Verizon tells Telephony Online that they'll be offering a video conferencing service to FiOS customers sometime this year. The video phone system will be part of a flood of new services Verizon is working on to bring added value to speedy connections (and added monthly revenue to Verizon), including home security systems and remote energy management. "We don’t regard video telephony as the silver bullet," says Verizon's Bill Heilig. "It is in a clip of silver bullets in the digital connected home space." Heilig says that going from voice-over-IP to video-over-IP is a "natural progression" for the company. Of course, Verizon is only just starting to truly offer their own VoIP service.
The only problem Verizon had was capital and ability to roll out. Once they get past the curve, expanding services and going towards IP is absolutely a given.
Corporate environments that need video conferencing already have them.
Home users aren't really all that excited about video phones. Kinda makes it awkward to talk on a video phone if you're half (or completely) naked at home.
I think this is a solution in search of a problem.
