Each holiday season we celebrate thanksgiving with the family, followed with standing in lines on black friday, exchange gift at Christmas time and of course expect sticker shock not from credit card bills but from the raised Comcast rates.

The essentials package also offers this, but also includes the all the SD channels w/a box.

| While that was the case in the past, expect to see more and more cable companies encrypting the clear QAM in order to entice people to get a box, and thus perhaps purchase a higher programming tier.
RCN in my area recently decided to remove clear QAM stations and encrypt everything.

1 edit | Nothing good on anyway Its not like there's anything good on TV anyway, nothing but trash 99% of the time with the few good shows being ruined by the constant commercial breaks, personally I now only watch stuff I download or buy on DVD (usually download first then buy the DVD later).

Look at the price increases in Texas after contracts expired. Now that pots is no longer a cash cow they will soak you every chance they get. POTS is still a cash cow. Verizon-CA just got two back-to-back 32% rate hikes, followed by immediate and complete deregulation. There remain millions of captive customers, who have no option to disconnect.

| Re: raising prices the only thing that allows pots to be a cash cow is the fact that many, many folks still insist on keeping a pots line in their homes. if no one wanted a pots line (ie opting for voip or cell), then believe me pots would not be a cash cow. we punted our verizon pots line out the front door 6+ years ago. our strongest contention not to do so was "we've always had a landline"---------our sole regret is that we didn't do it sooner. a fundamental concept that applies soundly to voice communications, tv, & isp is simply 'competition'. when there is no or low competition the consumer always loses. bub | |

| prices Lets face it, all utilities will always raise rates. Verizon, unlike some cable companies wants to continue to be a financially viable business and will have to continue to increase rates and charge for service calls. In the not too distant future you will see some of these companies collapse under the weight of their own debt. | |

| You also raise rates when the pool of capital money dries up in a bad economy and all too..
.. the thing I don't get, seriously, is that HD is now becoming a premium service. It's the SAME programming as what you're already paying for. So, what Verizon and some others do, is make the HD service into a package.
Verizon, I don't understand.. this is part of the build out. It's not like they put money into an existing infrustructure so they need to recoup from it. Their ENTIRE infrustructure has to be recouped..
I'd not expect anything less from a telephone provider that likes to invent fees.

| Re: prices Bright house has what, 15 HD channels AND charges extra to get most of them as all the 600's ( HD channels ) are not in the clear ( nice 15.99 month for the STB HD box )
Once you look into what Bright house charges and what you get you will realize FIOS is cheaper than either cable or even DTV which is 88 bucks after taxes for the full HD tier in Florida

| It`s all about the Bundle As long as the Bundle prices don`t go up, there is no increase for the majority of customers. Most people end up getting the triple play even if they didn`t have a landline previously. This is because it usually only costs a little more to get the unlimited calling Freedom package. By keeping the individual prices of Internet and TV high, it only makes the Bundle more attractive. | |
