Verizon Says Their Internet TV Service Coming in 2015 Thursday Sep 11 2014 13:51 EDT For many years Verizon has wanted to offer an Internet TV service outside of the company's traditional FiOS and DSL footprint. While Verizon already offers a semi-underwhelming streaming offering via Red Box, Verizon also paid $500 million for Intel's failed dreams and streaming TV technology. Like Intel (and everybody else), Verizon has struggled to get the broadcast industry to sign off on the kind of licensing deals needed to make a truly successful over the top video play. Today Verizon made it clear they're not giving up on the effort, CEO Lowell McAdam stating that the company still plans to offer an Internet TV effort in mid-2015. What's more, McAdam claims Verizon has made progress in talks: quote: The telco expects by mid-2015 it will offer mobile users a “bundle with major broadcast providers” plus a collection of “custom channels,” he said today at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia conference. “It’s the Big 4 for sure, and I would tell you that the very exciting part of this is some of the digital media out of the West Coast” including DreamWorks Annimation’s AwesomenessTV “that really goes after the millenials. It’s targeted content."..."“There’s no doubt in my mind we can make it a win-win….Over the last six months to a year that dialogue has changed dramatically."
While broadcast licensing usually kills these efforts before they can get off the ground, another problem facing Verizon is that most cable operators don't offer a compelling and inexpensive video option because they're afraid of cannibalizing traditional cable TV revenues. In this case, Verizon will likely focus heavily on promoting the service to their LTE subscribers first and foremost -- in the hopes TV will push data usage (and overage fees) ever higher. |
