Verizon Speeding Up LTE Deployment Speculation suggests it's to co-launch with Apple tablet Q1 2010 Verizon has already stated they're testing LTE wireless broadband and seeing speeds up to 60Mbps. In 2010, the company says they'll be launching the speedier service in roughly 30 markets alongside devices with swappable SIM cards (can we get an a-men?). A source informs Techcrunch that Verizon is rushing to launch LTE service in a handful of those markets right out of the gate in 2010, potentially to complement the Apple touchpad insiders have been so chatty about: ...our source says that Verizon is putting just about everything it has in to moving many of these markets up to Q1 2010 which is the same time frame for this supposed new Apple device...Our source doubts that Apple would want to sell the device with a subsidy, locking customers into another contract, but believes that Apple could either try to bake the cost of the network into the device (which would work like Amazons Kindle). Of course the tablet would need a dual-mode chipset that would allow users to fall back on Verizon's CDMA/EVDO network when LTE networks aren't around, which for the next few years is going to be pretty much everywhere. Additional leaks inside Apple seem to be bubbling up everywhere, most of the sources confirming the company is definitely looking at a first quarter 2010 launch for the tablet. Via Twitter, Verizon tells us to "hold our breath" for more information, which means they either want us to keel over waiting for a product that never arrives (possible, given our criticism of their open network announcement), or that we won't have long to wait for more detail.

| | | | | | Re: Nice Everyone needs to wait an see. Just like other Internet providers the faster speeds bring bigger caps. The 5GB cap will not be on LTE Service because no one would buy. If you get 60MB you will fly through that cap in a few days. | |

They're will be a cap. and 5gigs seems like what VZW will have.

pules join:2001-01-10 Los Angeles, CA | What are the chances Los Angeles will get LTE in 2010? I've been holding off getting a personal Smartphone (since my company provides me a blackberry with unlimited data) for several years now. I'm SO ready to move to a Smartphone. LTE's supposed speeds alone will get me to dump my 2-3 (if not older) year old flip phone to (hoping) the iPhone or a cool Android based phone. With that said, what are the chances Los Angeles will be part of the initial 30 markets?

said by '»www.unstrung.com/document.asp?doc_id=179562' : Qualcomm Inc. (Nasdaq: QCOM) will be months later than expected in shipping its first Long Term Evolution (LTE) silicon samples for data cards, which could push back products based on the chipsets to later in 2010. ... "We are estimating samples in the third quarter and production chips in the second half of 2010, says Joseph Byrne, analyst at the The Linley Group , of Qualcomm's initial LTE plans. He says this means that production data cards using the silicon will arrive "in the third or fourth quarter" of 2010.
ST-Ericsson is seen as Qualcomm's main rival in the LTE data card silicon business and is expected to produce an LTE-only chip in roughly the same time period.
"My operating assumption is that Verizon will work with ST-Ericsson and Qualcomm for data cards," says Byrne, although he notes that there may be some custom silicon produced in Japan before the late 2010 time-frame.
Data cards that operate on LTE (and 3G) networks won't be available until the later part of 2010 at the earliest. LTE-based embedded devices (handsets or tablets, in this case) will take even longer. 2011 at least, probably 2012. Which is why I and others have said a LTE based iPhone, or any phone for that matter, isn't likely until 2012 or so.
That's just on the VZW side of it, Apple is another story.
Apple, or at least Steve Jobs, doesn't like devices of this type or form factor. He killed off the Newton and said publicly he canceled an Apple PDA in development.
said by '»www.appleinsider.com/articles/04···pda.html' : Speaking from the Wall Street Journal's D: All Things Digital conference this afternoon in Carlsbad, Apple CEO Steve Jobs made a number of interesting statements. Most notably, Jobs confirmed that Apple had designed its own PDA device, but canned the project just prior to bringing it to market. ... Jobs stated that he is proud not only of the products Apple has shipped, but also the products Apple has decided not to ship. When asked to elaborate, Jobs replied, "an Apple PDA."
I think the reason for this is, it's a solution (platform) in search of a problem.
An iPod, and particularly a cell phone, is small enough to fit in your pocket, you'll always carry it with you, it'll have much of your important data, and it will get increasingly powerful over time. Once you get bigger than that size, you lose the ultra mobile aspect of it. And if your going to use a device that's only 'portable' and not mobile, why not just use a notebook? It has a lot more performance after all.
This might explain some of his reasoning on cell phones, iPods, PDAs, and tablets:
said by '»www.macobserver.com/tmo/article/···f_iPods/' : Walt Mossberg: A lot of people think given the success youive had with portable devices, you should be making a tablet or a PDA.
Steve Jobs: There are no plans to make a tablet. It turns out people want keyboards. When Apple first started out, "People couldnit type. We realized: Death would eventually take care of this." "We look at the tablet and we think itis going to fail." Tablets appeal to rich guys with plenty of other PCs and devices already. "And people accuse us of niche markets." I get a lot of pressure to do a PDA. What people really seem to want to do with these is get the data out . We believe cell phones are going to carry this information. We didnit think weid do well in the cell phone business. What weive done instead is weive written what we think is some of the best software in the world to start syncing information between devices. We believe that mode is what cell phones need to get to. We chose to do the iPod instead of a PDA.
I think that explains his logic pretty well. In hindsight, it seems obvious that Steve was gunning for the cell phone market for a long time.
Although it should be noted that there are instances where he has bad mouthed or said things, then had Apple do differently: releasing a cell phone when said they wouldn't (w/o a keyboard no less), bad mouthed video on iPods (then later added support for it), etc.
I think my analysis still holds, but I could be wrong.

This is why I've always wondered why the "excitement" over netbooks ever existed in the first place. You still have to sit down, open it up, boot it up, etc. etc. Why not just carry around a lightweight notebook?

| | | | Re: with verizon LTE... said by dib22:-you can hit your cap in less than a day!!! -pay outrageous overage fees even faster!!! Thats why the Cap will have to be really high.
Even if they get 30 Mbps avg. in the field there is no way they can sell it with a 5GB cap.
They are going to have to have a cap at least 1 times higher per Mbps that they know they can really deliver.
And the bandwidth will be there at the cell site. There is no way they can get away with putting 1 Gbps on each cell site if they are seeing speeds up to 60 Mbps, it will have to be 10 Gig ethernet per cell site.

Just a law of averages. People sitting there downloading constantly for hours on end are not going to be tolerated on the network.
Also your bandwidth varies constantly based on signal so even 100 people on a site would not overwhelm a 1g circuit. -- Play a Death Knight? www.theebonhold.com
| | | | | 1gbps links will be more than enough for the service. In order to get 60mbps, they are going to have to launch a MIMO service with two carriers. I don't think Verizon even bid on enough spectrum in the 700 MHz auction to get anywhere close to those speeds. In addtion, everythin works great in a lab when you don't have to worry about the topology, RF interference, etc. People will be lucky if they get greater than 10mbps with LTE single carrier. | |
|
| | SIM cards I honestly don't see the big deal about them. I've had GSM service from AT&T on my own account with a SIM card and I've never really had to swap the SIM card to another device.
Also I've had problems where the contacts of the SIM got dirty and caused problems.
| | | | Re: SIM cards What are the 30 markets? | |
| | | | | Re: SIM cards My guess the markets that already have multiple options for broadband. It would be nice if they actually launched this in places without anything other than Evdo, Satellite or dial up access. That won't happen and I probably won't see LTE till 2013-2014. | |
| | | | | The 30 markets will most likely be markets in which Verizon has launched Fios. It would be too cost prohibitive to build out someone elses network to launch gigE service. | |
