is a 9630, no wifi, however the 9650 does.

Remember when Verizon would hobble the BB's on their network by disabling the WiFi?

Now they WANT you on that WALL WIFI, they NEED you on that WIFI.

catch-up..

Cablevision & Time Warner already have a large network of optimum/twc hotspots. The Verizon ones are very few & far between. Apparently they haven't been sponsoring alot of businesses to get FIOS and run a hotspot. There are thousands of cable company spots. Why not setup a few long major traffic routes they way the cable companies do? Not every penny of investment has to be spent on fiber cables...
