Verizon Prepaid Users to Get Access to LTE?
by Karl Bode 10:50AM Monday Jul 07 2014
Verizon appears prepared to finally offer the company's prepaid data users a taste of faster LTE connectivity. Historically Verizon has only allowed prepaid users to function on the company's older EVDO/CDMA network, reserving LTE for more expensive postpaid plans. But a source tells Droid Life that Verizon will be offering prepaid users access to LTE connectivity starting July 17. It's unclear if Verizon will be shaking up pricing with the shift, but it seems like we should get more details shortly.

Its about time

It's about time! Hopefully this might shake up the prepaid market (AT&T).

I would not jump for joy just yet...

This is Verizon we speak of I'm sure there will be some devil in the details. As an example ( just a guess) there LTE my only be available with the unlimited talk and text "All set plan" (or) there may be 2 all set plans "Unlimited talk and txt with 500mb on evdo/CDMA for $45" and "unlimited talk and text with 500mb on LTE (where available and carrier specified) for $50".

So what if LTE pre-paid is $5 more per month? The Allset plans you can have between 500 MB and 6.5 GB per month depending on your data needs. And some of that data can carry over for up to 3 months.

When will the MVNOs see it?

Really excited to hear this...but when will the MVNOs offer it? I can move a bunch of lines to StraightTalk that overuse my data each month...

Re: When will the MVNOs see it?

I wouldn't count on mvno's seeing it. Verizon has never been a particularly mvno friendly carrier, I expect them to continue to relegate their few mvno's pageplus for example to cdma only.

Net10 uses AT&T and has LTE.. Depending where I am located, I've seen 30Mbps down and 10Mbps up on my iPhone5.

Making Lemonaide out of Lemons

As Verizon (and others) migrate more of their network to LTE, they have to move the subscriber base to LTE. This just lets them charge for it. Same thing the cable/satcos did with HD channels.

Too late, I already switched.

Thank goodness my area has so many wireless providers that offer good coverage. When AT&T offered 10GB of data for $100 and only $15 per smart phone line I had to JUMP. At that time Verizon showed no signs of adjusting their prices. But I'm glad Verizon waited so long. After switching I found out AT&T has equal coverage, much faster data speeds, and much less expensive/unlocked phones available (OnePlus, Nexus...). AT&T has free visual voice mail, which Verizon charges $36 a year for.

Thank goodness I was able to vote with my wallet. I sure hope Comcast doesn't get more evil, I don't have another choice for home broadband.

Re: Too late, I already switched.

Yea, I jumped ship when they said I couldn't keep unlimited data and get subsidized phone upgrades. They cost too much and they nickel and dime you. Then I went to prepaid gsm, its much cheaper, they don't nickel and dime, I have vastly more smartphone choices and byod is extremely simple.
I'm currently on MetroPCS and love it.
I'd never go back to a CDMA carrier.

VZ would charge you 5¢ every time you reboot your damn phone if they knew they could get away with it.

A step in the direction of LTE Only

Between this and VoLTE (they are still working on VoLTE aren't they?) it is probably part of a multi year plan to be LTE only.

Re: A step in the direction of LTE Only

Yes eventually their 1x and 3g spectrum will be converted to LTE. So at some point they have to start moving people off of those frequencies. As of the end of quarter 1 2014 73% of the data on their network was over 4G anyway. That's up from 69% in 4th quarter 2013. Quarter 2 report will be out on the 22nd of this month.

What're they working on, exactly? Vendor bids? Picking a watered-down codec? It's well known calls on their CDMA sound like hot garbage -- do they actually plan to deliver a premium experience to subs by throwing a proper bitrate at HD voice? Or is Uncle Red going to gleefully accept 2nd place service behind magenta?

Re: A step in the direction of LTE Only

VoLTE requires a device that can actually do that. None of the devices that Verizon sells do so far. Second the line you are connecting must also be capable of VoLTE.

T-Mobile superior? Yeah come to my place an try using it. No T-Mobile for 40 miles. Plenty of Verizon signal though. Hell even Sprint is here.

If you can get here, obviously you can get to the Verizon Wireless website to get the number? Or go to a local Verizon store.

Ipad mini is 4G and can not be used on prepaid. At least not until the 17th if rumors are true. So far no 4G devices allowed on prepaid.

Does This Come with Tethering/ Mobile Hotspot Functionality?

AT&T's more pricey GoPhone plans ($45 and $60) come with tethering and mobile hotspot functionality. Anyone know if this is available through Verizon's prepaid plans?
