Actiontec MI424-WR and Westell UltraLine Series 3 model 9100

Verizon today announced that the telco will be offering two new home gateways for FiOS customers starting in the third quarter of this year. According to the telco, the new broadband routers, built to custom Verizon specifications by Actiontec and Westell, will boost in-home networking speeds over coaxial from 75 Mbps to 175Mbps (using the MOCA 1.1 standard).

Verizon uses MOCA for in-home networking because it's cheaper than running Cat-5 through subscriber homes. The support of this latest MOCA 1.1 standard not only boosts the maximum throughput of the technology to 175Mbps, but it increases the maximum number of devices that can be supported in the household from seven to fifteen.

The devices will allow the creation of multiple (up to four) simultaneous Wi-Fi networks, feature hardware-based QoS, remote Verizon technician management, 64-bit dual core processors and enhanced in-home media sharing functionality. The respective press releases from Actiontec and Westell have slightly more detail. The new gear drops in August.

Re: 802.11n?

I see that the MI424WR is 802.11b/g. Couldn't find anything about the Westell.

The Small Netbuilder review of the MI424WR relates to an older model based on totally different hardware, so beware.

Hmmmmm. how does one get 75 to 175mbps on hardware limited to 54mbps and expect ~20mbps[realworld] out of that.

That's referring to the speed over coax not Wi-Fi.

If you want FIOS but don't want that, could you instead just get a dumb, simple modem and hook it up to your PC (if you only have one) or your (main) router?

Re: Crys :(

Nope. Modems won't do a thing on FiOS. If you want to use FiOS, either an Ethernet or MoCo enabled router.

Re: Crys :(

When I said modem, I meant a "modem" like how a cable or DSL connection has one. They aren't really modems, as there's no analog/digital conversion, but they serve the same sort of purpose.

Are you saying that with FIOS there's no such thing?

Personally, I prefer to have the absolute simplest CPE possible, and just connect the CPE to my Linux router/server. Then I have the rest of my network behind that router.

I will always choose not to get the router from the ISP, since it reduces configuration needed to change to a different connection.

For example, if I wanted DSL instead all I have to do is get the DSL modem, and connect it to the designated WAN port on my router. After that all I'd have to do is switch the IP address on the WAN interface (I always get static IPs) and then I'm good to go.

Re: Crys :(

Ultimately yes, there is no modem for FiOS. It goes Fiber right into your house, which hits an ONT which is like a modem, but not in the terms, and then the ONT either gives your router a connection via Ethernet or MoCa. You cannot take the ONT out of the equation what so ever, and if you want to replace it, you need to shell up a bit of money for one and you need to know how to install it properly, or Verizon will give you something such as a Tellabs or Motorola ONT. So ultimately, no modem, just router.

Also, unlike a modem most of the time, the ONT is a layer 2 device that cannot and does not respond to pings. All it does is convert light to digital data for the router to use. BUT, with FiOS, since the ONT gives your router ether Ethernet or MoCa data, if you are on Ethernet you could use Ethernet right to your PC from the ONT and either use a PPPoE dialer or simply let the PC get an IP since FiOS uses DHCP.

If you are in an MDU though, Verizon uses VDSL to service most people, unless it's new and they run ONTs to everyone and in that case, you can use any modem that does VDSL.

As a former fios rep, I suspect those must be fairly rare or only exist in the Northeast, as neither I nor any of my cow-irkers eever encountered a setup like that.

As a former fios rep, if by some twist of fate Verizon took over my area and offered fios I would order only internet and I'd insist upon a Cat 5 run to my router. Those actiontec M142s are crap. I'd even be willing to pay an extra, one-time fee for such an install. I'd also connect the BBU to a store-bought UPS so that it wouldn't switch off during a power glitch.

Yeah well at least your not getting teased

They ran the Fiber on the poles that service my house over a year ago. Signed the contract with my township for TV back in January and I still don't have it. Although last week I did see a bunch of Verizon Trucks down the street.
Oh PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE Get this turned on.

About time...

THIS is how hardware should be designed and deployed -- Verizon is certainly breaking the mold as far as the old phone company goes, and good for them. I hope they reap the profits and leave their competition with no choice but to follow.

Pretty much guaranteed you didn't get the new version. I just got FiOS installed today, and I got the old one.

Check the pictures (»www.actiontec.com/products/image···BH-1.jpg, »www.actiontec.com/products/image···BH-4.jpg, »www.actiontec.com/products/image···ht-8.jpg). The new one has a USB port on the back, a "USB" light on the front, and a big "WiFi Setup" light (button?) on the front. The old one doesn't have those.

Model # MI424-WR
64-bit, dual core processor, 10-15% performance improvement over the 32-bit standard

hardware-level Quality of Service (QoS) with eight input channels and eight output channels. This innovative design frees the CPU for other bandwidth needs, and ensures that providers can deliver multiple high quality video streams without any dropped frames, frozen frames, or other performance issues that can degrade video and television service and impede IPTV adoption.

Ok the REAL Question is...

Will the firmware be completely overhauled to allow your PC's to actually use the internet the way you want to.

And will the USB port be activated to allow USB hardrives and media sharing etc. etc....

If they truly did it right then the early users will few if any issues and wont have nat tables so small that a single user maxes it out....time will tell but this is a positive improvement..

Why Oh Why...

They promised to start rolling out in our area soon, and are even doing tests at a nearby town. I'd be willing to switch from paying $200+ to TWC to have everything (phone/tv/internet) with Verizon. Those boxes look pretty sweet.

Why not a new model number?

You would think Actiontec would at least come up with a new model number to differentiate it from the old version. I'm liking the feature set of the Westell better.

They might, but with the added CPU power it may make the ActionTec if the NAT table is smaller not choke over things as much. But we shall see!

can ethernet be used at all?

If a FIOS user wishes to just have internet and wants to get the best possible performance out of the network, can they not run Cat5 straight from the ONT to their router/computer if they wish, or is everyone stuck with MOCA? I realize Moca will be used during the initial install, but can this be changed to pure ethernet between the ONT and router/PC if user wishes? Just curious, since that's the way I know I'd want to do it.

Re: can ethernet be used at all?

Not true. Get the ONT authorized for Ethernet first, that way you can use your own router. MoCA can still be used as long as the modem/router is on the network.

I read it as the poster asking if FIOS ethernet can directly be plugged into a computer, with no router in the path.

The only thing you need to host for the XB360 is to forward 2 ports. »support.microsoft.com/kb/908874

In my XB, I manually assign both the gateway and its IP (NOT Automatic), then I forward the ports to the IP, regardless of the router/gateway you have.

It works solid everytime.
