Verizon Skype Client Apparently Disables Android Wi-Fi
Verizon working with Google, handset vendors on problem...
by Karl Bode Wednesday 14-Apr-2010 tags: business · wireless · bandwidth
We've already talked about how Verizon's "exclusive" agreement with Skype has created a Skype client that has a number of quirky restrictions -- including the fact that it eats your wireless minutes in some instances, in addition to not working at all over Wi-Fi. But this week Skype Journal's Phil Wolff discovered a problem with the client we hadn't heard of before: apparently users who are using the Skype app over 3G can't turn on Wi-Fi. As in, at all. Users who try to use the Verizon Skype app while their Android-based phone is using Wi-Fi (to download mail, news, whatever) are greeted with the following message:

"Skype mobile does not currently work on WiFi and requires switching to a Verizon Wireless data network connection. This may affect other apps using a WiFi connection."

There's no engineering reason for this, so what's happening? Verizon confirmed the oddity with Connected Planet, and insists that the problem is created because of an Android glitch that forces the user to disconnect from a hotspot in order to initiate Skype Mobile. But Verizon goes to great and seemingly-unrelated lengths to explain how the specially-crafted app actually runs over Verizon's traditional voice network and therefore has to comply with CALEA and wiretap laws:

Although the voice signal for Skype Mobile calls run over Verizon Wireless' voice network, the signaling data required to set up and tear down the call is delivered over 3G and processed via an in-network gateway. It's that data "about the call" that is ultimately needed to meet CALEA obligations. According to Verizon, for both legal and other reasons, that signaling data cannot be sent over an open Wi-Fi connection but only over its more secure 3G data network.

Verizon's apparently been listening to criticism that the carrier is forcing the app to run over their voice network in order to keep the concept of voice minutes relevant in an age where voice is simply data. Regardless, Verizon says they're working with Google and handset vendors to get the glitch fixed.

weird

you'd think they would want it to run over Wifi and get it off thier EVDO network.

Re: weird

Voice has such little traffic, that this is more of a cash cow for them, attempting to make minutes relevant.

I for one would be outraged if this had hit either my WinMo (Sprint Treo) or iPhone 3GS, as I use WiFi for essentially unlimited outbound calls over WiFi.

And how exactly would that occur...

My work/office has WiFi, and I have Skypeout $36/year for unlimited calls over Skype to landlines.

Like I stated 'if'. I haven't used Verizon for years due to past billing issues and C.S. issues.

'If' Skype for WinMo or Skype for iPhone 3GS had killed WiFi access, and forced chewing up of minutes on my Sprint and AT&T devices.

Sometimes you have to spell "it" out for dimwits.

Google Voice will kill Skype if prices don't drop

Skype has always depended on international calling to drive its growth. Google Voice, with its upcoming Gizmo tie-in & lower international calling rates, will start to eat Skype's lunch soon. And all these deals that Skype is making that limit its capabilities will start to kill its rep and growth rates quickly.

Funny

The App broke the OS, and Verizon is now asking Google to fix the issue? They're even dragging the phone vendors into it.

And why would Google help them? They have an interest of their own ... Google voice.

This is the funniest joke I heard so far for the day.

A glitch usually doesn't have a nice error message.

I left Verizon because they try to nickle and dime you for everything.

I'm sad to see something awesome like Skype gutted and turned into a scam.

It does if you do any sort of exception handling. You know, to catch things that are exceptions to the expected behavior?

Lie of omission.

The Verizon PR guy fails to mention that this CALEA stuff only comes into play because VZW has required the program to connect and transmit over the voice network. There is no legel requirement for this, it's entirely a business decision.

If the Skype mobile program ran entirely over WiFi like other mobile programs (Truphone, Gizmo), there'd be no need to comply with PSTN-directed regulations.

Very true. If the CALEA was a legal requirement by the US government then Skype as a PC application would be illegal to use on wireless PCs which it isn't.

This is just a way for them to work to make more money.

Seriously the Skype APP on he Iphone doesn't require 3G. Hell I was in Mexico with my Iphone 3G data disabled and was on Wifi in my office making calls on our Wifi network without any 3G Data requirements..

So verizon can suck on it in this case. Thank god for Fring as it support skype calling with wifi with zero issues from my experience. Its just not the pretty blue client Skype mobile is.

Re: Lie of omission.

I've heard that there's still an old WinMo Skype program that will work over WiFi. It's no longer supported/distributed by Skype but the .cab is still available, I've heard.

But anyway, with Skype making so many a**hole moves recently I'm surprised anyone would still want to use it. There are other VoIP fish in the sea, as it were.

two concurrent connections

My winMo sprint phone will not keep more than one data connection open Its either 3g or wifi. And to be honest, the wifi shuts itself off after 5 minutes.

It's not a bug...

It's a feature!

Seriously, how could they not know this before it's released?

Skype is so crippled, it is ceasing to be relevant. Shows you what happens when you get in bed with Verizon.
