Verizon Runs First Ad For LTE Network
Confirms launch in December of this year
by Karl Bode Monday 22-Nov-2010 tags: business · wireless · consumers
Verizon last night aired their first ever commercial for their upcoming LTE network during last night's Sunday Night Football. The Stephen Spielberg-esque ad ad features a lightning bolt delivered by snail mail, and confirms rumors that the network is "coming in December." As previously noted, Verizon's initial launch next month will be fairly significant, the 5-12 Mbps service covering 38 markets (roughly one third of the population) and 60 airports right out of the gate. We're still waiting on Verizon to reveal their pricing for the speedier service, which as of last week the company still claimed they weren't sure of.

If Verizon and T-Mobile ever merged would he have to hook up with Catherine Zeta-Jones? What would their child look like? Inquiring minds want to know.

Re: They even been showing verizon ipad ads

It does run off a mifi. I saw a special on the ipad with mifi on the vzw site some time ago. It wasn't cheap. I have a mifi for my lappy and as a backup for my dsl. It's a very nice unit. I sometimes use it on my AT&T phone where 3G is lacking for them, or to get more use by having it go against my mifi's larger 10GB cap.

It is iPad + MiFi... Not anywhere near cheap... 64GB iPad plus MiFi on a 2 yr contract is over $800 still

And most of that price has to be the ipad. The mifi was free with a 2 year contract in my case.

LTE Speeds

It always amazes me that the advertised speeds (5-12Mbps) are so far below what is actually being received so far.

16-29Mbps Down and 8-16Mbps Up are closer to what is being seen by some testers.

They don't want to promise/guarantee speeds the testers are getting, because when the crush of more customers hits the system, the speeds will surely drop.

Correctamundo. When the 4G droid and iPhones hit the network will be crushed to pieces.

Re: LTE Speeds

VZW with 700MHz 10+10 implementation will have 76Mbps down and 36Mbps up roughly counting in protocol over-head per sector. Most sectors in the US will have 6 in the most densely populated areas. So:
76*6=456Mbps down shared
36*4=144Mbps up shared

The cell sites will be built using a new IP-RAN with completely pure GigE or higher fiber back-haul on most urban sites. VZW won't have a problem promising those speeds to those users ALL THE TIME. Sure they can scale up to 76Mbit per user but then you have the EvDO problem of bandwidth carrier saturation. VZW with LTE wants wire-line like broadband quality in LTE.

Re: LTE Speeds

A tower sector really only has 76/5=15, 15 users on it? Come on. The moment anything other than an aircard hits the network, its going to be 1-2mbps. Like EVDO on a super day.

Alright! Faster speeds. More Verizon apps. More

reasons to use Verizon for more and more

Oh, and now laughably low caps so we can be forced to hit penalties

LTE should have higher caps. If not it's useless. cinsidering the first devices are USB dongles for coputers, what good is 5 GB a month? For a smartpohne, sure maybe 5 GB is alright. If I'm using LTE for an internet connection, hell no 5 GB isn't enough. I might hit that in a day or 2.

whats so much amusing about it?

For now HSPA+ will offer similar advantages in speed, even though LTE supposedly supports more users on spectrum or maybe even has lower latency.Because for most mobile internet uses it won't matter and desktop/ home laptop users waiting for a nice video game experience when they are left with no good wireline broadband options will hit caps.

T-Mobile launched it, ATT is launching it soon. ATT will lunch LTE after it.

Latency isn't only relevant to online gaming, it's a big part of VOIP. Stationary LTE service as a substitute for ye old copper presumably would have higher caps. (non-mobility enforced by a GPS chip inside the receiver, like what ATT did with their microcells)

Re: whats so much amusing about it?

Hard to imagine since telcos, especially wireless push circuit - switch and voice plan allowances with minutes for talk - still very profitable business. I don't see them going this direction now, maybe few years later. at best they'll do now is permit third party voip providers like we have now with skype or vonage (correct me if those applications don't use 3G data or wifi for calls).

vz techs and contractors will be installing LTE equipment on your house or a house near you. they want all fiber and all wireless. copper plant will continue to be sold to frontier. i know this because several verizon 1st level field supervisors in this region have been receiving pamphlets and handouts with the words "verizon/frontier" on them.

LTE phones? Pricing? Caps?

*yawns*

What's so great about LTE compared to T Mobiles HSPA+ that is upgradable to 42+mbps speeds?

Not to mention for LTE you NEED a phone that does LTE in the first place, which Verizon doesn't even have yet.

its all pure packet-switched, so as the result you get lower latency and some other great perks that cell-switched technologies like HSPA/GSM can't achieve. HSPA+ is still based on "old" GSM.

Verizon will start this December and ATT in mid 2011. ATT may rush little quicker and it already has LTE trials in Dallas and Baltimore.
