Bendable fiber should ease installations...

We were seeing Manhattan install pics from our users back in January, so it's interesting to see TheStreet.com tell its readers that the company is only just now pushing FiOS into Manhattan. About a fifth of Verizon customers live in multiple dwelling units (MDUs), and 2007 was supposed to be the year Verizon made a concerted push into these markets. Operations Chief Denny Strigl is saying the company "now has a plan" for Manhattan.

Apparently Verizon was just testing the waters with these early Manhattan installs, and has now formulated a plan to proceed. MDU Installs are trickier, though Corning's recent development of bendable fiber should help considerably. The last we heard, Verizon was also testing a newer and much smaller FiOS ONT (Optical Network Terminal) for single-family units that was supposed to be available by the end of this year or early 2008.

Fios nyc

Re: Oh god...

It took Verizon a long time to wire my building in nyc for Fios almost 7 months. THe install was back in May and the verizon installers did a great job. I was so happy to dump TWC. Now i am just waiting to get rid of the TWC cable.

Let's move it!

I'm looking forward to replacing my T1/SDSL infrastructure with FIOS. While I know it will be quite some time before it's available in commercial buildings, it will help alleviate the occasional bandwidth woes we face from time to time.

Wall Street

I wonder if this is a push to bump up thier stock. A lot of high profile brokers live in that area working for citigroup and the like. Does Verizon was a christmas present with their stock going up.

fios

Until a franchise agreement is signed with the city and Verizon can offer triple play to customers, its gonna be awhile before a big impact is made.

Re: fios

any one want to bet verizoncherry picks what buildings get fios and my guess would be unless the city forces verizon in the franchise to do low income and public housing those areas will be denied

Re: fios

quit your moaning, i'm betting it'll get deployed in areas where there is high demand for it (by high demand, i mean NOT one person moaning away like a little child begging FIOS). same thing goes for deploying FIOS on a grander scale. Why deploy FIOS in an area that is going to be cost even more (compared to other areas in general) when building the infrastructure is costly enough? believe or not, but Verizon is a public company that needs to make a profit to stay in business. if verizon goes (or nears) bankrupt, i doubt fiber deployment is going to be the last thing that goes.

You are incorrect. FIOS is currently available in many areas of Queens and the Bronx, both of which (generally) are lower income than Manhattan. They will likely roll the services out in Manhattan based on ease of deployment and cost per (potential) subscriber as the main driver. Even if they did "cherry pick", so what? The MDU rollouts are based on new, expensive technology (bendable fiber, VDSL2 extension, etc) and initially they want to make sure it works well before rolling it out to everyone. Clearly they will pick the first batch of buildings based on some criteria (whatever it may be), and they have every right to do so.

fios installer

@rr.com

Re: fios

As a fios installer for the las 2 years; low income residents provide more money!! while retention is a different story. Ask any fios or cable guy! You go to public housing and they want a dvr in every room with all the premiums!!! however you go to a mansion and all they want in basic. If you don't belive me me ask any cable guy

ScrewVerizon

LOL yup exactly. Verizon is just being stupid. Profit my ass. If that were the case, Cablevision, Time Warner and RCN would cherry pick too. Verizon is stupid. If they really want to put a dent on TWC and Cablevision, they have to deploy all areas NOT cherry pick the ones where they think they're gonna make the most profit.

Lot of those people in this upper scale neighborhoods dont even have Cable or a DBS Satellite! They're old farts still using a big a$$ C-band dish and they dont give a flying f*ck about Fios, Cable and DBS Satellite. They love their uncompressed, c-band signal.

FIOS

I am sure Verizon is probably close to an agreement with the city.

First Liberty Island now my FIOS.

I have been looking at FIOS 1/4 mile from my house for 10 months, it has not gotten any closer. Now I know why. I'm going to poop on the ice at Rockefeller Centre.

well

the more they deploy the cheaper it will cost to deploy. If they can put the service in place where they can add higher ROI then they can get the go ahead from the board and investors. With the cheaper deployment they can expand the service to places that may not initially been cost advantages to service. But i still wouldn't mind fios in my area.

With time warner here i am quoted 15 down 768 up so i guess i cant complain. Except when it drops down to half 512 down or 2 down during peak periods (after 9pm).

Good investment

This is a good investment. Many who live in Manhattan can well afford FIOS rates. This will force Time Warner to upgrade their internet speeds. 8 & 15 megabits won't do when 20/20 service becomes available.

Re: Good investment

Many people in Manhattan pay atleast 2k in rent these days, hell yeah I'd go for FiOS

I wouldn't mind TWC but they have been so unreliable at times.

Wonder when they'll be making there way up to the Bronx.

Wouldn't mind some competition with cablevision.

FIOS Installation Confirmed

www.onehanson.com

That's the building at Flatbush and Atlantic in brooklyn. They've currently got FIOS installers on every floor for when the buyers move in.

Of course they happen to be luxury condo buyers.
